I believe that the SMART Gilas Pilipinas National Team Program deserves it's own thread for updates regarding it's long-term program for basketball development in the Philippines.

The previous thread about the Philippine national basketball team is already outdated and is also largely associated with the ill-fated Powerade Team Pilipinas.

Moving on...

Gilas hopeful of signing up American prospect
(The Philippine Star) Updated March 31, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA,Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas is close to signing up AmericanDwane Jones, a 6-11 D-League standout who is being eyed fornaturalization.

“I just spoke to his agent today (yesterday) and it looks like hewill accept,

Dwayne Jones can really dominate the paint if he plays for the squad. his inside presence should help us. also a potential defensive behemoth.

Plus, his multiple callups stuffs up his resume very well.

I feel that DJ, if he signs for Gilas [fingers crossed], could really be the missing piece, after the disappointment caused by the previous two imports..

based on the past few prospects, imo giles still is the best fit considering how his style of play, talent/skills, age, and potential too bad he had too many off court distractions.

Smart Gilas lost its first tune up game in Serbia to the highlycompetitive Mettalac team, a division 1 team from the Serbian League,76-86. Beefed up by a 7'1" former New Jersey Nets behemoth and anincredible 11/22 3-pt. shooting output, the Vallevo team led by as manyas 20 points in the 4th quarter until Fi...l-Am... Marcio Lassiter ledthe Gilas rally with 4 straight treys. - Jude Roque

From Quinito Henson's Philippine Star article:

"Gilas’ original naturalization candidate C. J. Giles was released by Sporting Al Riyadi of Beirut due to “bad disciplinary issues

I remember Dwane Jones when St Joe's had their dream NCAA run in 2004. Of course, the backcourt tandem of Jameer Nelson and Delonte West hogged the limelight then.

Anyhow, hope this one works out for Gilas as another import mishap will definitely not do any good especially since they've struck out twice already.

SMART Gilas def. SuperFund 91-84.

Japeth had a team high of 19 points.

SuperFund is set to join Serbia's Division 1.

Chris Tiu didn't play due to a strained hamstring.

Can't wait for Saturday's game against the #2 team in Serbia next to Partizan-Belgrade!

are the games televised? does anybody know if they have live streaming as well, thanks!

I don't think they're televised.

From the pics I've seen on Facebook, it looks like they're just playing the games in a practice facility.

BC Belgrade - 80
Smart-Gilas - 79

Nice! Hope they can keep in step with those guys!

Any new prospects for naturalization?

Hopefully PHX gets eliminated in the 1st round.

I completely agree...they should also play Olympiakos, FC Barcelona and Cska Moscow!!! Hahaha.

Jude Roque- "Smart Gilas lost steam in the last 4 mins of play and fellprey to the mighty Partizan team of Serbia, 71-87. Even when thestarters of the powerful Euroleague semifinalist did not suit up, theSerbians still dominated the game but not without a gritty stand fromthe hard-fighting Pinoys, who managed to rally from 17 pts down to just7 in the last 5 mins. Lassiter sizzled with 24 pts while Casio chippedin 16."

Gilas lost to Partizan 87-71 @ Pioneer Hall. 5 members of their 1stteam plus 2nd team players. They were scoring from inside and outside.
We had problems executing offensively & lost reboundingbattle 42-20. 7'3 Nemanja Besovic controlled the inside. We shot poorlyfrom...
...outside & cldnt convert our fast break attempts. Lassiter 21pts. Casio 16 pts. Overall, we cld have played much better.

word around is that SMART GILAS is eyeing D-League "Human Eraser" Greg Stiemsma.

"Stiemsma averaged 17.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game while playing for the Sioux Falls Sky Force." [source : manilastandardtoday ]

they sayin the last game he played, he had like 8 blocks.

apparently tho, the Timberwolves are planning to call him up.

hope the best things happen for Smart Gilas.
