Any Teachers on NT?

I might get some hate for this, but whatever....ALL CREDENTIAL PROGRAMS ARE THE SAME, and by that I mean, they are worthless...I know other teachers who havebeen from State programs to the cal's of the world, and they all tell me the same thing....the problem with school of ed is that are taught by people whohave a misguided idea of what education is about. They believe that education for students should be a vehicle for a middle class lifestyle, and not for anysocietal change, which is a shame since in many urban cities throughout the country, public schools have been abandoned and left for those who come from thelower end of the socioeconomic ladder.
2, most of the professors you will encounter have not taught for yearssssssssssssss, some decades, and have no true sense of what happens in the classroom. They can tell you the Erikson's stages of development, but can't give you insight on how to handle a student who comes to your class high or drunk, aside from calling the office....I could go on and on

and I dont want to hate Ikari XD or call you out XD, but what experiences do you have and bring to the table that would compel you to get your masters too atthe same time? This is just me but get your credentials, teach, and then get masters....I saw too many people do this in my program who had no idea what wentdown in the classroom.

Word of advice to history teachers....it is HARD to find a position, at least here in SF....next year, I'm off to oakland

Nah but really.... I thought about being a teacher because one of the greatest influences in my life was a teacher.

But.... I don't think I'd enjoy it enough.

I agree with the statement about get ur credentials..then teach..and then do ur masters..it's all about gettin experience first in a schooldistrict that is the only way you learn how to become an effective teacher..i am glad i am gettin the experience i am right now because it's gonna help mebecome better in the future..and i just started my masters..

I'm doin my masters now in Special education because that is where all the jobs are because so many students are now classified as "learningdisabled" which is another story that i won't get into..

This is from my sole year of teaching

I never had any favorite students or students I disliked....like someone said, there are students who are annoying and get under your skin, but it comes withthe job. You're never going to be everyone's favorite teacher, but all that really matters is that they are learning.
I will say that I always went out of my way to connect with the "bad" students....it's easy to get along with the A+, never talks in class andalways turns the work on time student, but where is the challenge in that? I had a 12th grader in particular who worried me the most, had numerousparent-teacher talks about staying on track to graduate, had numerous convos to motivate and help him out, and who I probably owe a lot of my newly formedwhite hairs too....but man, seeing him walk on stage was priceless

I don't remember if I mentioned this or not, but I rock sneakers everyday. the funniest #%$# is, you know my school is madd poor when I strictly rock 3pair of beaters and the kids are all "why do you wear so many shoes!?!?"

7th Grade Math 2nd year. Going great this year much easier than the first.

I wear Jordans and stuff on Fridays or days that we have basketball practice. Kids always ask how many shoes you got? my answer is too many.

I don't hate any student there are some that get annoying but I try to find different ways to reach them.

What do y'all teachers do when it comes to that?

lmao that is what I do... I'm a physical ed/health/drivers ed teacher at a high school. It's my first year and has been good so far.

Whats good with kids not getting a recess anymore though? Cutting arts & crafts, music? Seems like we are promoting a sedentary lifestyle, and stiffingcreativity.

Whats good with y'all not making bank? You guys have the very important task of shaping the minds of tomorrow. How do you feel about that?

Whats good with teaching curriculum that you don't agree with/know isn't accurate? Is there a strict course outline that you have to adhere to?

My wife is a teacher and so are other family members. My wife teaches in a "poor" area where a few of her kids are in shelter homes and others arefrom broken families. She says its very challenging but also very rewarding. I was planning to teach two years ago but i had some other opportunities. Now iwill sub soon and then apply for a job. Looking to be a kinder teacher or something else in early childhood.

I definitely understand where you're coming from, and I've actually had this conversation before. If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that there really isn't a point in jumping right in fort the masters when all the masters really teaches you is education theory, and itis essentially worthless without first having practical hands-on experience first? Correct me if I'm wrong...since the next bit I'm going to type outwill be worthless if I am
laugh.gif

The first reason for me taking this masters+credential program is because I'm not too keen on taking a 3 semester credential program (like the one SFSUoffers and is supposedly really solid) if I have the opportunity to take a 4 semester masters+credential program at USF (which I've had former teacherswhom I respect recommend to me in the past). MAT@USC is also another convenient route that I decided not to pursue (even though the credential program seems totake a year-year 1/2) because of the relative closeness to the length of time the program at USF would take.

