LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The math teacher at a tough East LosAngeles high school who inspired the movie "Stand and Deliver," hasdied.
He was 79.
A family friend said Jaime Escalante died Tuesday in Reno, Nevada, where he was undergoing treatment for bladder cancer.
An immigrant from Bolivia, he transformed Garfield HighSchool by motivating struggling students to tackle and excel atadvanced math and science. The school had more Advanced Placementcalculus students than all but three other public high schools in thecountry.
Escalante then brought his math and science curriculum toSacramento in 1991. He taught at Hiram Johnson High School for eightyears until he retired in 1998.
The actor Edward James Olmos played Escalante in the film based on his story.
Olmos said Escalante proved that inner city students canperform at the highest levels, and left an important legacy forAmerican education.
