Wakee Salud cries foul
The Philippine Star 11/12/2006

Philippine superfeatherweight champion Jimrex Jaca is fighting Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) interim featherweight crown at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, on Nov. 25 but his manager Rex (Wakee) Salud is desperately trying to stop it.

Salud is crying foul over what he insists was an act of treason by Jaca for agreeing to fight Marquez without his approval.

Since turning pro on his 17th birthday in 2000, Jaca has never fought without Salud in his corner. His real name is Jimuel Divino. It was Salud who renamed him Jimrex Jaca to fuse his first name (Jim) and his own (Rex) and to recognize trainer Anol Jaca.

Salud provided Jaca with all the breaks in his career, the biggest of which was fighting in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales rematch in Las Vegas last January.

WBO Asia-Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo, a Hawaiian of Filipino descent, booked Jaca for the fight, originally set last Oct. 21, through Bukidnon boxing agent Leonel Lazarito.

But the fight didnt push through because Jaca was able to get his US visa only three days before the match. Salud decided it was useless to proceed because of the limited lead time. Besides, the report was Jaca weighed 138 pounds or 12 over the featherweight limit.

Salud said he got word from Golden Boy Promotions that the fight was cancelled, not postponed.

Looking to keep Jaca active, Salud went ahead to negotiate a Philippine title defense against Baby Lorona in Dumaguete on Nov. 25. Jacas period of defense was due to lapse so Salud explored the option.

But an opportunity opened for Jaca to see action in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Morales rubber match on Nov. 18 at a weight limit of 131 pounds. Salud, banking on his relations with Top Rank Promotions, managed to squeeze out a spot in the show from Bob Arum.

The bout was an eight-round tune-up with a purse of $7,500. No doubt, it was a substantial downgrade from the $50,000 purse that Jaca was ticketed to earn for fighting Marquez but at least, he wouldnt come up empty-handed.

Salud cleared the deal with Pacquiao and they agreed it might be too early to rush Jaca into a fight against Marquez.

Then came word from Golden Boy that the Jaca-Marquez fight was back in schedule. The fight was reset to Nov. 25.

Salud, however, couldnt back out from his commitment to Top Rank.

"Biglang sinabi ng Golden Boy, tuloy ulit ang laban," said Salud. "But after nakiusap ako kay Arum na pagbigyan si Jimrex, nakakahiya naman mag-pull out. Definitely, magagalit si Arum sa atin. Para tayong urong-sulong at walang isang salita."

Thinking the Top Rank date was a done deal, Salud made arrangements to fly to Croatia on Oct. 26 to attend the World Boxing Council convention. Unfortunately, he missed the Lufthansa early evening flight because his passport, which was entrusted to a Games and Amusements Board (GAB) official, arrived late at the airport. Salud later decided to take a vacation to Tokyo instead. He left last Oct. 28 and returned home three days later.

Back in Cebu, Salud tried to contact Jaca on his cellphone but the line was not in service. He bought plane tickets for Jaca and trainer Robert (Jun) Bubuli for a Nov. 3 departure to the US and wanted to make sure they were on track to leave.

Finally, Salud got through to Jacas wife Brenda Lynn on Nov. 3 only to be told the fighter and Bubuli had left the day before. Who facilitated their departure from the Philippine end for Golden Boy is a subject of speculation but Salud isnt losing sleep over it.

"Whoever helped them probably did it just to help but they shouldve informed me of what they were doing if they were doing nothing wrong," said Salud. "Why was it hidden from me?"

Salud is now appealing to the GAB to take action against Jaca, claiming the fighter trampled on his rights as manager to accept a fight offer without his clearance. Hes trying to stop the bout from taking place and if it pushes through, he wants the Texas commission to withhold Jacas purse.

A few days ago, it appeared Saluds case suffered a big blow when a letter, with his signature, surfaced to confirm his knowledge and tacit approval of the Marquez fight. The letter was addressed to GAB chairman Eric Buhain and signed last Oct. 30. Curiously, the letter noted that Jaca would fight Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas a mistake considering the venue is in Texas.

Salud said he never signed the letter. One other thing, he was in Tokyo when he supposedly signed the letter. He said his secretary Cynthia Unde, acting in good faith, signed the letter in his name, not realizing it would be in conflict with a prior agreement with Arum.

"I dont know how they can do this to me," moaned Salud, referring to Jaca and Bubuli. "I was told when they come back, they wont be welcome by the guys in my gym anymore for what they did to me behind my back."

