I remember I was looking through a magazine on an airplane and saw an ad for these. This was the first time I actually wanted to go an pursue a shoe instead of just buying what they had at the store. Not to say I didn't have some sick shoes before that.

to me it was 2 things:

    - Penny - he came in when Jordan first retired and became a fan favorite right away. a silky smooth 6'7 point guard who was incredibly fun to watch. Nike did a great job promoting him as well.

    - Design - extremely eye catching and "wave of the future" looking. unlike any shoe anyone had ever seen before.

i see a lot of people saying the price, which is surprising to me cuz that was one of the downfalls and ultimately what kept me from getting a pair. obviously you look and say "wow, $200!?", but that's a bad thing to me. i was only in middle school so my dad still bought me all my shoes and i didn't like the idea that if i wore these to school everyone would know how spoiled i was (or would've been if i did have them). everyone knew i wore Jordans, Pennys, Barkleys, Webbers all the time but these were on a different level.

Too expensive for the average. The few people I knew with these had good jobs or multiple hustles. Where Im at we like shoes that are good looking, and built to last, and these are the epidomy. I've seen multiple fights over these shoes, and a couple pair still hang from light poles as I type. this is a dc/md shoe.

They were expensive and durable, like tanks. Plus they were good for ball.

I remember walking into a FootLocker in Jersey City about a week before the OG Foams dropped. They had a pair in a glass case with a mirrored shelf along with a small sign announcing the release date. I thought they were the most amazing shoes the second I saw them...and I still do.

I was in middle school when the Penny Foams 1st dropped. You knew who the spoiled kids were at that moment, because they had 'em. I couldn't understand at the time how Nike could drop a shoe that retailed for more than a Jordan! I had to beg for J's back then, so I knew I'd get my *** beat for even fixing my lips to ask my mom for a shoe that cost damn near $200!!

    I still thought/think they're fresh though...

Because I was a huge Penny fan, still am hope he does well in Miami!!!. Too bad he blew out his knee he would've been one of the greats if he stayed healthy.

Ummm I can't attribute liking the Penny Foams to anything besides for the 1997 NCAA Championship game and TEAM DIME ringleader MIKE BIBBY.

The whole tournament Bibby was rockin all the new kicks and just lighting the place up as a FRESHMAN. I mean Miles Simon did his thang and all with that lil cheap up and under pump fake all tournament but Bibby was pure ice cold GAME. He led them to defeat three number one seeds in one tournament on their way to the championship. (defeating a Kansas team that was 35-1 coming into the tourney)

The things that Bibby did nite in and out as a freshman at the tournament were unheard of...so the nite of the championship he breaks out the FOAMS and made em look just super sweet and they didn't even match the uniform...One of my boys, Marcel Harris, older brother played for that Arizona team. Donnell Harris a 6 "10 backup center who ended up getting kicked outta Arizona for dirty weed tests. At any rate Donnell's brother ended up with Mike Bibby's FOAMS after that game( he was somewhat of a PG prodigy back then before he went crazy) he was only a soph in high school but had verballed to Arizona already. But yeah man Bibby made those FOAMS official for @#%$ to have back in the day, and I remember looking at Marcel with em on and wondering how could I swindle those out of him. HA dude still has em. .

yeah i remember that nite and THOSE PARTICUALAR FOAMS VERY VIVIDLY.

MIKE BIBBY WAS KING OF SNEAKERHEADS FOR A NITE

I was a sophomore, and man I really wanted these! I saw the picture from Al Bundy Shoes on the net and Nike Playaz Online the other unsung heroes for Jordan-Bulls era Nike sites. It was like 180 at Footlocker, I asked everyone in my family to buy me or help me buy it. I ended up buying 2 OG's for nearly double each just a couple a years ago, so I'm sort of happy but nothing beats buying it when these dropped. Because people knew you had money, and would not give a rat what you buy...
