Poker players of NT: How did you learn to play??

Where did yall learn to play? And what are some good texts on how to get better?

I just started messing with Full Tilt Poker and built up the 1,000 chips they give you to start into 30,000 so i get the basic concepts and everything...

Post tips and books please!

1,000 play chips to 30,000 is nothing. People with play chips play like idiots.

i lost money first, then read up on it. think i started with sklansky. between that and having people to bounce ideas with, it was easy to pick up the basics.

That might work once or twice, but eventually you will be called and you will lose.

Ill check out that site, and i know its really not a big deal but i thought it was pretty good being that i just started playing poker yesterday

Phil Hellmuth got a couple of E-books, Mikey the mouth and I mean theres like a poker show on like 10 channels on cable tv (seriously), watch how the pros play, I mean realistically in NL holdem you cant go all in with nothing under pocket 10's pre flop ( Cant believe I typed that, I hate poker lingo). and try not to play to the river..............Oh I how hate the RIVER. I got my feet wet @ the Hardrock last weekend, online and real life are two completely different worlds, cats got the shades on and everything, (dont really take TELLS too seriously) I mean you could flip a hundred bucks into 1000 if you are patient and like the song goes KNOW WHEN TO FOLD.
 
dead !#!, i learned playing online and watching the poker tournaments.. from there i implied my
own techniques and mind games....
 
I played alot of home games nickel dimes honestly so I wouldnt lose a fortune! Its not that hard you will get the hand of it then after you leard the basics rules then you can learn how to be a good player
 
practice... alot of home games... alot of patience... alot of attention... alot of thought... alot of deduction...
 
-I would get the beginner books by either Dan Harrington or T.J. Cloutier (there are other good books out there, but these two do a god job of breaking down things in a
simplistic manner). As you get better, I would move on towards their advanced books and/or books by Negreanu, Doyle Brunson's Super System and Erik Lindgren
-Go to a casino and start with low-limit poker... Playing live and for real money is a HUGE difference then online, play money, and home games
-As your knowledge grows (and hopefully your bankroll), you can move on in stakes in both cash games and tournaments.
-If you want to know about basic money management, feel free to pm me, as after 6 years of playing, I have finally developed a pretty solid system.
 
first and foremost, play money is nothing like real money..

In all honesty, skip the books...start at micro stakes and learn/experience...that's the only way you'll fully learn and start building your style....and tourney play is far different from cash games so you have to be more specific if you want some pointers..

know poker lingo, know what position your in and how to play position...


grab a few books with tips down the road..
 
I learned a few years back watching a hold em tourney before the super bowl came on. I picked it up pretty easily.

river cards are *!%!*# up to me sometimes. one time i lost with pocket aces, because a friend of mine hit a runner runner flush =|
 
My uncle taught me when I was like 8 years old and IMO don't go towards play table chips...nothing but donks and you'll be frustrated. Play money tables are like face book poker. The Absolute worse type of poker out there.

Good books to read are obviously super systems and ace in the river. Gus Hansen every hand revealed is good.
 
Got the basic concepts and played with some friends. Lost like $50 and I was like NOPE so I went and bought a few books. Read up. Got NICE. Took their money.
 
I learned in 2003 with the poker boom

. I learned through TV, a few poker dvds, and with experience playing with friends. Right now I'm reading Super System 2 in my spare time.
 
Started playing online back in October 09. I still don't get the first round of betting.

How come some play the minimum and others put nothing in the pot?