Salud said the lure of big money baited Jaca into accepting the Golden Boy offer which reportedly is a three-fight contract. Jacas contract to be managed by Salud expires in 2009.

"I realize fighting Marquez for a bigger purse is a much better proposition than fighting in an eight-rounder for a lesser purse but there are agreements that must be respected," said Salud. "We just cant forget about commitments, principles and word of honor for money."

Salud said his rights as manager were violated and thats why hes seeking redress from the GAB.

"Im not taking action just for myself," said Salud. "Im doing this to protect other managers who sacrifice a lot for their fighters only to be left out in the cold in the end."

Jr lightweight Hector Velazquez (46-11-2, 32 KOs) won by eleventh round disqualification over Bobby Pacquiao (27-12-3, 12 KOs) on Thursday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Pacquiao dropped Velazquez in round three with an uppercut, but Valezquez came back to rock Pacquiao and Pacquiao was then deducted a point for a low blow at the end of the round. Pacquiao was again penalized a point for a low blow in round five and received a warning from Bayless in round ten before being DQ'd after straying low again in the eleventh. Pacquiao was leading on two cards entering the eleventh. Velazquez is now 1-1 versus the Pacquiao family, having lost via TKO to Manny last year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Earlier, welterweight Jose Luis Cruz (34-2-2, 28 KOs) pounded out an entertaining and very hard-fought unanimous decision over late sub Archak "Shark Attack" Ter-Meliksetian (16-5, 13 KOs). Cruz was aggressive throughout, but Ter-Meliksetian, who took the fight on just a few days' notice, came on strong as the bout progressed and gave Cruz all he could handle. Scores were 78-74, 78-74, 77-75.

Lady pugs win bronze in world tiff

The Philippine Star 11/26/2006

Light-flyweight Alice Kate Aparri and lightweight Mitchel Martinez settled for the bronze medals as they lost their respective semifinal bouts in the Fourth World Women Boxing Championships at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, India.

Martinez tried but failed to pin down the foxy Argentinian Anabelle Farias, 13-18, to equal her showing in the 2005 World Championships in Russia.

Aparri also won a bronze in her first attempt at the prestigious event after bowing to another Argentinian Yessica Bopp, 9-16.

Host India emerged as overall champion after garnering 34 points anchored on four golds, one silver and three bronzes, followed by Russia with 28 points (3-0-2 gold-silver-bronze).

Korean Yum Kum Ju was declared best boxer.

"The Argentinians proved too slippery for our boxers. Alice and Mitchel stepped up the attack in the later rounds, but the Argentinians managed to dance away from trouble," said head coach Glicerio Catolico in an overseas call to Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Manny Lopez.

The bronze-medal showings delighted Lopez, who stressed that Filipina boxers gave their best.

"Despite losing in the semis, Aparri and Martinez carried the flag proudly. Im proud of them," said Lopez.

The week-long Philippine campaign was supported by Pacific Heights, sportsman-businessman Anson Tin Co of Shape-UP Boxing Gym and the Philippine Sports Commission.

Aparri and Martinez both won the gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games last year.

WBC pushes for Barrera-Pacman II
The Philippine Star 12/13/2006

The World Boxing Council has ordered the camps of Marco Antonio Barrera and Manny Pacquiao to start negotiations regarding the Mexicans mandated defense of his WBC super-featherweight crown against the Filipino superstar.

The WBC said the handlers of the two fighters should act as soon as possible. If no agreement is reached, the boxing council will be forced to conduct a purse bid in Mexico City on Jan. 12 next year.

If this happens, any other promoter outside than those of the two fighters can bid to stage the fight sometime next year. It will be the second between Barrera and Pacquiao.

Barrera is being promoted by Oscar dela Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, which is now locked up in a bitter dispute with Bob Arums Top Rank Promotions on the rights for Pacquiao.

Golden Boy and Top Rank both have "contractual claims" over Pacquiao and might have to settle the issue in the court, hopefully in the coming weeks or ahead of the Jan. 12 deadline imposed by the WBC.

Pacquiao signed a seven-fight contract with Golden Boy last Sept. 19 in Los Angeles. But shortly after Pacquiao defeated Erik Morales last Nov. 19 in Las Vegas, Top Rank announced that it has signed the Filipino to a four-year pact.

