Utah school allowing parents to opt students out of Black History Month curriculum

wtf is wrong with these people

Well Utah is 89% white . And montessori is a private school where the tuition starts at $5k. Alot of thess kids are doing algebra and complex math equations in elementary school. So the parents prolly feel instead of black history they could be taught some useful skill thsts applicable to their life and can help em get ahead.

Sad story. Administration is in a lose - lose situation. What should they do about the deep rooted racist and ignorant families in their school? Educate the kids, against the dumbass parents will, parents pull their kids out, administration is unemployed...
or allow parents to opt out, perpetuate racism and ignorance, face backlash, remain employed
And this why without national standards, K-12 education in America will always be ****.
Of course, without national standards, some folks in positions of power are free to push their dumbass ideas and concepts to the youth; that's why the racists and deniers of history are always supportive of efforts to keep the management of the curriculum local (state rights yaddi yadda).

I’m glad MJ hit that shot.

Hirokawa wrote that he “reluctantly” sent a letter to families stating that administrators were allowing them “to exercise their civil rights to not participate in Black History Month at the school.”
What “rights” are violated by teaching children the truth instead of exclusionary, White Supremacist historical fiction?

They gonna opt out on science classes next cuz they dont believe in vaccinations.

opt out of Family Life cuz of teaching bout condoms and contraception
This already happens. For decades now, certain parents have requested that their children be held out of lessons that include the theory of evolution or sex ed., for example.

Can Black kids opt out of American history? Can we opt out of English literature too? What about the pledge of allegiance?

They force us to learn THEIR history, but they don’t want to hear ours??? COWARDS
How many people here had to learn about Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology - but these parents think it’s a violation of their “civil rights” (heavy irony) to teach American history accurately?

Black history should not be relegated to a single (and avoidable) “unit”, because it is not a separate chapter of history.

Black history is American history. Black history is world history, and the history of human civilization. You cannot responsibly teach history without it. It’s like teaching the alphabet, but allowing children to opt out of learning vowels.

This isn’t just bad politics; it’s bad pedagogy.

There is seriously wrong with the world. But it does emphasize the point that everything starts with parenting. Now these children who will grow up ignorant on certain aspects of history and we honestly wouldn't be able to blame anything but the parents and how they were raised.

The Devil is trying to take it even further....

“That’s one of the main ways this whitewashing of history happens. We don’t even call it whiteness. We call those heroes. Founding Fathers. Americans. Pioneers. We pretend whiteness has nothing to do with those laudable labels,” she said.

I get to hear about how immigrants can come to this country, and then achieve at least a modicum of white privilege, but what this speaks to is how there will be none of the for the descendants of African slaves in this country. They, don't want anyone to know that Black people built that place, and that everything that is celebrated here, was indeed created by US, the descendants of those great people.
