The College Basketball Post

I've tried to keep up with overseas trips:

Kansas won 2 close games. Andrew White has lead them in scoring. McLemore got hurt and I guess might get shut down for the rest of the trip (?). Just looking at the box score it feels like they're missing someone, but I guess not.

Mizzou won today. No Pressey on the trip. Earnest Ross and Keion Bell both had 17. out of the 3 wing transfers Jabari Brown gets the hype but I think they're both better than him.

OK State won their first game today- Nash had 18 and 10. Markel Brown had 18 and Smart had 12, 4 and 4.

VCU smacked both teams they've played by 50 or so. competition varies big time with these things but they're loaded. can't find box scores, though.

Tennessee has won both games. Stokes leading scorer in both. He's a beast. I really like that team this year. Golden/Maymon/Stokes is a pretty damn good core and just need the wings to step up.

Virginia is 1-1. Jontel Evans playing well and Mike Tobey, too. didn't think much of Tobey but he's started both games and put up numbers. (FR big)

NC State is 3-0. TJ Warren has gone for 20+ in two of the games, kid just scores the basketball. Lo Brown playing well - 25 in G1, 17 and 10 in G2. Purvis being held out by NCAA.

can only find 1 result with Georgia. they won and Caldwell-Pope had 14.

Wash St is 2-1. Demarquise Johnson being held out by NCAA. Brock Motum - 25 and 9, 28 and 13, 21 and 7. He's good.

Purdue won their first game. Raphael Davis had 15. no way they don't have a down year, too young and the older guys left aren't talented.

K-State lost their first game by 14. Bruce Weber era is underway.

The SEC schedules came out today . If Vandy wins more than 5 or 6 games in conference they should give Kevin Stallings SEC coach of the year, regardless of what anybody else does.

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis may have pulled off his greatest scheduling coup.

Hollis told ESPN.com on Thursday that he has secured commitments from 16 schools to participate in a two-tournament men's basketball event in honor of Nike co-founder Phil Knight's 80th birthday.
Schools committed to Phil Knight event
Michigan State AD Mark Hollis told ESPN.com that 16 Nike-sponsored schools have committed to participate in a two-tournament event held in honor of Phil Knight. A list of schools committed:

Kentucky (SEC)

Florida (SEC)

Michigan State (Big Ten)

Ohio State (Big Ten)

Duke (ACC)

North Carolina (ACC)

Connecticut (Big East)

Georgetown (Big East)

Texas (Big 12)

Oklahoma (Big 12)

Stanford (Pac-12)

Oregon (Pac-12)

Xavier (A-10)

Butler (A-10)

Gonzaga (WCC)

Portland (WCC)

The two tournaments, each consisting of eight teams, would take place in Portland, Ore. during a four-day period in November 2017. Knight's 80th birthday is Feb. 24, 2018.

This event would have more collective star power than any of the previous tournaments played at Maui, New York, Orlando or the Bahamas. The 16 Nike-sponsored schools -- mostly elite programs -- include Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina.

Hollis said he has commitments from schools representing all of college basketball's power conferences. NCAA rules prohibit schools from the same conference playing in the same event, hence the two eight-team tournaments.

The other schools are Florida, Ohio State, Connecticut, Georgetown, Texas, Oklahoma, Stanford, Oregon, Xavier, Butler, Gonzaga and Portland.

"All of these great basketball programs have been supported by Phil Knight and Nike," Hollis said. "His support of the programs have created scholarships and resources for these departments to excel."

Hollis said the event isn't driven by Knight or Nike, but rather by the schools' athletic directors who want to express their thanks. He also acknowledged that there are a few potential factors that could derail the current list of teams in the next five years -- a change in sneaker sponsorship or conference affiliation, for example.

"You can only have one school per conference, and with the current climate you never know," Hollis said. "We have the commitments to move forward from the 16 schools. What we're doing is creating the greatest in-season basketball event of all-time."

Hollis said how to split the conference teams hasn't been determined yet. The format for the event would have each set of eight teams play games at the Rose Garden and Veterans Memorial Coliseum on a Thursday in late November. The two events would switch sites for Friday's semifinals and consolation bracket.

The events would take Saturday off for college football programming, then return Sunday, with the third-place game and championship at the Rose Garden and the consolation at Veterans.

