but a civilian job probably would take over for income.

I'm a Reservist in the Marine Corp and I must say I like it but damn sometimes I wish I went active.

spanishrock3r where are you going for basic? Parris Island or MCRD?
Two questions, can you switch to active, and how much do you get paid?

Yes you can switch to active from my understanding, and the pay? Well I'm not sure on the exact amount since it just changed again

Active Duty > Reserves.

You can actually still do some school while on Active Duty. My boy who is active duty, used to work with recruiting out in San Diego before he moved to DC.

I'm going Navy Active Duty. I'm just waiting for my bu-med waiver to clear, then after, finalizing the paperwork and then getting my boot camp date. Trying to get CTT.

You're going to have to elaborate on those two. I'm favoring the Reserves though because I still want to stay out here, have another job, and going to school.

Bu-med is a medical waiver that goes out to the main medical bureau out in DC. They deal with all kinds of waivers for active duty to new recruits. I got a burn on my arm, so technically, according to the new rules, I'm supposed to be DQ'd because that goes under self mutilation. But the Navy has a waiver for that. So pretty much the Navy paid for me to get a psyche eval, they ok'd it, had to fill out a statement with my recruiter as a witness saying that I'm not crazy and that I'm fully capable of doing whatever the Navy requires of me. It's taking a while tho because apparently, with all the downsizing the military is doing, they're probably holding me over until the next quota quarter. So I'm waiting for that to clear.

And as far as CTT goes, just an acronym for Cryptology Technician, a job I'm trying to get that I qualified for from my Asvab score.

In regards to being Active Duty, and doing school, it's possible. I'm not sure about doing a full load, but you could probably squeeze an evening class or two after your shift. My boy is an Active Duty Marine and he did that. The Military will pay for your school even as Active Duty. Be sure to go over with your recruiter on what you want to do as well. My boy is doing admin, and after six years, he's out in DC working at the Pentagon assisting big wigs and stuff. He's an E5 (rank) now. If you've got enough credits you can go in at a higher rank rather than starting off as an E1. I've got enough credits so I'm going in as an E3. I'm going to do school while Active Duty as well to get my Bachelors so I could go to Officer School.

Do all the MEPs do urine tests? None do hair tests, correct?

I'm pretty sure all MEPs do urine tests. They didn't do the hair test when I went to MEPs though.

You take your ASVAB first then go back to MEPs again for the physical.

Meps just does the urine test and not the hair folicle(sp) test....if you join active you will be able to do college no problem..i'm deployed in afghanistan right now and i'm taking college courses...for the rank you are when you come in doesn't mean squat until you hit nco status(e-5 and up) i came in as an e-2 right when we get back in june i'll be an e-4 specialist but they will prolly give my my corporal and send me to the board when my eligibility hits-the thing is if you come to a unit as an e-3 and they have e-2s that deployed with them you're still nothing to them...you become brothers with your buddies you deploy with...it will be easier to do college if you are some pog and don't have to do field time like us infantry but it's still possible...as far as recruiting now a days it's getting hard to get in the service because we are full up...at least in the army...i tried to get into the marines first but since i has a ged they said i need 15 credit hours of college so i just...really one of the best decisiions i've ever made with my life...it's not no six figures but i pulled in over 50 gs last year...pay is not the best...but when you think about it it's a good deal...if you're single...you have no rent/you get free food/you live right where you work/free insurance/up to 40 k for school...you can't go wrong...and if you're married like me...you get base pay/plus bah(basic allowance for housing- i get an extra thousand a month to live off post and my rent is only 600 so i pocket that extra 400 every month..straight win in my book...

Actually sometimes you'll do both in one shot.  I did, it was a 12 hr process plus I had to wait a couple more hours for my recruiter because he had an appointment at MEPS as well.  So all in all about 15 hours

Yeah, I had to go twice. Went the first time for my ASVAB, then went back two days later for my physical. I had to go back a third time for my psych eval the following week, and it was some contracted psych too. So I went to MEPs to ride a bus to another place with another dude who was getting a psych eval also.

extra excited, the air force is being very selective with recruits right now, they only want kids who score 50 or higher on asvab and they need to fill up SF positions aka the worst job in the air force, i know nothing about medical waivers besides that those cats usually get denied if your case is severe, but if yours is not and your serious, come on & join (no recruiter) im training on my own ,so i can join the boxing team

. Also the Marines > Army ,

50 or higher is the only exceptable ASVAB score in the military right now because of the economy, and the bonus went down since i joined. it was 20,000 but now its 10,000. but once you get in you can always change your job.....and the best part about it is.....you gettin paid the whole time
pimp.gif

Yea I know about the 50 or higher on the Asvab.

So why are the Security Forces the worst job? They're the ones that get deployed the most right? They go on the convoys? I wouldn't want to do that since I heard they have to jump out of planes and all that.
laugh.gif

nobody is jumping into combat zones anymore yo...hasn't happened since the iraq invasion...maybe for training only but let me tell you...that @$ is dope...

This. But I will say that if you do your time in the reserves and go to school it will definitely help as far as experience goes if you are looking for a job right out of school. If you go AD then you will qualify for the Post 911 GI Bill which is that $++%. I been in the Marine Reserve going on 6 yrs now. You also have the oppurtunity to not only go to school while on AD but do other training like if you were an IT guy you could do CCNA courses, Net+ courses, etc. for FREE. The benefits are great and like I said it will definitely set you up for a job.

OP What do you want to do?

One more question, when do you actually start getting paid?

I owe my school like 6gs (damn FAFSA didn't go through last semester) so I want to pay for that immediately while helping my mom out with her bills and my own bills. I'm saying all this because jobs aren't as abundant as they once were and the school won't let me in until I start paying into the money I owe them.

Leatherneck.com
I went here and got my questions answered about Marines.
If you go to a recruiter he will bend the truth. If you go reserves you are guarenteed a certain MOS (military occupation speciality) ; not sure if this is true because there are some marines that I have met at work that have all told me different. You want to pick mos that will help you in the future but if you want to have fun I would go infantry, combat engineer(il probably do this when I join, you get to mess with c4, build bridges, blow bridges up, blow stuff up, etc.), Or atillery(mortar, back up fire etc.). Although if you go reserves you won't get paid much. If you want benifits go army but their discipline isn't as great as the usmc. For example I know this kid who Is going to boot in a couple months and all he does is sit at home and smoke weed all day. You'll get paid A couple hundred but i'm lucky to have met so many marines at my job. Every marine I've met but one had told me they wouldn't trade in te experience for anything. Some of them in their 60s still wishing they were still in. Be prepared you will be shipped to afghanistan and you will be shot at.. That one marine who told me he didn't like his experience was because he saw his best friend get his legs blown off by an rpg back in fallujah. But anyways semper fi! Oohrah!

Future marine

All benefits are the same for all the branches reserve units i believe ....if your looking for easy paycheck from uncle same please don't join and not expecting too be deployed and be treated like @!#@!..especially if your going Marines....go join the coast / national guard or something ....
