Will Jerry Sloan ever win coach of the year?

How is it possible that a dude with this kind of coaching record has never won COTY?

Just 3 poor/mediocre seasons (01/02, 03/04, 05/06).

No one expected the Jazz to do anything this season and yet all Sloan has done is coach them to possibly a 2nd place finish in the West.

I don't think it's that crazy that he hasn't won it. First of all, the award is coach of the YEAR, not of the decade or of a career. Second, and more importantly, the coach of the year award often goes to a coach that defied expectations and won a lot of games with a mediocre lineup, or a lineup that had chemistry problems in the past (think OKC's coach this year or Dunleavy when he won it with the Blazers). Sloan coached two HOFers for most of his career, and recently has had two certified studs in DWill and Boozer. In the gap between Malone-Stockton and Williams-Boozer, his records were mediocre. Maybe his 41-41 season with that horrible squad was impressive, but you're not gonna win COTY without cracking .500.

I honestly believe that as good of a coach he is, he's the one holding the Jazz back from winning it all.

Agreed. We know how voters tend to vote. I mean, Phil Jackson only has one. Greg Popovich only has one.

He has one total losing season
