Definitely thank you. You can show politeness without saying please. Much harder to do so without a thank you or thanks.

A good Thank you is appreciated. Especially if you hold a door open for someone, and if they don't, you know you feel like throwin something at their head.

thank you. People will do a lot of things to get what they want, saying please is one of them. A thank you shows appreciation even after they've gottenwhat they wanted.

being that it has to be incorporated into a statement, it's more of a hassle for someone to say. while thank you is a two word closer.
