OFFICIAL TRAVEL GUIDE: JAPAN

Will be booking a trip soon to Tokyo so I will be in this thread frequently with questions and suggestions. Good stuff.

3. Trashcans are almost nonexistent. And when you find one, there are like 4 different containers to put your trash in depending on the type of trash.
so much this. there will be a row of trash bins outside of every convenience store but other than that, i just ended up bagging my rubbish and carrying it in my backpack.

19. 72 year old Japanese guys can climb up mountains way faster than you can.
i was at mt takao to eat a nice dinner and there was a super steep path coming off the mountain covered with snow and these really old people (looked to be around 80) came down the trail. at the station to clean your boots off, there were also a bunch of really old hikers. it was amazing. then again, i don't think they have ADA regulations to ensure that stairways in the subway are graded at reasonable angles and such. you see old people walking up some long, steep stairs.

20. Japanese people care about their jobs more than you do. Although they have PTO, you are looked down upon if you use it as somebody who doesn’t care about their job..so nobody uses it. Only if you are pretty much dying…but then they use their sick leave instead so they won’t get paid for it. Wouldn’t want to burden a multimillion dollar company with you dying and what not.
100% true. their work ethic and dedication to the job is crazy. i went to an office building at 8pm and it was packed with people still working. no overtime pay. work until the job is done.

another one that can be confusing to first-time visitors is that many restaurants have a system where you go in, select your meal and pay at a vending machine, get a ticket and then present the ticket at the counter and wait for them to serve your meal.

I will be there 5/13-5/22. I would have definitely met up with you.

Anyone else thats going to be out there during that time let me know!
i'm planning on booking my trip from the 15-20. Where will you be staying?
I am staying here...

I carried around trash for half a day the first time I went.

Japans recyling game is on point tho, everything got its own bin.

Anything under a grand is a good deal but it also depends on when you want to travel. Prices range from 650 -$1400 depending the time of the year.

I will be updating with more photos soon. Sorry for the delay. New house got me working around the clock!

flying to tokyo on Friday. question...what's the best way to obtain yen? i'm with chase and they have 3% foreign atm withdrawal fee.. wondering if there's any other alternatives

My girl set up a CRAZY itinerary for our trip

We are going to some festival, Tokyo Giants baseball game, Sumo tournament, Hot Springs, Robot show, Tokyo Tower, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I am trying to stay calm, but I am excited for May 13th!!!

You're gonna love it! Make sure you hit up the ramen, udon, tsukamen, sushi, gyoza spots! Food in Japan is amazing and they take a lot pride in what they do!

Gonna update some more photos today.

I just came back 2 weeks ago from Japan.

If you get the chance, get out to Kyoto and Osaka. They're only approx. 30-45 min train ride apart and both have lots of culture to offer. As for Tokyo, I also saw a Giants baseball game. The atmosphere was real exciting. The Tokyo Sky Tree I think is just like the Tokyo Tower, just a bit north of the city. In any case, make sure to go on a clear day - you may get to see Mt Fuji!

I want to visit Japan in a couple weeks but have nothing booked or planned. Anybody know of good sites to look for last minute deals?

All the crazy Kit Kat flavours...I picked up wasabi, green tea, Hokkaido red bean, strawberry cheesecake and raspberry while there.
