So the regular season until All-Star break, he wore the Fire Red's with 3M tongue and NO 23? And then after All-Star break it went to Black Tongue and the 23? Is this correct?
89-90  Fire red IVs until all-star break, wht/black midsole-red (3M tongue) Vs for the rest of the season, blk/silver Vs for the playoffs

90-91 Wore White/Fire Red (black tongue)V's thru All Star Break. Wore Black/Infrared VI's in ASG. Finished regular season wearing White/infared VI's. Black/infrared VI's in the Post Season.

Since day 1 on Niketalk, I don't think anyone has a pic of MJ wearing the black/red I's in a game. Does this still hold true?

The "Banned" shoes were the black/red air ships. I know there have been black and white photos of this.

Can anyone prove MJ wore black/red I's in a game and not just all star game festivities?

^^
Maybe that's the reason the Banned 1's were rejected & hit the outlets because they made a mistake & noticed it a little late also.

It's because he never did...The shoes were banned on October 18th, 1984 and MJ's first game was on October 26th, 1984 againts the Bullets...It was the Black / Red "Air Ships" that got banned...

Actually If you want to break it down it wasn't even a particular model that got banned but the colorway (~Black / Red~)...

Whole thing was a marketing ploy by Nike / NBA...Nike gets wide spread appeal through advertising...NBA gets wide spread exposure due to Nikes Commercials and media reports...Jordan sets along the path to become anchor ambassador for both...It's a win win for all parties involved...

I have some pics and info saved on my PC regarding the whole thing...I'll track them down and post them up...Whole thing is comedy to me...

^^ that would be awesome if you could post it up. I've always been very interested in the whole situation. Lol

Here is what I have saved on my PC...There is a ton more info though that goes more into detail...I think there was a thread someplace in there that covered this topic a few years back but I cant seem to find it...Anyway here is what I've got...

The shoes were apparently banned on October 18, 1984 as stated in this letter from then NBA Executive Vice President Russell Granik to the then Nike VP Rob Strasser...Self explanitory really but notice it doesen't define the model of shoe only saying "red and black NIKE basketball shoes"...

Since MJ's first official game was against the Washington Bullets on October 26, 1984 it's obvious that the shoe ban came down during the preseason...That schedule looked like this...

10/5 Bulls 102, Ind 98 @ Peoria
10/7 Bulls 107, KC 100 @ St. Louis
10/9 Bulls 100, Mil 97 @ E Chcago
10/13 Bucks 99, Bulls 84 @ Milw
10/15 Bulls 91, NY 90 @ Glens Falls
10/18 Bulls 112, NY 93 @ NY
10/19 Kings 103, Bulls 89 @ Chicago

That being said there are only a handful of published photos taken of MJ during his first preseason in the NBA...These are the ones that are most widely circulated...The Indiana Pacers pictures are from his actual first NBA game on October 5, 1984...Notice on his feet are a pair of white / red Air Ship's...Apparently he wore the air ships more through the 1984 85' season as this picture also has him laceed during a game with the Suns...

Now going by that list above we can all assume that since the Bulls played the Knicks on October 18, 1984 then that's where the shoe ban took place correct...Well not really...Video of the game shows him wearing a pair of mostly white sneakers with red around the ankle...Can't 100% say it's the ships but it's looks almost certain...What we can say though is that they were not a pair of "red and black NIKE basketball shoes"...

But hold on...The Bulls also matched up against the Knicks on October, 15 1984 and when you track down a picture of that game...Well see for yourself's...

Clearly not Jordan 1's...Best guesses are the Air Ships which are the leading candidates or the Air Train II's...

It's fairly obvious that the Jordan 1's weren't banned but rather the colorway...Marketing at it's finest...I also have an article saved someplace from around 1985 where they confirm that Nike paid all the fines that the NBA threw at MJ for the shoes and the funds were donated to a Chicago Area charity jointly by the NBA and Nike...I'll see if I can track it down...

^ Repped. :smokin

Posts like this about the history of the "Banned" 1s always tickle my interest. Those black/red Air Ships are dope imo.

Nike's marketing machine is pure genius.

so i know jordan had the 23 pe with the fire red black midsoles but did he have a 23 pe and no 23 with the metallic 5s? i cant tell if the time he wore the white laces were 23 or not

Also continuing from my earlier post's...

It's also a little known fact that MJ prefered mid's and lows during his playing days...This is why some of the AJ1's (Dunk soles ~ Jordan II soles etc...) are clrearly a lower mid cut than the general release pairs...This is why you see him kind of transition into the low top Jordan II's...

Gathering the pics now...

I just find it funny because it seems that high top Jordan 1's are clearly the front runner as far as sneakerheads are concerned...Though the man himself didn't like shoes that were cut too high...

Notice the lower height of these in comparison to the OG 1's...

Low's of course...

All of MJ's shoes from this point on were essentially mid tops and of course he occasionally wore a pair of lows for certain models (XI's, XIII's)...

Hey, I'm searching far & wide with no luck... does anyone have pics from one of MJ's final games as a Wizard either in NY or (Boston maybe?) where he rocked either an OG or '94 retro pair of AJ1s, apparently for the first half & they were about a full size too small, he went on to say in an interview, so he took them off at the half?  I've never seen pics of them & am curious which ones they are & what the release year was... maybe they were even '01 Royals?? Not sure...

Thanks for the assist if you have a pic or 3 to share!

EDIT: Nevermind...I had my facts a bit off... the story surround his last game as a BULL, playing at MSG. He rocked an OG Pair of "Chicago" 1s...not even the '94 retro! Up until that point in time, MJ had never worn a retro once on court, despite the '94s that released, apparently.

Found the story with LOADS of sick pics, here:

THAT's what I was looking for
