Barack Obama’s pointed message to the ‘politically woke’ crowd: Get over it!

‘This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re politically woke, and all that stuff — you should get over that quickly’, Obama says
Stop with the wokeness!
Stop with the wokeness!
‘The world is messy. There are ambiguities. This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re politically woke, and all that stuff — you should get over that quickly.’
That’s the message former President Barack Obama delivered to a the crowd at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago on Tuesday, where No. 44 was joined by his wife Michelle, filmmaker Ava DuVernay and actor Billy Porter.

Obama also took a shot at how Twitter TWTR-1.54% one of the current president’s chosen means of communication, is worsening the dialogue and not providing much-needed change.

“Like if I tweet or hashtag about how you didn’t do something right, or used the wrong verb, then I can sit back and feel pretty good about myself because: ‘Man, did you see how woke I was? I called you out,’” he said. “That is not activism.”

Here’s the clip that went viral across social media:

And here’s the full discussion:

Former Obama communications director Jen Psaki told CNN the message was likely aimed at Democrats as they gear up for the 2020 election.

“If we are launching purity tests... we are going to have such a small party and will not be able to win,” she said. “Governing is not about saying: ‘You don’t agree with me, then you can’t be part of the conversation.’”

Cancelling the behavior isn't the main issue, it's the feeling of superiority that makes it so rampant.
THIS. The pendulum is swinging the other way and going against the grain will be where that feeling will be chased. The snake is going to devour its own tail.

People have a confirmation bias based on their social media circle.

At no time in history has a fool had millions of people confirming clearly wrong behavior as correct.

Even local jokers can get 100s of likes for something clearly wrong but the feedback they're getting from social media is telling them otherwise

What the hell are you mentioning me. I generally agree with his comments. He is not saying give toxic people breaks he is saying stop doing at people that are on aggregate good but not pure as a means to make yourself feel good.

Furthermore, and most importantly he is saying don't use call out culture as a substitute for real activism. If you see a problem, then try to help bring about real substantive change.

He is not saying you shouldn't take issue with bigots, racist like the alt-right and ninjahood ninjahood . He is not saying problematic people get a past.

I volunteer my time and money to real causes in the real world. I don't my actions in online spaces as a substitute for boots on the ground action. I don't engage with people on social media anyway.

Defenders of trash people like Ninja just thinks Obama, who he criticizes at length otherwise, somehow validates all the caping for bigots he does.

He didn't.

Anyway I know your *** just wants to kick the hornet's nest anyway. Ninja's reactionary *** probably gonna threaten me again, so you will have your entertainment. Congrats

Wow, you just couldn't help yourself. :smh:

We talked off-line about this but instead of tearing another black man down, why don't you try and rehab his mindset? We have to stick together

Ninja will make threats and act up, you got an answer from me and you will get your laughs.
Famb, I'm just not gonna be in on the joke today. Maybe tomorrow.

yes it is.. irrational would be a compliment... only people who demand absolute fealty to issues other than social justice warriors/call out culture is gang members and mean girls...both corny constituents in their own right.

i can only hope it puts a nail in this craziness...some folks here should take note.

people just need to stop validating and enabling that fake outrage and gotcha mentality. It’s usually done with malicious intent at that.

The Kevin Hart stuff from a few months back is a perfect example. He apologized and expressed remorse over old jokes which weren’t seen as taboo as they currently are when he said them 10 years ago. He apologized and the response to his apology showed how insincere the cancel crowd is. It wasn’t good enough for them and only further emboldened them to vilify him more. The apology wasn’t good enough.

Crazy thing is, if you went through old tweets and did a history check on a good chunk of the cancel crowd, I guarantee they have their skeletons (nothing wrong with that) but I know they wouldn’t want the same outrage toward them that they throw at others.

Imagine thinking that Obama isn't aligned with proponents of social justice, and thinking that it's some time of pejorative.

Like Rusty said, this has nothing to do with consistently condoning bigotry, racism, sexism, anti-semtism, etc. This is about people running to castigate and "cancel" people from mistakes or misspeaking, which I agree with, that on its face is completely stupid. None of this has to do with the people that Ninja supports, from Trump to R. Kelly.

That's the big issue tho, people aren't gonna stop because their's just an echo chamber of people who just look for the next person to "cancel" They just want the social media attention & they damn sure get it.

It’s just funny to me how people want to cancel certain things or topics from decades ago (specifically comedic stuff, or music, or whatever) but again, people are wildin’ out EVEN more than they were back then.

kids and adults can literally access any raunch or debauchery, at their finger tips. That’s what’s so laughable. Go on ANY social media timeline and all you see is mostly porn, nudity, people acting a whole fool on cameras, violent fights, people doing illicit drugs.....

but hey, let’s cancel everything. It’s backwards out here and I just laugh.
