SMC-RP RECOVERS IN TIME, ROUTS BAHRAIN
Nationals make it to FIBA Asia Champions Cup quarters

Thursday, 17 May 2007

TEHRAN, Iran San Miguel-RP finally found its groove and beat Bahrain's Al Muharraq 99-80 Wednesday to make the quarterfinals of the 18th FIBA Asia Champions Cup at the Azadi Stadium here.
Grittily bucking a sprained right ankle, Danny Seigle scored 20 points while three other Nationals, led by Asi Taulava's 18 points and 14 rebounds, also turned in double figures in a game they mostly dominated from the get-go.

"This game is like letting out all our frustrations, you know?" said Seigle, his ankle injured in Monday's loss to Kazakhstan's Astana Tigers heavily wrapped in
ice after the game.

The win was just the first in four games for the Nationals, but enough to make them the third and last qualifier from Group B to Friday's quarterfinals.

All because of the fact, RP coach Chot Reyes pointed out, his team finally went up against an opponent that didn't have a dominant import like the seven-footers
from Iran, Kazakhstan and Syria.

"They (Bahrain imports) are quietly efficient and blue collar workers, much like taller versions of a (Alaska import) Rosell Ellis. But our discrepancy in size is not that big and that's the only opening we needed," he said.

Six-foot-seven A.M. Akintunde had 21 points and 12 rebounds but fellow African reinforcement, 6-10 S.B. Edeghe, only had 13 points and five rebounds against the defense anchored on Taulava and Rico Villanueva.

"I also like going up against 7-footers. But if they're a bit shorter it's still fine by me," said the 6-9 Taulava, with 6-6 Villanueva the shortest among the centers in this tournament.

Thursday is a rest day for the tournament, but not for the Nationals who have squeezed in a tuneup game with the Iran National team that has a 7-5 center and two 6-11s.

Reyes said it is part of his team's buildup for next week's SEABA tournament and July's FIBA Asia Men's championship. "We may be meeting the same Iranian team in the FIBA Asia so better to get a feel of them now," he said.

The Nationals must make do without Tony de la Cruz, who got added to the list of their injured when he suffered a left ankle sprain just seconds after being fielded in the first quarter.

"I stepped on somebody's foot and felt my ankle pop," related the 6-4 forward who was initially diagnosed with a second-degree sprain.

Jimmy Alapag (left ankle) was used sparingly and Mick Pennisi (bruised left knee) was not fielded at all against Bahrain. But Jayjay Helterbrand ably did most of the playmaking chores and Ranidel de Ocampo and Kerby Raymundo were foremost among those who helped patrol the lanes or provide help defense.

For sure, firepower was not a problem this time as the Nationals buried Bahrain with 11 triples before finishing with a 39-for-71 clip from the field. Ren-Ren Ritualo provided the most sustaining fire by scoring 18 points off the bench.

Those were translated into surges, the most telling when the Nationals unleashed an 18-4 bomb ignited by Ritualo's eight points that gave them a 61-42 spread and the most lethal capped by Dondon Hontiveros' four points for their first of three 21-point leads, 89-68

The scores:

San Miguel-RP 99 Seigle 20, Taulava 18, Ritualo 18, Caguioa 11, Hontiveros 9, De Ocampo 8, Alapag 8, Villanueva 4, Helterbrand 2, Raymundo 1, Dela Cruz 0.

Bahrain 80 Akintunde 21, Alderazi 19, Edeghe 13, Al Tawash 12, Mohamed 8, Ebrahim 5, Al Doy 2, M. Ali 0, Ali 0, Thaqafi 0.

Quarterscores: 20-17; 43-38; 79-62; 99-82.

NATIONALS OFF TO THAILAND FOR 1ST LEG OF JOURNEY TO BEIJING
Now were off to war Reyes
s for the San Miguel-Pilipinas team when it departs for the Southeast Asian Basketball Association Mens Championship in Ratchaburi, Thailand, hoping to negotiate its way past an armada of ambushers from Malaysia, Indonesia and the mysterious host country.

