Time and time again, my friends and I want to film shorts, parody's, etc, but have to rely on using a friend of ours camera, but he isn't reliable when we need to use it.

I'm looking to purchase a (handheld) video camera, preferably HD. I realize the more I spend, the better the camera will be, but for right now, I'm looking for something on the cheaper side that will get the job done.

Anyone care to chime in?

And that price range would be...?
Maybe $200-300? Seems very cheap, but there has to be something out there in that price range that I can get use of

Canon makes pretty good lenses.  If you're looking in that range, it might be good just to get a Powershot camera.  The quality of the pictures and video is pretty good for what you're paying.  The only downside is the form factor so if your videos are going to be pretty long, an actual camera might be better.  However, you're likely going to have to pay $500 for a decent quality one unless you want to go with a model from a year or two ago.
