As noted in the Final Fantasy thread, we didn't really have a JRPG thread. To keep this thread active, lets keep it general and about any RPG; Action, Strategy, Open World, ect.

This genre is near and dear to a lot of peoples hearts, as many of us grew up sinking hours into Fallout, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Shin Megami Tensei, KOTOR, and countless other games.

One of the endearing things about the vast majority of these games is that the mechanics are simple to understand, but offer almost endless replayability. And typically RPG's age better than most other genres, as the gameplay isnt built around hardware. Dragon Quest II is an 8-bit game that released in 1987 but still offers an excellent experience.

While games like FF7, KOTOR, and Chrono Cross are seeing remasters and remakes, new games in the Pokemon and Tales series, or highly anticipated Elden Ring and Horizon: Forbidden West keep the new experiences coming.

Console or platform agnostic, please feel free to discuss your favorite, ask questions, and reminisce here.

Dope thread!

I hear Yakuza Like a Dragon is a pretty good turn based rpg. I have it on PC but have not started the game.

Currently play shin megami tensei 5

I have so many PS One classic rpg games purchased on in my PSN account. Outside of PS vita I was there was another way for me to play them on the go

Ive been waiting for a good sales on PSN for Yakuza Like a Dragon. What are your thoughts on SMT5? I am one of the few people (maybe in the word ) that didnt like Persona 5. I always preferred the SMT games.

Im currently playing Valkyria Revolution (not good), Assassin's Creed Valhalla (good but too long), and Tales of Vesperia (good but I got side tracked).

Probably start a FFIX playthrough this month at some point.

Looking forward to DQ12 but I dropped DQ11 after about 65 hours. That 3rd act basically killed my desire to finish it.

Yakuza: LAD is really good but I didn’t finish it either. I will get back to it at some point.

Currently playing Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster (PC). I also have Final Fantasy IX on PC and will do a playthrough using the Moguri mod.

Good looks on the thread man.

I have been slowing getting back to JRPGs which is definitely my roots. Currently in rotation:
  • Fire Emblem Heroes: Three Houses
  • Persona 5 Golden
  • Final Fantasy 7R (PS5)
I will say that RPGs hit on all fronts (music, gameplay, emersion) and remind me of why I am passionate about gaming. I also use them as one of my language learning tools (Japanese) so it is even better. It is also nice to see that the Japanese developers are still making straight-forward RPGs.

Also - for those of you who have not played Sekiro please give it a shot at least. It isn't for everyone but if you can get through it :pimp:

Bad Religion Bad Religion go ahead and copp that Switch man

For the sake of my sanity, please remove CP2077 from the notable releases.

Thank you.

I've been no lifing Monster Hunter Rise for the past 2 weeks, game is incredible.

goddamn 65 hrs. That’s more than I put into it

by 3rd act, you mean the post game stuff right? I didn’t even try it, I know what happens story wise and I wasnt happy with it. I’ll just pretend the story ends where the main game ends.

DQXI probably my favorite jrpg of the past few years.

I was little confused to when people refer to the 3rd act but I believe it’s the part of the game where you
go back in time and redo certain events in order to bring one of the sisters back to life
. I just couldn’t stomach doing it all over again man

Yup that part is the post game material.

The main story was two acts and takes about 40 hours to beat.

the post game is good for completionists because that’s where you get the hardest bosses in the game but I wasn’t with the dragon ball stuff so I dipped immediately

2nd act is exactly where I stopped as well.

Might go back to it one day. Its a great game, but I had a corrupt save file that wasnt backed up and havent started over.

Anyone play Tales of Arise yet? I was gonna cop on the steam sale but I got too many other RPGs I haven't started yet. I just started DQ XI, its aight so far I just got the circus dude.

I did. I enjoyed it and thought it was a good push in a new direction for the series. I’d say it’s top 3 in the Tales series, for me.

Great thread.
A friend of mine and I were just chatting about xenogears and how nice a remake would be.
Its downloaded to my ps3 and might hook that back up just to play it.

in for the thread. great topic. actually started FF8 for the first time on the switch. going in blindly with no help from youtube or anything. junction system is weird af to me. I have played FF7 so many times and just decided to go for it. Fallout 3, NV, 4, 5 are all under my belt as well. Bethesda games really. the grand kick off was ES: Oblivion. amazing game

OP how you gonna name drop chrono Cross and NOT chrono Trigger!? Quite possibly a top 3 RPG of all time , IMO my personal favorite....to this day I think about that game, the score was just incredible
