Sony Launches Female Superhero Movie Mining Spider-Man Universe

EXCLUSIVE: Having pushed the next installment of its Spider-Man franchise out of 2016 and into 2018, Sony Pictures is doing a top-to-bottom revamp of its most important property, insiders say. And that includes a female superhero movie which is being eyed for a 2017 release date, Deadline has learned.

Sinister Six, the next installment from writer-director Drew Goddard, was announced in April and its release date revealed during this year’s Comic-Con. It will bow November 11, 2016. The villain bash is the first of several planned character and story expansions for the Spider-Man franchise which the studio is hanging onto by developing other character spinoffs — much like Fox has done with its successful X-Men franchise. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing Sinister Six, which revolves around all the villains of Spider-Man converging after the evil Dr. Octopus summons them.

There are a lot of different Sinister Six team-ups so it has yet to be revealed which characters might appear, but one possibility is Vulture, Mysterio, Electro, Kraven the Hunter and Sandman. And Goddard is said to be a supreme comic book geek — not that there’s anything wrong with that — who truly understands all the aspects of the Spider-Man universe and its characters and storylines which is key for that movie and the next. “Having Goddard on board places the movie in the hands of someone who has lived in this world,” said one person who knowledge of the property. “If you look at Cabin In The Woods, he did such a phenomenal job on that in redefining and commenting on the genre while also completely embracing it. He’s a fanboy which compliments his talents as a filmmaker.”

After the villains emerge, get ready for the power of the women from the Spider-Man universe. Which characters they will develop is up for speculation, but we know that Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld) has been hired to script and that again Arad and Tolmach are producing. There are several strong possibilities — Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestarter and Spider-Woman, to name a few.

When Comic Book Resources took part in Paul Bettany's roundtable interview at last month's San Diego Comic-Con, the site quoted the British actor on more details about his role as The Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and how it evolves from voicing Tony Stark's artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. When asked if he'll miss the sassiness of voice character, Bettany replied, "I wouldn't say I missed it because I don't think that it entirely went away." He continued, "You'll see. And as he is born and becomes more realized, it's hard to be ironic when you're -- I know what you're talking about because there's a sort of irony and knowing with J.A.R.V.I.S., but it's hard to be -- I mean, babies aren't particularly ironic. But he's somebody who is learning about the world at quite an exponential rate, and he becomes more sassy as the movie continues." The actor was then asked how will Earth's mighties heroes feel having The Vision around, to which Bettany promises a crowd-pleasing scene in Age of Ultron. "Incredibly jealous!" he joked. "It's just been, like I said, a really lovely working experience. I think there's a lot of, initially in the plot, as it were, a lot of distrust, and that has to be navigated by The Vision, and he does it in a quite extraordinarily shocking way. He gains their trust in a real -- it will be -- it's a real roof-raiser of a moment. Everybody will flip."

Vision looks to me in that art concept pic but he does look like Iron Man in a different suit with a cape. He doesn't need that dumb big collar. Hope they ditch that too when Black Panther is introduced.

No he didn't. He just gave a roundabout answer and mentioned what's already in production as far as what they're working on now.

He's always kept it close to the vest in his interviews. He's semi-trolling everybody that's getting pretty insufferable about demanding a minority or female solo movie. I think it's part of the reason he released the long term movie date list without which movies attached.

I'm betting when it's official they'll be movies for 2016 and 2017 and he'll be like we BEEN had this planned. I aint just tell you.

Bottom line at this point, it's not about who does it first but who does it best. I'm not putting any faith in WB/DC, SONY, or FOX if they come out with a female or minority solo movie before Marvel.

Last month, the day after Marvel Studios revealed the first footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron among other things at San Diego Comic-Con, the annual Nerd HQ held its "Conversation with Joss Whedon" via FaceTime as the the writer-director was still recovering from knee surgery in London. The first of his few Marvel-related questions had inquired about how The Avengers sequel will address the Captain America: The Winter Soldier cliffhanger that left Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) on a mission to find Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). "Ultron is the clear present danger, and Bucky is in the wind," said Whedon. "We do mention the fact that [Bucky] is his sort of primary thing, but he's also working with the Avengers too. So, we're not ignoring it, but he definitely has to deal with a mad 8-foot robot. Because that's one of those things where, [if] you put it off, it just gets worse."

Speaking of Cap's primary mission, Captain America 3 is set a couple years after The Winter Soldier, and is also set to release the same day as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Which indirectly leads to Whedon's next Marvel-related question: What would he say to Warner Bros./DC to step up their game? "I don't think I would say that," he said moderately. "I think that would be a little presumptuous of me. I think that both studios have kind of different agendas, different ways of approaching the superhero genre, and the ethos of the thing, and the esthetic. They go very dark and serious and sometimes it works amazingly, and Marvel tends to be a little lighter. Both have movies that I adore, and both have movies that I'm like... [Whedon makes an irking gesture], including bits of my own. I would not want them to do what Marvel does. I like what they do when they get it right. When you get a Heath Ledger [performance], and Batman Begins, and those things that really grip you. That's something nobody else is doing, and I like it. I want them to do what they're doing."

The last Marvel question Joss Whedon was asked was about Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which Marvel Studios had just announced the day before the Nerd HQ panel, and how James Gunn's 2017 sequel will affect what he has going for The Avengers. "I was not aware of what they were going to announce," he admits, "because I sort of stay away from everything else as much as I can while I'm trying desperately to finish [Age of Ultron]. We're two weeks away from finishing and I'm two days away from actually finishing the script as well. So, it's a lot going on with me right now. Kevin [Feige] has a big plan and every now and then, he'll tell me part of it if he thinks it's going to affect what I'm doing or if he thinks what I'm doing is going to affect his. But as much as possible, I try to live in my own bubble. Guardians [of the Galaxy] is very much its own thing. They're not the Guardians of this galaxy; it's a different one. So, I can sort of keep them at arm's length, long enough to do my thing and then I'm sure everything is gonna get mixed together because it's Marvel."

Let's be honest here. Whedon is to Marvel what Nolan was to Warner. While I'm a fan of both studios, it's very evident who's doing it right.

Kudos to Feige and the Marvel team for executing on their vision correctly. I won't be surprised if they end up grabbing all of the up-and-coming Hollywood talent (read: they already have).

I'd say Hawkeye somehow fashions the gauntlet (doesn't even wear it) into an "infinity arrow", shooting it right at Thanos, but barley misses (300 style) leaving Thanos in disbelief that "even gods can bleed". Thus prompting Thanos to retreat...........

Evans stated before that cameos doesn't count (like the one he did for Thor 2) so I assume flashbacks doesn't either especially if they do not have to film new stuff for that flashback.

In the end, he might actually even stick with cap. In this interview he says he wants to direct other films outside of Marvel universe but wouldn't mind being in front of the screen for Marvel.

Oh yeah, this was a big thing! I gotta watch what I say. I will absolutely clarify. I have a six-movie contract with Marvel and I absolutely plan on fulfilling them. This is without a doubt the biggest blessing in my life. Marvel has literally changed the game for me, and they make great movies. I did direct last year and it was a really fantastic experience, I really enjoyed it. So I’m certainly looking to do that a bit more, so when it comes to exploring other acting jobs I may not be as proactive in trying to find those, I may kind of stick with my Marvel universe in terms of getting in front of the camera, and then getting behind the camera outside of it.
