TRAINING CAMP REPORT: DAY 10 (A.M. PRACTICE)
By Paul Wexler

RaiderBeat.com Staff Writer

NAPA, Calif.

Quarterback JaMarcus Russell looked especially sharp in practice once again.

Time and again, he delivered the ball in a spot where only the receiver had a chance
to make a play on the ball.

Several times, he lofted the ball just over the defender's head and into the waiting
arms of the receiver.

Another time, he fired a laser past cornerback Stanford Routt in tight coverage and
right to rookie receiver Louis Murphy. That's one of the few times any receiver has
been able to beat Routt in camp.

Murphy did an impressive job using his big body to shield Routt from the ball and
his height to snare the ball above his head.

Coach Tom Cable said he wants Russell to be more precise and quick to react when
throwing to the "hot read" on blitzes.

"Well, the hot principle is a part of what we are doing and that is what our real
focus has been on," Cable said. "We want to see those types of pressures but see us
get it out of our hand quicker and get it into the guy that is the hot read."

Quarterback Jeff Garcia and wide receiver Javon Walker are getting close to
returning to practice, Cable said.

"We will see, just day to day, really don't want to press it," Cable said of
Garcia's recovery from a calf strain. "As he is ready to go, he will go."

Walker worked hard off to the side once again and shows no signs of soreness or the
ability to run hard.

We are getting close," Cable said. "Kind of same thing with Jeff (Garcia). We don't
want to put him back out here to fast. Everything is going great with both of them.
Javon's has obviously been a long process, so we just want to be as sure as we can
when we pull the trigger there."

Cable said Garcia will be the No. 2 quarterback in exhibition games once he is able
to play. Oakland's first exhibition game is against the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 13 at
the Oakland Coliseum.

Garcia hasn't practiced since last weekend, though he is able to work on
strengthening his calf with trainers.

Rookie receiver Nick Miller made several nice catches once again. It's getting to
the point where he has a legitimate shot to make the team.

Russell said Miller is the kind of player who has to be on the field and someone he
likes to see in the huddle.

"You can't talk too much about who can make it on those young guys until they get in
an actual NFL game in the preseason," Cable said. "What I like about him so far is,
he's quick, tough, smart, works extremely hard. You can see that. So, he's got the
right ingredients. Let's see what he does with that."

Ricky Brown worked at strong-side linebacker and Kirk Morrison at middle linebacker
with the first-team defense. Jon Alston worked with the second-team this time.

It's all part of Cable's plan to create
as much competition as he can and pick the best three linebackers, regardless how
they played last season.

Cable said Morrison is thriving in the competitive environment.

"He's handling the competition well," Cable said. "He has to. He doesn't have a
choice."

Michael Huff has looked pretty good in camp so far. As a result, he now is part of
the equation when it comes to Cable picking his starting safeties.

"He's in the mix," Cable said. "There's no question. He's a good player. He knows
what he needs to do in terms of becoming a sure tackler. But he's right in the
middle of it."

Cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha (hip) and Chris Johnson (knee), offensive lineman Mark
Wilson (back) and guard Paul McQuistan (knee) did not practice.

Defensive end Derrick Burgess still hasn't reported to camp, and Cable has no
interest in talking about the lingering issue. The Raiders are attempting to trade
Burgess, who is unhappy with his contract status.

Greg Ellis still is working at Burgess' old left defensive end spot, and he is the
projected starter there.

Left offensive tackle Mario Henderson has a firm grip on the starting spot now that
Khalif Barnes is out with a fractured left ankle.

That doesn't mean the pressure is off. Free-agent acquisition Erik Pears is getting
some reps behind Henderson, and Cable is keeping up the pressure on Henderson to
improve despite
not having Barnes breathe down his neck all the time.

The Raiders brought in seven on-field officials to help oversee their practices the
next three days.

Cable said he wants the officials to point out penalties so that he can get a handle
on the penalty issue that has plagued the Raiders in recent seasons.

Morrison said there's a great benefit to having the officials preside over play
during camp.

"It's good," Morrison said. "I think the first week of camp you just want to get
accustomed to getting fundamentally sound, and then when you bring the refs out, the
refs add just the fine-tuning to what you need to go into the preseason with and go
into the regular season.

"For us, we know that the last couple years we've been penalized a lot on both sides
of the ball. So get them out here now and really understand why they're here. Clean
up some of those small areas that can cost a football team five, 10, 15 yards here
and there."

DAVIE - Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry Glenn, who played under Bill Parcells for two different teams and was infamously referred to as "she" by the Miami Dolphins VP, is now working as an intern coach with the Dolphins.

Since training camp began, Glenn has assisted wide receivers coach Karl Dorrell.

Glenn caught 593 passes for 8,823 yards in his 12-year career. He played for Parcells with the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys.

Plenty of Parcells' former players have recently broken into coaching -- former New York Jets linebacker Bryan Cox, who started his career as a Dolphin, played for Parcells and now coaches the Cleveland Browns' defensive line. Another former Jet during the Parcells days, wide receiver Dedric Ward, is starting his first year as receivers coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Parcells and Glenn's famous "she" incident occured in 1996, when Parcells was asked about Glenn's injury status and Parcells replied "She's doing fine". Any wounds have obviously healed, as the two reunited in Dallas even before Glenn's newest gig as intern.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)-The New England Patriots obtained defensive end Derrick Burgess(notes) on Thursday after the two-time Pro Bowl player held out of the Oakland Raiders training camp in hopes of being traded.

