Take a lighter to them. Dip a q tip in rubbing alcohal and apply to where you want em ripped or exposed, the alcohal with light it fast and the burn pattern looks tight. Don't let your shoes catch fire, just enough to burn off the canvas. www.culturafina.com

I personally think burning them looks absolutely ridiculous. Use an exacto knife and cut where you like.
