I have been listening to some Curtis Mayfield and been trying to get on to some Old School Gangster music similar to Mayfield's
-Album Suggestions

-Great Bands

Man I'm in the same boat as you, trying to go back a few...

Just rattling off the dome, definitely look into these artists/songs/etc:

The Whispers (And the beat goes on (where Will got the Miami beat), Rock Steady, In the raw)
Commodores: Lady you bring me up.. A lot of their stuff is solid (also look into lionel richie solo)
Earth Wind and Fire: Lets groove, after the love is gone, september
Stevie Wonder: Part time lovers
George Clinton/Parliament stuff is good... Atomic Dog (Snoop Dogg what's my name beat)