Arum promoted the Pacquiao-Morales III and said that under the contract for their third fight, the Filipino southpaw cannot sign up with any other promoter until after the Nov. 19 bout.

This, Arum said, made Pacquiaos contract with Golden Boy illegal.

Arum stunned the media during the Pacquiao-Morales post-fight conference when he said that Pacquiao has renounced his contract with Golden Boy, and has opted to stick it out with Top Rank for the next four years.

Pacquiao even returned the $500,000 bonus he received from Golden Boy. But Golden Boy reportedly shipped the money back to Pacquiao.

Weeks before the Grand Finale, the WBC ordered Barrera to face the winner between Pacquiao and Morales.

The reigning super-featherweight champion said he wanted to face Pacquiao as soon as possible, and has in fact targeted March 11 as the date for his rematch with Pacquiao, who knocked the Mexican out in 11 rounds almost three years ago.

Three other fighters Edwin Valero, Joan Guzman or Juan Manuel Marquez are being lined up as Pacquiaos next opponent. But they may have to wait a while should Pacquiao and Barrera, and their promoters, come to terms.

Team RP Gets Gold In Boxing

DOHA Boxer Violito Payla delivered the second gold 16 hours after Antonio Gabica scored the breakthrough win in the all-Filipino 9-ball final as Team Philippines finally found its bearing heading into the last two days of the 15th Asian Games here.

The feisty Payla dethroned an aging Songjit Jongjohor of Thailand with an impressive 31-15 decision as he mastered his old tormentor with spunk and ring savvy to claim the flyweight crown and fuel the countrys golden run so late in the Games.

Payla controlled the action from the second round on, sneaking in left straights and right hooks to punish Jongjohor, the former world champion, and the fired-up Filipino slugger pressed his attack in the third, catching the Thai again with a powerful left that sent him down on his knee.

The 27-year-old Payla took a 17-11 lead and, from there, worked the time by dancing away from the embattled Thai to nail the gold that touched off a wild celebration among Filipino fans at ringside.

We are right on track of our goal and we will get the second gold after Paylas inspiring win," said boxing president Manny Lopez, referring to Joan Tipons bid against Korean Han Soon Chul for the bantam gold Wednesday.

Counting the two bronzes tucked by Cecil Mamiit in tennis that ended the Philippines 40-year medal drought in the sport, and karateka Noel Espinosa in the mens individual kata, the Philippines now has a 2-4-8 (gold-silver-bronze) medal take to jump to No. 18 in the tally, one rung better than its finish in the Busan Asian Games in 2002.

It could get better with a Tipon victory.

"Tipon has the edge and after Paylas inspiring victory, Tipon will follow suit," said Lopez. "We will now set our eyes for the Beijing Olympics."

Payla trained his sight only for Jongjohor.

"I really prepared for the gold medal and I never went out (of training). I know I have improved as he has beaten me three times," said Payla, who ended a 12-year gold medal drought by RP in boxing.

With one gold, a sure silver (Tipon), and two bronzes, boxing has indeed improved from its Busan stint with only a silver to show courtesy of lightfly Harry Taamor although it paled in comparison with the three-gold haul by Mansueto Velasco, Elias Recaido Jr. and Reynaldo Galido in the 1994 Hiroshima Games.

Jongjohor, back-to-back gold medal winner in the 51kg division in the Vietnam SEA Games and the Manila SEAG, refused to be gracious in defeat, blaming the judges for the lopsided score in the fight that started out a tight contest.

"I didnt prepare enough. But the game turned around because of the judges. I think they pressed their button according to the people around the ring," rued Jongjohor, also the world champion in 2003.

But what slowed down the Thai veteran was when he was hit by Payla in the elbow in the second round where the Filipino took charge and turned the game around.

"I got punched in my left elbow so my arm was stiff and I couldnt punch with it. But I had to push," said Jongjohor.

Payla pushed him harder as the Filipino fighter stepped up his charge in the third to post double-digit leads.

"I am now looking to getting the gold in the Olympics for the Philippines. I want to dedicate this honor to the Filipinos who watched my bouts," Payla said.

Tipon adds third gold to RP haul
The Philippine Star 12/14/2006

DOHA Joan Tipon made it a two-gold haul for boxing and three overall for the Philippines which pressed its bid for a top 15 finish in the Asian Games with two more wushu bets in the hunt for gold medals in Day 13 here.