The format would be similar to the one used by the Old Spice Classic, Anaheim Classic and Puerto Rico Tip-Off Classic. Hollis said there is also discussion of having eight other teams that are Nike-sponsored to come to play games as well, but not against this field.

Hollis said he has contacted ESPN about televising the event. ESPN senior vice president Burke Magnus confirmed the discussion and said that ESPN is interested in televising it in 2017.

There are discussions to bring a professor from each of the 16 schools for a think-tank educational session for the event, Hollis said, and the coaches and athletic directors want a tie-in with the Jimmy V Fund for cancer research, as well.

Hollis said the reason this event has to be scheduled five years in advance is schools already are committed to pre-conference tournaments through 2016.

Hollis has made headlines for his creative scheduling and was at the forefront of the unique basketball game played between Michigan State and UNC on the active USS Carl Vinson on Nov. 11, 2011. He also quickly signed off on the Spartans playing UConn on Nov. 9 at Germany's Ramstein Air Base.

An NCAA investigation of Shabazz Muhammad will not be completed in time for the UCLA freshman to travel with the team for a series of exhibition games in China next week.

The university confirmed Wednesday that he will remain behind.

The 6-foot-6 swingman is the jewel of UCLA's highly touted freshman class.

The NCAA is trying to determine whether Muhammad received improper benefits from the brother of an assistant coach at his high school or from a financial planner who helped fund a summer team on which he played.

Scrutiny of top-level athletes has been a hot topic in the years since the NCAA found that USC tailback Reggie Bush and his family received cash and gifts from two would-be sports marketers in San Diego.

"The real issue here is, if you have high-profile players, your enforcement staff has to monitor those students at a higher level," the late Paul Dee, former chairman of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions, said at the time. "High-profile players demand high-profile compliance."

Ironically, the NCAA would later launch an investigation of football players at Miami, where Dee had been athletic director.

UCLA officials declined to comment further on Muhammad's case. The player has said that he expects to be cleared.

The Bruins will leave for China on Aug. 22. Over the ensuing week, they will play against two university teams and one professional team, the Shanghai Sharks, as part of a weeklong sports festival in Beijing and Shanghai.

The team's other top freshmen — Jordan Adams, Kyle Anderson and Tony Parker — are expected to make their debuts in those games.

Tyler Ennis to Syracuse as expected, he's going to be an awesome college point guard, floor general of the highest order not flashy, but simply doesn't rattle always makes the right decision regardless of pressure, can't teach that. :pimp:

Was with Tyler Ennis today, he seems relieved to get that part of the recruiting process over with but he's trying to make sure Syracuse lands some other notable guys...

Backup plan for Shabazz:

There will be more than one basketball team in Los Angeles this year with a Gasol brother on its roster.

Adria Gasol, the 18-year-old brother of NBA big men Pau and Marc Gasol, has enrolled as a student at UCLA and intends to walk-on to the team next season. A UCLA spokesman said the youngest Gasol brother will not join the Bruins on their exhibition tour of China next week, but he will begin practicing with the team this fall.

Although the youngest Gasol is 6-foot-10 and has impressive bloodlines, expectations for him at UCLA should be realistic.

He wasn't interested in following in his brothers' footsteps in basketball growing up and played sparingly as a freshman and sophomore at Lausanne High School in Memphis before returning to Spain the past two years. He is far enough behind his brothers at the same stage that it would be a surprise if he is able to make much impact at UCLA in the near future.

Nonetheless, Adria's famous last name alone should make him a favorite among UCLA fans and a source of intrigue in the final minutes of blowouts.

If he focuses on basketball and develops into a surprise contributor at some point in the next few years, then that's a coup for UCLA. And if he does nothing more than persuade Pau or Marc to occasionally work out against the UCLA frontcourt during the offseason, then that's still a greater contribution than the average walk-on makes.

Jermaine lawrence is right behind him....hoefully ennis s still there when briscoe gets on campus

If anyone cares Team Takeover beat Baltimore's finest when Aquille Carr's layup was blocked at the buzzer today. I also talked to today and he is still in a boot and won't be fully healed for another 4 to 6 weeks. He still doesn't know where he is going to school or what school he is leaning too. Also saw Mikael Hopkins who is still too skinny and Quinn Cook who looks to be in good shape.

I should've gotten tickets to that Legends Classic with UCLA, IU and Georgetown . Almost all the good seats are gone.
