I cant have another speeding ticket on my record. I'm in the market for a decent radar detector. Can someone name some reliable ones and price ranges. Thanks

this, they are just a waste of money. If you want to invest a grand or 2 you can get deflectors built into the front part of your car. Or laser scramblers will do the trickOriginally Posted by neukicks
The radar gun finds you before your radar detector finds the radar, words of the wise, don't speed.

um, the problem with that is they are ILLEGAL...Just don't speed, but in Cali is hard. With thier recent budget cuts, i've had a few friends get pulled over for doing 5-10mph over the speed limit....
A radar detector is nothing more than a device with a sensor on it. When that sensor is triggered by radar bands flying though the air (cops use Ka band and K band to clock you) the detector will make an audible noise. Because a radar is nothing more than a sensor, it does not give off its own detectable waves. There is no way cops can detect its presence unless they see it. Perhaps wanksta23 is referring to the build-in radar deflectors that are outfitted to vehicles. These deflectors will make your car like a bootleg stealth bomber. If a cop shoots you with his radar he will receive an error message. At that point he can ascertain that you are using a radar deflecting device.Originally Posted by wanksta23

i wouldn't spend my $$ on them
not really, it usually just wont show a speed, which could mean a number of things besides a laser jammer. by the time he hits you with the laser gun, your jammer will alert you, allowing you to slow down when youre near the cop. its not designed to allow you to haul #%* driving by the cop and get away scot-free.Originally Posted by jordan for president

Personally, I've owned 2 Escort radars in my lifetime and they have SAVED MY %%#. They may be pricey, but they pay themselves off after 2 speeding tickets. I would recommend the Escort Passport 9500. You may look at the price andbut after the speeding tickets and the time you spend doing defensive driving to keep them off you record the $500 will be well worth it. Main diff between this and the Valentine is that the Valentine has indicator arrows to tell you where the signal is coming from.

That said, you also should incorporate a defensive mentality into your driving. Ie. If you're hauling %%# over the speed limit and you're coming up on a hill where you cannot see the other side, its a good idea to let off the gas and coast uphill. this will return you to normal speed for the cop that may be hiding at the top of that hill with a Laser (point and shoot) radar gun. Thats just an example. Interestingly, though, Escort claims that their tests can account for over-the-hill type speed traps, etc.
just my .02.
P.S. They're illegal in some states, but that shouldnt stop you. Check your laws. There are also devices to conceal the radar so you won't have to quickly toss it under your seat if you get pulled over.
