Carrie (1976) - 6/8

Imo this succeeds more as a "sad" movie than a horror. It's interesting seeing culture of a certain time depicted in film (casual domestic violence  ) and the opening is pretty weird in itself. But I admit it was pretty funny seeing the gym teacher yoke students up

Side note: Although there are more pros than cons, I think one of the downsides of the large amount of films available on numerous platforms today, is the lack of shared experiences for moviegoers. I've spoken to a few older folks who mention how memorable the end jump scare was (I actually forgot about it by the time it happened  ). Idk if we have stuff like that for this generation.

Clerks is very appreciated. Great dialog and I still put it on every now and then.

Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back were all good movies but things kind of took a downturn after the latter for Smith IMO. Clerks II wasn't terrible though and did have a few laughs. Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (it's a reboot of Strike Back within a reboot lol) was pretty disappointing but does provide some nostalgia at times.

Any appreciation for Clerks in here? Kevin Smith had solid little run after this. Nothing as good, imo. This is just special film.

LOVE Clerks. Dogma is probably my favorite Smith film. I really enjoy his commentary on nerdy ****/think he's a legit funny person and he seems like a super good dude. Have a couple of his books and they are fun light reads.
Clerks 2 was probably his last really good one to me, still need to see Reboot.

As much as I liked Clerks 2 I couldn't really love it b/c the made it Hollywood. The simplicity of the 1st film made it extremely relatable. The scenery (or lack of) forced the dialogue to the forefront. Literally sounded like regular conversations.

I do think 1 is significantly better. Agree everything felt extremely natural.
Smith said everyone would tell him how going black and white was such a great artistic move and he only did it because he was broke and it was cheaper to shoot. Took a loan out and took the chance to make Clerks and the rest is history

I heard this too. Also heard him say some ppl telling him his choice to go black and white to mimic security camera footage was genius  Said he was just broke. I think it was on some podcast or documentary.

Dogma will remain Kevin Smith's magnum opts until he gets the balls to direct a string of superhero movies like he should've a decade ago.

I think he's a bit overrated at times or tends to involve himself at times when he shouldn't but it did bug me that Jon Favreau managed to make Iron Man and Kevin Smith has nothing to his name when it comes to nerd fandom pop culture.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno had its moments.
I liked this post before not realizing Smith directed this. Had no idea.

At the time I just naturally assumed it was Seth who did it or his friend that directed his past movies or Judd Apatow.

Peeped Enola Holmes tonight. Lost my interest at times, but overall thought it was good. Eleven was solid as the lead and the supporting acting performances were good. 5.85/8.

Firestarter (1984) - 5.5/8

Good concept but not executed that well. A mediocre adaptation that banks on Drew Barrymore's "cute factor" to sell the movie. All things considered, she did a good job, but the film wasn't good enough overall for her to carry it, especially since she was essentially a baby.

This also made me think of the fine line between "rip-off" and paying homage. Basically, if a film or movie is bad, it's a rip-off, but if it's good, it's a "love letter". I say this as a big Stranger Things fan; I was aware of most of the references (the S2 Will/Joyce arc is essentially the Exorcist, for example). But I didn't know how much they directly took from this movie - the nosebleeds, bad Government men, using the child as a weapon, etc.

Didn't he want to do Daredevil or something? They should give him a shot but it probably will end up like Edgar Wright's Antman... Wait with the Multiverse coming into play, could Edgar Wright get to do his movie that has no connections to the MCU?
