North Korea Launches Rocket; Japan Requests UN Security Council emergency session.

SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea has launched a long-range rocket, U.S. and South Korean officials confirmed to CNN on Sunday.

The payload of the rocket remains unclear. North Korea has said the rocket was to carry a satellite into space, but the United States, South Korea and othernations fear it could be a missile with a warhead attached.

Earlier Sunday, before the launch, South Korea's national security council called an emergency meeting amid concerns that a North Korean rocket launchwas imminent, a presidential spokesperson told CNN Sunday.

The rocket -- launched at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday (10:30 p.m. ET Saturday) -- was a "provocative act in violation" of U.N. Security Councilresolution on North Korea's weapons program, said Fred Lash, a State Department spokesman, told reporters.

A senior Obama administration official confirmed that the rocked did clear Japan.

On Friday, U.S. President Barack Obama reiterated that the United States strongly opposes any such launch.

"We have made it very clear to the North Koreans that their missile launch is provocative, it puts enormous strains on the Six Party talks and thatthey should stop the launch," Obama said while on a stop in France.

Obama warned that the United States will join with its allies to take "appropriate steps" to let North Korea know it can't violate UnitedNations rules and get away with it.

Western nations fear that North Korea plans a ballistic missile test rather than a satellite launch, but the administration's specialenvoy to the Six-Party Talks, Stephen Bosworth, said it didn't matter if the North Koreans were trying to put a satellite in space or testing a ballisticmissile that could threaten Japan or the United States.

But for a split second, I had doubt and thought, "Wait... is this bad...?"

So I decided to ask the good folks of NT.

North Korea has been steadfast in claiming that this is not a missile, but they are trying to further their peaceful space program. They say that its a testsatellite.

we'll see how it goes

They're doing it to showcase that they have the capability to make said weapons and in turn flex their muscle/sell them to potential buyers.

If this is a rocket and not a satellite, tensions are going to rise between N. Korea and other countries, the US included.

Well North Korea has stated that shooting down their "satellite" would be an act of war.

but seriously we should have much better intelligence, we should know if that rocket is carrying a satellite or a warhead.

we should have better intel , but north korea is a whole different ball game. I think i saw something on fox news saying that they could attack japan, taiwanand there rocket capabilities could reach alaska as well. Someone confirm?

North Korea isnt stupid enough to attack a US territory or a US state. That would spell the end for their government & all of their military aims. Not tomention there would be considerable action from other countries...

im not saying that they would do that, im saying they have capabilities. Other countries have stated that North Korea shouldnt fire any type of rockets. So ithink they wanna do there own thing.

We've been eyeing this missile launch, trust, if it were that much of a threat to the United States, one of our"floating sovereigns" would've deployed countermeasures.

They are launching this rocket to test if it can fly as far as they want it to.......not to start/improve their space program.

They launched the same model of rocket a few years back but it exploded about 2 min into flight. This is their second attempt.