Tipon, who nipped Athens Olympics silver medalist Worapoj Petchkoom of Thailand Monday, firmed up his claim as the top bantam in the region by demolishing Han Soon Chun of Korea, 21-10, to earn the gold in the 54kg class.

"The fight against Petchkoom was harder than this," said Tipon, fast emerging as the man to watch in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. "I came in relaxed for this match because I have watched Hans previous fights more than five times. I studied his techniques and worked hard on training."

Tipon later said he will next focus on winning the gold in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

"I dont want to move to the pros. I have set my sights on getting a gold in the 2008 Olympics," said Tipon, who stands to receive incentives worth P1.5 million.

"With that money, I will buy a house and use the rest of the money in business," Tipon said.

Ranged against a taller rival, Tipon was all business Wednesday although he fought at a distance in the early going as Han tried to reach in with his 1-2 combination.

But the Filipino fighter scored the first two points to the body then proved to be an elusive target, landing counterpunches as Han left himself open in every charge.

Tipon, who won the Asian Championships in Vietnam last year and the Tampere Cup boxing tournament in Finland early in the season, took the first round at 6-2 and controlled the fight from there as the Korean failed to pin down the scrappy Filipino on the ropes, frustrating him no end.

At times they would clash at center or in the corner and the Korean would score but Tipon proved as slippery as eel, fleeing from Hans clutches with his quick moves and dancing the time away.

Tipon, 24, made the sign of the cross at the buzzer, knelt in front of his countrymen at the Aspire Hall 5 then waved a Philippine flaglet . He went back to the center for the traditional hand-raising ceremony to the cheers of hundreds of Filipino supporters, from officials to volunteers and OFWs.

Pinoy bids for world crown
The Philippine Star 12/21/2006

Itll be a dream come true for Benjie Sorolla of Bacolod City if he dethrones International Boxing Federation (IBF) minimumweight champion Muhammad Rachman in their 12-round title fight at the Indoor Tennis Senayan Stadium in Jakarta this Saturday.

Sorolla, 25, is dedicating the biggest bout of his eight-year pro career to his father Anano, a former amateur fighter who introduced him to the sport as a boy and died in 1993 of complications stemming from an infected tooth. His fondest wish is to win the world title for his late father.

If Sorolla beats Rachman, hell join World Boxing Foundation (WBF) welterweight champion Dondon Sultan as the only reigning Filipino world titleholders today. Superfeatherweight Manny Pacquiao is considered the worlds best pound-for-pound fighter but holds no belt at the moment.

Rachman, 33, won the IBF 105-pound title on a split decision over Daniel Reyes two years ago and is making his third defense after drawing with Fahlan Sakkreerin of Thailand and stopping Omar Soto. His record is 60-5-5, with 30 KOs, compared to Sorollas mark of 24-12-3, with 8 KOs. He hasnt lost in his last 40 outings dating back to 1998.

No Filipino has ever beaten Rachman whose victims include Noel Tunacao, Jun Arlos, Steve Dimaisip, Ernesto Rubillar, Bert Batawang, Jerry Pahayahay, Lito Dangud and Sorolla himself.

Sorolla lost to Rachman on points in his first overseas outing in 2002. He waited four years for a rematch.

"I was very raw," said Sorolla in Filipino. "Rachman was already a veteran of 59 fights when we fought. It was my first trip abroad. I was nervous. I remember his left hook was strong but he never hurt me. I can take his punch. Ive improved since then. I know what to do to beat him."

Sorolla said hes going all out to win.

"My inspiration is Manny Pacquiao," said Sorolla who was only 11 when Rachman turned pro. "I saw what he did to (Erik) Morales in their last fight. Thats what I hope to do to Rachman. I did shadow boxing with five-pound weights in my hands to increase my power and I worked extra hours on the heavy bag. Im ready for him."

Sorolla left for Jakarta with manager Marty Elorde and trainer Sonny Sangalang last Monday.

"This is the biggest break in Benjies career," said Elorde. "I call him a reformed bad boy. Last year, he was jailed 10 days for starting a fight in my restaurant, resisting arrest and biting a policeman. That experience woke him up. He gave up drinking and late nights and concentrated on boxing."

Sorolla admitted to being intoxicated and involved in the brawl but denied biting a policeman.

The youngest of 13 children, Sorolla finished up to second year of high school in Bacolod. A brother Francisco was an amateur fighter but never turned pro. Four brothers and three sisters went to college. His mother Elsa, 63, lives in Cavite with a daughter. If he becomes a world champion and starts earning big bucks, Sorolla said hed like to take care of his family.

