BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling called on Roger Clemens to give up the four Cy Young Awards he's won since 1997 if he can't clear his name from allegations that he used steroids to prolong and enhance his career.

"If he doesn't do that then there aren't many options as a fan for me other than to believe his career 192 wins and three Cy Youngs he won prior to 1997 were the end," Schilling wrote Wednesday in his blog, 38pitches.com. "From that point on the numbers were attained through using [performance-enhancing drugs]. Just like I stated about Jose [Canseco], if that is the case with Roger, the four Cy Youngs should go to the rightful winners, and the numbers should go away if he cannot refute the accusations."

Schilling noted in the 3,200-word posting that he was a fan of the seven-time Cy Young winner who owed much of his success to a stern talking-to he received from Clemens when Schilling was a prospect in the Boston system.

"His 'undressing' of me and lecture were a major turning point," Schilling said. "I've always respected his career accomplishments and regarded him as the greatest pitcher to ever play the game."

But, having called on Canseco to give up his 1988 AL MVP award, and noting also the unrefuted evidence against Barry Bonds, Schilling acknowledged he could not avoid questioning Clemens' accomplishments, as well.

--Curt Schilling

"Can you separate what Barry is accused of from what Roger is accused of?" Schilling said. "If ... both of these men end up being caught, what does that say about this game, us as athletes and the future of the sport and our place in it? The greatest pitcher and greatest hitter of all time are currently both being implicated, one is being prosecuted, for events surrounding and involving the use of performance enhancing drugs. That [stinks]. ... The sport needs fixing."

Clemens was the biggest name in the report by former Senate majority leader George Mitchell that detailed the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. Clemens has denied using performance-enhancing substances.

The Rocket's last four Cy Young Awards came in 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2004. Many of the allegations against Clemens in the Mitchell Report came from former trainer Brian McNamee, though none pertain to 1997 or 2004. Mitchell wrote McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998 while with the Toronto Blue Jays, and steroids and human growth hormone in 2000 and 2001, while with the New York Yankees.

Schilling commended those who've apologized for using performance-enhancing drugs and called on everyone accused to prove their innocence or apologize for their mistakes.

"The world is full of good to great people that have made mistakes of this magnitude or worse," Schilling wrote. "These guys made mistakes, and I do mean mistakes. They didn't accidentally do this, this was a conscious decision with far reaching implications and they should be held accountable."

While saying Canseco's "entire career, all of it, is a sham" and saying "he was never in his life a major league player," Schilling also acknowledged that many of Canseco's claims about other steroid users have been corroborated.

"He has broken the flood gates on a topic that went unspoken on for far too long," Schilling said.

The runners-up in Clemens' last four Cy Young-winning years were Randy Johnson (1997 and 2004), Pedro Martinez (1998) and Mark Mulder (2001).

Schilling was among those who testified in March 2005 to a U.S. House committee investigating steroids, along with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmiero. The same committee has scheduled hearings for Jan. 15.

Clemens has not been asked to attend, though it's possible that the committee could decide to ask Clemens or other players to appear that day -- or at a future hearing, if there is one.

I know he's done it his damn self.

Im mad he wasn't on the report.

I agree though that it's a little pathetic that two of the greatest baseball players of our era have been linked (strongly) to steroid/HGH use. And both ofthem are d-heads.

Curt use roids?
roll.gif
, you're letting you're hate blind you. He has always been a fat sloppy bastard. Saying Schilling used the juice is like sayingJohn Kruk did

i like Curt Schilling. MLB needs more "clean" guys to step up and speak on this. if you don't have guys like Schilling, who openly express theirdisdain for 'roid users, than it almost makes it seems like there's a general consensus amoungst the players that its OK.

Curt Shillings must have watched a lot of Scooby Doo as a kid because he's always meddling in other peoples' business...

Schilling's an arrogant & self-involved %+!%@@%@*, but he's absolutely correct. He's saying what a lot of people feel. He's still a douchethough no matter what.

seriously though it seems like he's always got something to say about everything that comes up in baseball

Schilling's appears to be very self absorbed, but that's it. He's simply saying things that mostly everyone else thinks. Plus, Schilling certainlyhas gained the credibility to speak his mind on certain things, especially things of this magnitude. So bravo to Schilling, and I actually agree with hissentiments.

I don't have a problem when an analyst or a broadcaster or anyone else from the media bashes the players about steroid use. But this one bothers me becauseit's a player to player insult. They don't work or play for the same organization but aren't they both under the players union? It's as if thisdude Schilling is badmouthing his coworkers in front of the whole world. Anyway, while we're at it, why doesn't someone do an investigation aboutSchilling and his "bloody ankle red sock" performance back in the '04 playoffs. I mean, back then it was a story of guts and courage, nowit's pretty suspicious to me...

yeah curts the man. being from the boston area he is always on the sports talk shows. has something to say about everything. funny thing is he may be runningfor state senator in mass rumor has it.

He's basically stating what I said before. If they strip Marion Jones of her medals for steroid use, they might as well strip Clemens of his"personal" awards, because thats all you can pretty much do (you can't take away World Series rings*).

If you're gonna strip players of personal awards, why not world series rings? Cheating is cheating. Why isn't Schilling running his mouth aboutBrian Roberts, who helped his red sox win in 2004. Why doesn't he offer to give back his world series ring since he had a player cheating for them.Schilling's not a dumb guy but he runs his mouth way too much to the point where he's way too hypocritical.

Atleast someone in baseball has the testicles to say something, yall just hating

Pretty much.

I personally like when athletes go out of the box and call each other out when needed, there's too much union hand holding and "boy he's such agreat player" quotes from everyone all the time that this at least makes it interesting even if it is coming from blowhorn Schill

On a side not I still cannot believe McGwire and Sosa got off scot free on this report. Just goes to show if you use the right people you can stay under cover.I'm also surprised we've heard basically no reaction to Matt Williams, Juan Gonzalez and Mo Vaughn being ON the list. I realize they arent playing anylonger (And Gonzo most of us figured already) but it's funny how the media has brushed them to the side - those guys put some nice numbers up in theircareers. But they didnt play for the Yankees so I guess the media shouldnt care.

It has nothing to do with Clemens being a Yankee. It has to do with Clemens being a person that is very easy to dislike, word to Barry Bonds.

Schilling is mad cuz he wasn't winning no Cy youngs. Am I the only one that noticed the Miller report was written by a person with strong ties to the RedSox organization and the there are no Red Sox on the list and at least 15 yankeess or ex yankees? The only exception being Clemens but the report said he usedsteroids AFTER he left the Red SoX

Good job Curt...he told the truth...some other times he could shut the !%%! up, but this time he right. He should have to give back his Cy Youngs/haveasterisks placed next 2 his records if he got a competitive edge from performance enhancers.

(Side Note: Is Curt Schilling the Jeremy Roenick of baseball?)

GIVE BACK THE CY YOUNGS!? So that means were gonna take every award from every person on the list? Or just Clemens because he was the best?

^ no way. eric gagne got nailed and we all know how much he contributed to our world series title this past year...oh yeah thats right

For people who dont read SG on espn.com:
"Remember when we spent hours analyzing that clip from the 2000 World Series and wondering why Clemens would ever grab the broken handle of MikePiazza's bat, then angrily whip it at him for no sane reason? 'Roid rage, baby! The riddle has been solved! It's like seeing video of a secondshooter in the grassy knoll in Dallas."
