Unemployment in the USA

I'd be willing to bet that 50% of the people who are currently unemployed aren't trying to get a job with many of them falling victim to frictional unemployment ... when you speak of "real" unemployment rate you are referring to a bunch of the population who "feel" underemployed ... and it's around 17% last time i checked ...

my theory is that the extra 7% in the underemployed category are those workers who have actually tried to get off unemployment and feel something is better than nothing ... again, i feel there are jobs which can be filled for about half of the 9.8% ...

Just so I can say I have a job? I do agree that a lot of people are miss using these benefits but there are just as many who have family's and are tryna make it. Its extremely hard out there right now and I felt it for a while there. *%!@ is sad.

Agreed with Xavier, Finnns and Mangudai.

I've been on both ends of the spectrum (hell I didn't even receive unemployment when I was trying to get a job).

It's not easy, our economy is in the ****ter.

Man, since when is unemployment half your salary? I had unemployment insurance when I worked for the Gov at DFAS and I only got like 110$ a week. It wasn't anywhere NEAR something I would be able to live on if I wasn't still in my parent's house and certainly no way I would "milk" that. I don't know if they still do it now, but you had to go on at least 2 job searches a week and keep it in your folder or you could call this automated # and input that you did. They didn't check everybody's but they would audit like 10% so if you were bs'ing and couldn't get signature from some business to certify that, you'd have to pay your money back. They also always had these resume workshops and find a job workshops and employer sponsored workshops every other week and if you didn't go, you wouldn't get paid for that week.

I ended up having to pay all of my money back because of a technicality, semantics really. Luckily, I wasn't on it that long.

I happen to be somewhere in the middle. I think in 99 weeks, you can find something. But at the same time, I don't think people are milking it because it's not a desirable way to live.

naw, there's ALOT of people who got degrees that can't find a job to save their life...you think people can do ANYTHING with da pennies

they get from unemployment?
laugh.gif

let's not even talk about if they actually have kids to support.

I'm talking about any job, not just something in the professional world. If after a year you ain't getting money, you should be looking at waiting tables, starbucks, etc.
so you're gonna tell a college student that's up to his eyeballs in student load debt who's got a doctorate degree "hey buddy i know you went to school and are qualified

for a 6 figure job, but mickey-D's is hiring"
laugh.gif
grin.gif

its called being over qualified.
Until a better job comes along, you gotta do what you gotta do, even if that means working a job your over-qualified for.
they DONT HIRE people who are overqualified.....
laugh.gif

how you got a MBA trying to flip burgers?
roll.gif

Tho depending on the place this happens a lot. Many if not all places will not hire someone with a master on human resources to work as a secretary.

Full time jobs are hard to come by now in days, the thing right know is to work 2 part time jobs. You wont get benefits but youll have hour guaranteed

this is everything here.  i been on unemployment since last june through no fault of my own.   why should i punish myself and settle for a job that pays less then what i currently make?  i'm very qualified and know how to present myself to employers but why would i take a job that wants to lowball me when i get more for not doing anything? give me a good reason for that.

bill collectors don't say, "oh he don't have a job or he took a lesser paying job so lets lower his bills" so why should i settle for less.  i've took it as a blessing in disguise though, i've been able to focus on school and make a few trips over this past year and a half while paying my bills through ebay money and having extra $ off financial aid.   the government and corporate america milk us so i might as well milk them back.  big corporations are the ones outsourcing all the jobs to india, jobs that should be in america to fix this problem.

besides i've read quite a few articles where employers don't want to hire the unemployed because they have a, "Desperate" vibe. also their reluctant to hire middle aged and older people because they rather hire younger people who are willing to take pennies instead.

lastly no ones getting more then 99 weeks of unemployment and only the states that are really bad like cali, ohio, and michigan get 20 weeks of fed ed so you can get to 99 weeks.

its 26 weeks on your initial claim 22 weeks on ur 1st extension  13 weeks on your second extension  13 weeks on your thirds  then 6 weeks on your 4th   then another 20 of fed ed if your state is eligible   after that your done.

wow! what does it take to be a correctional officer? Feelsbadmango

To those who think a job has to appear within 99weeks of unemployment, what about those who have kids/bills/student loans? Their unemployment could barely cover their costs of living. Then the employer is willing to offer something less than the current unemployment check. What part of the game is that?

smh...that's life, you can complain all you want but its up to you to make a change.
