SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Violet Palmer will become coordinator of women's basketball officials for the West Coast Conference and continue to officiate inthe NBA, where she has worked for 12 seasons.

Earlier, The Associated Press incorrectly reported that Palmer would no longer officiate NBA games.

Palmer became the first woman to officiate a major U.S. professional sport when she made her NBA debut on Oct. 31, 1997. She has spent the last 12 seasonsin the NBA, and officiated four playoff games and more than 700 regular season games. She also worked in the CBA and WNBA.

Before working in pro basketball, Palmer spent nine seasons officiating in the women's college ranks. She worked five NCAA women's Final Fours, andofficiated in the West Coast Conference, Pac-10, WAC, Big Sky and Big West.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Does anyone else think the fact that being an NBA referee isn't a full time job is part of the problem?

They should have massive time commitments in the offseason dedicating to becoming better referees that prevent them from taking on jobs like this.

The fact that most of you don't even know who she is should be validation for her and her superiors that she's doing a great job. The fact thatshe's a woman makes it even morre impressive that most people don't even know who she is, because being a woman reffing a men's league, she alreadyhas a target on her back.

Yet if you ask most self-proclaimed NBA fans 'What do you think of Violet Palmer's contribution to NBA basketball?', they would have no clue whoyou were asking about?

"Yeah, but ska, most NBA fans don't even know who Joey Crawford is, and he's beyond terrible."

True (and true), but if you just give them a quick reminder like "He's that guy who kicked out Duncan while Duncan was laughing on the bench in theplayoffs a couple years ago" (or some similar story), they'd remember. "Now that you remember him, what do you think of Crawford'scontribution to NBA basketball?"

"Oh that dude? They need to get him in an NBA office somewhere or something, away from reffing the courts."

"Yeah, but ska, I'm sure if you gave people a reminder of some of Palmer's atrocious calls, like Crawford kicking out a laughing, seated Duncan, they'd remember her just the same."

Fair enough.

So name some of her 'terrible', 'trifling (words I've sseen to describe her in the thread) calls that have come to pass over the years.
