22 years old. Center fielder. Lead-off hitter extraordinaire. The future of the Pittsburgh Pirates (until they trade him in three years or so).

4-6 tonight with 2 triples, 1 double, 2 runs and 1 run batted in. The game in still going, tied in the 11th. The double he just hit might have knocked in thegame-winning run if Craig Monroe didn't get thrown out at the dish.

(Almost) five games in the Majors: .417 (10-24)/.440/.625, 5 runs, 5 runs batted in and 1 stolen base.

* = Nate is still my boy.

I just saw his line and knew either a new post would pop up or the trade deadline post would be page 1

Even though I could care less about the Pirates, I hope they can keep this guy around and build a competitive team in the near future. It's tough for me tosee baseball franchises struggle for so long for some reason...Don't know why.

at Baseball Tonight timing him vs. Freddy Sanchez on their triples

I saw this kid in person last year in the minors. Up close he doesnt look that fast, but the dude can FLYYYYYY.

Hey now.

Craftsy, wipe those tears, man; losing Nate isn't all bad.

By the time McCutchen gets shipped, maybe Jose Tabata will be ready to step in.

i just don't get why we couldn't keep both of them.. Nate could've easily been moved to left or right, not like we've got a ton ofoutfield talent. But they had to dump 10 million to be able to draft a few decent players apparently.

The kid they're supposed to sign out of Latin America is a STUD... Miguel Sano or whatever his name is... Scouting reports I've read onhim are crazy...

But yeah, they better take that $$$ and invest it into the draft...

Yes, sir. They're talking about potential record-setting bonus money for him.

Only one strikeout, though.

Edit: My bad. Three after tonight. Still, I'll take that in 26 plate appearances for his first time in the Majors.

90 pitches/26 plate appearances = 3.2 pitches per at-bat.

He has only swung at pitch outside the strike zone 11% of the time.

(Thats BJ Upton type numbers)

He's not hacking, he is swinging at good pitches.

He won't keep that up but he has always had good plate discipline.

I'm not getting too excited yet - there's no solid book on him yet, talk to me in 2 months and we'll see where he's at. Hopefully he proves myskepticism wrong, but I've seen enough of these "prospects" as a Pirates fan to know that how you start is almost never how you finish.

He's legitimate. No doubt about it.

I think Carl Crawford-type numbers in his prime would be a fair comparison, except less stolen bases (30s, maybe 40s, instead of 50s), more walks (10-20 more)and less strikeouts (10-20 less).

26 of his 29 at-bats have come against righties (he is right-handed) and he is 11-26 with all five of his runs batted in (0-3 against lefties).

Andrew McCutchen is just the third active player to have three three-hit games in the first five games of his career. The others are Coco Crisp and Jay Bruce.