The Nationals, including center Rico Villanueva who got the green light from Red Bull management to stay on, will fly to Bangkok via Philippine Airlines before taking a two-hour bus ride 60 kilometers west of the capital to Ratchaburi.

They are expected to reach their billeting hotel at 2:30 p.m.

Accompanying them are national coach Chot Reyes, assistants Aboy Castro and Nash Racela, and strength and fitness coordinator Dennis Aenlle.

Forward Tony de la Cruz, who sprained an ankle during the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Tehran where the team finished fourth, will follow on the 25th when the Nationals open their bid to secure a berth in the FIBA-Asia Mens Championship in Tokushima, Japan against Singapore.

The SEABA tourney is the qualifying tournament for the FIBA-Asia which, in turn, is the Olympic qualifier for Beijing

Were looking forward to this competition, said Reyes, who arrived with the rest of the team late Monday night from Iran.

Everything weve done, the camp in the States and the Iran trip, is geared toward giving the players enough time to be together, know each other and understand the value of being a team.

SMC-RP drew a bye on opening day Thursday, takes on Singapore on May 25, Indonesia on the 26th, Malaysia on the 27th, and Thailand on the 28th, with the top two finishers going to Tokushima.

Obviously, theres always concern in international play, especially with news that the Thais have US NCAA Division I players in their lineup, Reyes said. Weve not been able to confirm the reports, so were not going to take the opposition lightly.

The haste with which the Nationals have to regroup and then fly off to Thailand left them with limited time to be with their families upon their return from Tehran, an opportunity they took advantage of Tuesday.

Reyes, for one, had dinner with his wife Cherry and kids Joshua, Moses, Isaiah and Rebekah Monday night, played a round of golf at Wack Wack East Course early yesterday morning, spent most of the day packing, attended a Nike affair in the evening, and later had another quiet dinner with his family.

Now were off to war, Reyes said.

Yeah we're expected to dominate the SEA region. What the RP team needs to do is be able to compete against the bigger boys of China, Korea, Japan etc.

SMC-RP WHIPS INDONESIA, STAYS UNBEATEN
Caguioa, Taulava, Seigle outscore opponents by themselves
2007-05-27_seaba_4929.jpg
against Singapore which they trailed by five points in the first quarter Friday, the Nationals were all business from the opening buzzer against Indonesia, which stunned Malaysia in their opening game.

They raced to a 7-0 start and never yielded the lead although their defense continued to fall prey to three-point shooters, with the Indonesians hitting three in the first 10 minutes to keep the game interesting.

Acknowledging the superiority of their opponents, the Indonesians spread their offense and dribbled away half of the shot clock before launching their offense driving to the basket and kicking out to their outside shooters.

Occasionally they would catch the Nationals tied up trying to recover or a step slow switching or fighting screens, accounting for all but a six-point edge, 19-13, at the end of the first period.

SMC-RP had its first double-digit advantage two minutes into the second quarter on a free throw by Mark Caguioa, 23-13, before Seigles fast break broke the 10-point barrier, 30-18, with 2:48 remaining.

The floodgates opened after that, with the Nationals posting a 40-point advantage, 85-45, just before the final buzzer.

The scores:

SMC-RP 85 Caguioa 23, Taulava 11, Seigle 9, Villanueva 8, De Ocampo 6, Raymundo 6, Helterbrand 6, Ritualo 5, Hontiveros 5, Alapag 3, Pennisi 3, Canaleta 0.

INDONESIA 48 Faisal 13, Cakorda 8, Sumargo 7, Indrajaya 5, Widayat 5, Gunawan 2, Jakesuma 2, Prihantono 2, Sandkh 2, Wuysang 2, Wellyanson 0, Tiara 0.

Quarterscores: 19-13; 37-20; 58-36; 85-48
