It's not about making more money off of a few desired models in the short term. It's about using those models to lift up the perception of the entire brand and make more money across years/decades.
You think all the recent OG AJ 1 cws have been able to “lift up perception of the brand”?

For a company that builds their reputation off of limited products, they sure do release a lot of trash cws in those same products.

They asses and re-evaluate what's working and what isn't. Remember the last time this happened and retros were sitting in 2017/18? They came back strong with new collab partners (Union, Travis Scott., etc.)

It's a simple formula. 1. Limit supply and build up hype. 2. Slowly increase supply and push it until the hype has run its' course. Repeat step 1.

Never forget that Nike has full control of supply. As long as the demand side is fulfilled by consumers still wanting certain silhouettes they can manipulate everything else to how they see fit.

Yet we STILL haven’t had a Chicago retro since 2015 and we’re getting some ”close enough but not the real deal” version this year.

Hell, look at the “85 Jordan 1s” they tout-it’s embarrassing that some dude making reps has done a better job with his version than they did themselves.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Nike is concerned about Gen Z moving toward New Balance-between the mix of tons of price increases on so many trash cws/the
cws people want being close to impossible on the SNKRS AND the internal reselling at Nike itself is a huge turnoff, especially to younger customers who don’t necessarily want to always pay resell for the cws they want due to a broken/unfair system (before anyone says anything, Adidas is just as bad if not worse for the garbage/design theft they pulled with YE and Yeezy (brand) and Adidas’ awful Confirmed app).

Nike only does things when they are forced to do them, so IMO they still feel like they can dangle the carrot without ever really giving it to us. I'm sure they are keeping tabs on other brands, but this is the reason they have kept the 1:1 ace up their sleeve. They will only ever pull it out if they ever feel like they are in real trouble.

I also feel like people think if 1:1 retros are brought back that will be the norm. I could easily see Nike do a "1985 OG Recreation Limited" campaign. They release those, get the hype back and put them away for decades.
