Superman Breaks The Bank As 'Action Comics' #1 Sells For $1 Million
Action Comics #1It's a bird — it's a plane — it's Superman flying off with a $1 million price tag attached to his red-and-blue spandex!
According to The Guardian, a 1938 edition of "Action Comics" #1 was sold yesterday for the massive price of $1 million, officially becoming the most expensive comic book purchase of all time. Previous copies of "Action Comics" #1 have sold in the ballpark of $300,000 to $450,000.
This particular issue of "Action Comics" was graded an 8.0 out of 10 by Certified Guaranty Company — better known as CGC — hence the unprecedented price tag.
"The fact that this book is completely unrestored and still has an 8.0 grade, it's kind of like a diamond or a precious stone," said John Dolman, a drummer for "System of a Down" and comic book enthusiast that owns Torpedo Comics. "It's very rare."
Dolman himself once paid $317,000 for a copy of "Action Comics" #1.
The identities of the purchaser and the seller are currently unknown, though sources say that the seller is a "well-known individual" in New York with an extensive comic book collection.
"It ['Action Comics' #1] is considered by most people as the most important book," Dolman surmised. "It kind of ushered in the age of the superheroes."