Sorolla fought as an amateur in barangay fiestas before his brother Willie, who owns a radiator shop in Sucat, brought him to Elorde in 1996. He got off to a 7-0 start as a pro and has since held the World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific and Intercontinental titles and the WBF International crown.

Elorde said Sorolla is the star in his stable of 17 fighters, including Philippine superbantamweight champion Alex Escaner and prospects Ryan Bito and John Ray Canete.

"Benjie has gone straight," said Elorde. "Hes different now. Hes taking his career more seriously. Hes lucky to get a second chance. He doesnt want to let this opportunity go down the drain."

Sangalangs late father Toti produced several Filipino world champions like Luisito Espinosa, Morris East and Erbito Salavarria. Sangalang hopes to be known as a maker of world champions, like his father, and Sorolla could be the first in his list.

Pacman accepts Barrera challenge

The Philippine Star 12/23/2006

Manny Pacquiao has agreed to fight Marco Antonio Barrera next year, preferably in April, to give the Mexican the chance to avenge his loss to the Filipino boxing icon three years ago.

"The World Boxing Council sent me a letter and said it will be a mandatory fight for Barrera," said Pacquiao in Filipino in an interview with TV Patrol. "I am ready to fight the guy and give him the chance to even things up ."

Pacquiao broke into world boxing stage when he demolished Barrera in a sensational 11-round knockout victory at the Alamodome in Texas three years ago.

But Barrera rose from that defeat to beat Erik Morales in their trilogy. He is the current holder of the WBC super featherweight crown.

Pacquiao also dominated Morales, beating the three-time former world champion twice this year but has no title to boast of.

The WBC has recently ordered the camps of Barrera and Pacquiao to start negotiations regarding the Mexicans mandated defense of his WBC super-featherweight crown against the Filipino superstar.

The WBC said the handlers of the two fighters should act as soon as possible. If no agreement is reached, the boxing council will be forced to conduct a purse bid in Mexico City on Jan. 12 next year.

"I would prefer to fight him in April," said Pacquiao.

The 28-year-old Gen. Santos native, meanwhile, is hopeful that his problem with the Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank would end soon so as to pave the way for his preparation for the Barrera rematch.

Golden Boy and Top Rank both have "contractual claims" over Pacquiao.

Pacquiao challenges Marquez
By Dante Navarro
The Philippine Star 03/25/2007

Manny Pacquiao, raring to re-stake his claim as the worlds best fighter in the 130-lb division, on Friday confirmed his acceptance as mandatory challenger to newly crowned WBC (World Boxing Council) super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez.

Rex "Wakee" Salud, Pacquiaos long-time confidant, said Pacquiao had authorized him to accept the designation as mandatory challenger in response to WBC president Jose Sulaimans letter asking the Filipino boxing icon "to confirm in writing his eligibility and acceptance or denial for the mandatory contender position."

Marquez, who rose from three knockdowns in the first round to force a draw with Pacquiao in their showdown in 2004, wrested the WBC belt from Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera with a unanimous decision in their classic showdown last week in Las Vegas.

After the fight, Marquez had hinted at giving Barrera another crack at the crown in a rematch, which HBO promptly scheduled in September in the week of the Mexican Independence Day. But Sulaiman announced that under WBC rules, Marquez will have to defend the title against the No. 1 contender, which is Pacquiao.

The 28-year-old Gen. Santos native is currently in the thick of preparations for this fight against unheralded but unbeaten Jorge Solis, also of Mexico, on April 14 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

In his letter, Sulaiman said the WBC had previously designated Pacquiao as mandatory contender to the title then held by Barrera. However, with the victory of Marquez over Barrera, the WBC asked Pacquiao whether he would accept being mandatory contender and wanted a response by 6 p.m. (Mexico time) March 23.

Sulaiman also wished Pacquiao the best of luck in his fight against Solis.

Marquez earlier said he wanted a rematch with Pacquiao, claiming that the result of their first meeting was a thorn he wanted to remove.

Pacquiao himself has indicated he was looking forward to a rematch to prove, once and for all, that he deserved to be declared the champion.

However, the problem in the Pacquiao-Marquez rematch remains the legal dispute between Golden Boy Promotions with whom Pacquiao signed a seven-fight contract in mid-September last year and Top Rank Promotions, which signed him to a four-fight deal some two months later.