The Patriots gave up undisclosed draft considerations for Burgess, who is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he had 3 1/2 sacks in 10 games. New England released offensive lineman Al Johnson(notes).

The trade was announced on the ninth day of Burgess' holdout from the team he recorded 38 1/2 sacks with in four seasons, including a club-record and league-best 16 in 2005. He had 11 the next year and made the Pro Bowl both times.

His total dropped to eight in 2007, but he missed two games.

"He chose not to be here for whatever reasons and now the deal is done and we move forward, as does he," Raiders coach Tom Cable said. "We just moved on without him and it is what it is."

In three seasons with Philadelphia and four with Oakland, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound Burgess had 47 sacks in 85 games. He also missed the 2003 season with a torn Achilles' tendon.

The Patriots were 11-5 last season but had 31 sacks, tied for 14th. The Raiders were 5-11 with 32 sacks.

Burgess is entering the final year of his contract with a $2 million salary and felt underpaid for most of his time with the Raiders. He joined them when he signed a five-year, $18 million contract as a free agent before the 2005 season.

New England and Oakland held discussions around the time of the draft in late April. Then Burgess stayed away from all the Raiders optional offseason workouts and did not go onto the field during May's mandatory minicamp because of a reported upset stomach.

"He'll be just fine in New England's system," Oakland defensive end Jay Richardson(notes) said. "I'm sure he'll probably love it out there, coming off the edge like he does. It's funny because it was actually kind of quiet (here), no one really knew. A lot of guys thought sooner or later he'll walk in those doors and we'll keep rolling."

The Eagles drafted Burgess in 2001 with the first pick of the third round out of Mississippi.

The Patriots signed Johnson in March after he spent four seasons with Dallas, which drafted him in the second round in 2003 out of Wisconsin. He played for Arizona in 2007 and was on the Cardinals injured reserve list in 2008 before they released him. He then signed with Miami where he played four games.

are u kidding me? the pats are going to be

someone explain this for me... i think Gunna did once but i FORGOT.

Pat White is listed as a QB on the Phins rosters right?
You are only allowed to have 2 active qbs right?
Isn't Chad Henne the backup to Pennington?
How is Pat White going to be eligible to play?

I thought White was listed as a WR?

And in terms of the wildcat, listing him as a WR is perfect anyways, as we can bring him in and out and use him instead of Ronnie Brown in the shotgun. Thatway, Henne is still available should Pennington get hurt and we also keep White active as well.

If he's listed as a QB, the scratch all that @#$% I just said.

Pat will be listed as the 2nd QB so he can be active and cause havoc on the field and make DCs go crazy during the week leading upto the game.Henne will be listed as 3rd/emergency inactive QB. If Penny gets hurt, so will Pat
wink.gif
(fake injury). That's when under league rules, Henne can come in the game to play QB

Glenn is that dude...Never forget his rookie season, and for that I'll always consider him better than he was...Or should I say, could have been?

SAN ANTONIO -- Dallas Cowboys cornerback Michael Jenkins hurt his right ankle in practice Saturday morning, possibly putting a crimp in the main position battle of training camp.

Jenkins was covering a receiver in a full-squad drill when someone stepped on the inside of his foot. Jenkins twisted his leg while the foot was pinned, which may have left him with a high ankle sprain, an injury that tends to linger.

"I'm worried about it," team owner Jerry Jones said. "We've had a preliminary look at it, but there's some more that we need to see on how he responds."

Jenkins was taken by cart to the locker room for an MRI scan on the inside of his foot and ankle. Jenkins was able to put some weight on it after the exam, which Jones hopes is a sign that it's not a severe injury.

However, Jones added, "Those high ankle things have a way of sometimes not initially having the sensitivity as they have after you sleep on it."

Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick are competing for the only starting job up for grabs. Both have played well the first 1½ weeks of camp, so any missed time could put Jenkins behind.

Secondary coach Dave Campo said the competition is too close to call right now.

"I think they're both doing very well," he said. "We'll see how we do once we get into the games."

Jenkins and Scandrick are both in their second season after playing well as rookies.

Jenkins, a first-round pick, started three times and played in 14. Scandrick, a fifth-rounder, started three times and played in all 16. Regardless of who wins the starting job, the Cowboys are planning to use both on third downs.

Terence Newman, the other starter at cornerback, didn't practice Saturday morning but isn't hurt. It was just time off for a veteran.

"We're just giving some guys some days off just to recuperate their legs," Campo said

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson has hyperextended his right knee in practice.

Jackson fell awkwardly Saturday after getting tangled up with cornerback Asante Samuel during a full-squad drill.

The second-year pro walked the length of the field with head trainer Rick Burkholder before being carted to the locker room. Jackson was able to put weight on his leg after practice, but the knee was heavily wrapped.

A second-round draft pick in 2008, Jackson set the Eagles' single-season rookie record with 912 receiving yards. He also set the team's single-season rookie record for a wide receiver with 62 receptions

Pat White will be 2nd QB soon enough. Mike Tomlin was so high on him, but just no need for Pitt to draft him. I think he will be pretty effective in time.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Philadelphia Eagles rookie tight end Cornelius Ingram has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and is likely out for the season.

The team said an MRI scan taken Saturday revealed the injury he sustained on Tuesday.

The fifth-round pick missed his senior season at Florida after tearing the ACL in the same knee almost exactly a year ago.

The Eagles are now thin at tight end, with only veteran Matt Schobel and undrafted rookie Eugene Bright behind starter Brent Celek.

Also, receiver DeSean Jackson suffered a hyperextended knee during Saturday's practice. Coach Andy Reid said the injury was not serious.
