OP, im a FF/EMT for Orange County (FL) FD.... in Orlando, FL.
i had to take a pre-requisite EMT class, followed by Fire Standards course.... after being certified i test about 15 different departments before finally getting hired. just stay on your grind applying and testing, its difficult to get hired on, but many people give up....

and i LOVE it.... couldnt think of a better job, ill never be rich but the job is incredible.....

I too am an inspiring FF, as of now, I'm taking my FF classes at a community college as well, and next semester I plan on taking EMT classes so I can start looking for part time work.  After I'm done with all credits and get my FF 1 certificate, I plan on transferring to csu LA to get my bachelors in Fire Protection Admin. Technology.

Competition here in the bay is really tough, esp if you dont have anyone in the service.  You have to do whatever you can to get your name out there and make you better than anyone else.  I also plan on trying to volunteer for CAL-Fire next year.

My brother recently just got accepted for LAPD, so hopefully that might give help during recruiting

i dont have a degree.
Just EMT certified (State and National) and FF certified....
having a degree is never a bad thing and looks better on an application than not having one.

my aunt is a 911 dispatcher, so she tried her best pulling strings, but it still took 1.5 years after i graduated...

i just finished up my Probie year, couldnt be happier.... seen some wild stuff, had some awesome fire... and partied alot on my days off.

when you get on, just make sure when you talk to girls the go to line is "So what do you do....?"
they tell you some nonsense that you dont listen to, and then they ask you what you do. game. set. match.
