Question about purchasing shoes overseas

I'm looking to purchase some shoes from an overseas company (located in the U.K. to be specific), and I had a question about customs/import fees.  I've never purchased shoes from out of this country, and was wondering how the fees work.  Who do I pay the customs/import fee to?  Typically, how much are the fees?  Will they be shipped directly to my door, or do I have to pick them up from customs/post office?   I live in CA.  Thanks for the help, and please move if this is in the wrong forum.

is it a shoe store or just a consignment or warehouse place. Shipping at end is $12 but that is for flat rate shipping. Id suggest you contact the store to see how much it is. They should be shipped to your door if its ups or fedex.