The second reason for me would be that I would like to understand contemporary educational theory before stepping into the classroom. Like I said, I've hadthe discussion before with current teachers who've told me a lot about the changing world of educational theory, but I don't really see it as adeterrant in leaning about the theory before actually having the experience. The way I see it (or at least, would like to see it) is that having thisbackground of educational theory would just give me another tool in trying to decipher situations in a classroom setting.

To branch off from that second reason, I've had some experience (albeit minimal of course) with running a classroom and seeing how to effectively educatestudents while maintaining a solid learning environment. My "mentor" often walked me through the reasoning behind why she does certain things in theclassroom so I would have a better idea of how a teacher operates. She now has a great position at Los Gatos (or Los Altos) High, and every student at my oldschool loved her, so I'm hoping I'll be able to emulate her style.

Sorry for jumping into essay mode, and I definitely do understand your concerns and criticisms, but I feel like this is the best path of action for me (asopposed to jumping directly into the classroom as a 22 year old) at this point of my life. I feel like it may be a disservice to jump in fresh-faced andenthusiastic, but possibly lacking the skills necessary to really nurture the minds of my students. I'm hoping by the time I'm 24 and have mystudent-teaching and educational theory background under my belt, I'll be a much better educator, and a more mature and controlled person.

I'd be geeked to get into one of these fellowships and be teaching hs english...

I will relish in being the cool teacher.

yall got any crazy stories?

I got a couple...

kids run up to me on the playground like "come quick, there was a fight"

usually, its tame, so I walk over to a kid sitting slouched on the ground

I'm like "what happend?" a different kid comes up, and says, "_______ high kicked him in the head, then spin kicked him in the stomach"

I swear I was holding back laughter, not only because of the random 3rd grader's precise account, but also cause dude who got got is the "littletoughguy" at school...walking around mean mugging with fists clinched....(funny, later that week his parents were up at the school all, 'did yew seethe fight?' 'No, but I was on duty, and yes, your son was fighting. the boy who hit him was disciplined." "well, imma call the schoolboard" "okay, lady....")

or what about the pre-k kid who crapped his pants, and instead of going to the office, 2 doors down, walked around the entire school dropping logsout...minutes before lunch/recess...

and the last?

me, 2 other teachers, and a parent run an intramural basketball leauge in our own time for the kids, only elementary school in the city, but we were goingthrough layup drills...so I was under the basket, "coaching" them on layups while they ran a layup line

this kid with a mohawk who always got mouth goes up, then, as he's jogging back, says something to the effect of "see, that's why you wasscared" right? the parent coach gives me a funny look like "is he serious?"

so I continue coaching and whatnot, like nothing happend...when he went up, swear, I hit him with a technically sound volleyball spike into the wall, inchesfrom old woman and toddler

the parent was like "I KNEW YOU WERE GONNA DO THAT!"

lol

just a few....

They're some bad ones but the good ones that don't give up and look like theyactually want to be there. For those who actually teach and sub whats the best subject to teach, i was thinking PE/Coach or math

Actually thinking about becoming a teacher, applying to university this year so we'll see how it goes didn't know there were so many teachers on NT

That's because in public schools, with the NCLB act, students are drilled to take tests-there isn't any time forthe "extra" stuff. My case is different-my kids get recess everyday (unless there is inclement weather of course), have P.E. 2x a week for 45 min,Art once a week-next quarter it will be Music. I also teach social studies and science EVERYDAY-opposed to once a week, which is the norm in most (not all)public schools.

Being a private school teacher, I am extremely underpaid. I make half of what a public school teacher makes, but at this point in my life I can afford to takethe pay cut. Plus I didn't go in it for the money, I LOVE going in to work everyday.

Public schools are mandated by the state. They have certain guidelines and benchmarks they must meet. In my case, I am free to adjust the curriculum to myclassroom's unique needs. We do test in the spring, but it is not something stressed over all year long. Most Charter schools also don't have to followa state's mandate as well.

serious question, if your a HS teacher or college teacher do you ever fantasize about smashing one of your students? yeah im talking to you ms. Wike!
