The Code Book by Simon Singh. It'll make you smarter guaranteed. The history and practice of codemaking and codebreaking. It covers ancient stuff, spy-typestuff from the world wars, e-mail and e-commerce encyrption...really entertaining and educational. I'm going to pick up his other books which are on theBig Bang and Fermat's Last Theorem.
