After firing defensive coordinator Nick Holt, linebackers coach Mike Cox and safeties coach Jeff Mills, the Huskies have just one returning defensive coach, line coach Johnny Nansen. Cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin already had left to take a job at UCLA.

Pac-12 picks ... including the Washington game NEW - 12/31, 12:35 PM

A year and a day after his greatest moment as Washington's defensive coordinator, Nick Holt was fired Saturday.

Holt was let go along with linebackers coach Mike Cox and safeties coach Jeff Mills as the Huskies decided to remake the coaching staff of a defense that ranked as the worst in school history, capped by a disastrous showing in a 67-56 loss to Baylor in the Alamo Bowl on Thursday.

With cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin having already left to take a similar job at UCLA, UW is now searching for four new defensive assistants. The only one remaining is defensive line coach Johnny Nansen, who also serves as recruiting coordinator and special teams coach.

The school made the announcement in a news release early Saturday.

Coach Steve Sarkisian said in the release the fired coaches "were instrumental in the leadership and development of countless young men, and they have left our program in a better place. I am grateful for their service to our program and to the University of Washington and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors."

The school said Sarkisian would have no further comment until an end-of-season news conference in a few weeks. The statement said a national search for replacements for all the coaches would begin immediately.

The key hire will be finding a successor for Holt, who came to UW amid much fanfare in 2009 after having been the defensive coordinator at USC under Pete Carroll, now the Seahawks coach. Holt worked with Sarkisian on Carroll's staff.

Sarkisian was the offensive coordinator at USC and works primarily with the offense at UW and hired Holt to oversee the defense, luring him with a hefty contract that paid him $650,004 this season as well as the additional title of assistant head coach.

Holt's intense demeanor — accentuated by his bald head and seemingly ever-present snarl on the practice field — made him an initial hit with fans.

And the UW defense showed signs of promise in Holt's first two seasons, highlighted by a 19-7 victory over Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30, 2010, a game in which the Huskies held the Cornhuskers to 189 yards.

But such performances were an anomaly, and Holt could not build on the Holiday Bowl success this season. Washington's 2011 defense was the worst in school history in yards allowed per game (453.3), passing yards allowed per game (284.6) and total points (467).

Washington also allowed the second-most points in a game in its history (67 against Baylor) and the most yards (777 against Baylor), and was torched for 65 points and 615 yards by Stanford.

The Huskies' defense ranked No. 94 nationally before bowl games.

Holt and Sarkisian often pointed to the youth of this year's defense, which generally started just four seniors, as an explanation. In particular, the defense couldn't replace the playmaking abilities of linebackers Mason Foster and Victor Aiyewa, stalwarts of the 2010 team

But after the Alamo Bowl, Sarkisian said every aspect of the program would be re-evaluated.

"It's obvious we need to improve," Sarkisian said. "We need to get better on the defensive side of the ball, and it'll be addressed and addressed as quickly as possible."

There were rumors on Friday that Holt would be fired, including a report by FootballScoop.com.

Holt, in a brief interview with The Seattle Times on Friday, said he expected to be back.

But the Huskies made the announcement of his firing, and that of Mills and Cox, on Saturday morning.

Holt did not respond to messages left by The Times, but told KJR-AM that "obviously the whole year was kind of a tough year" and that he would now begin trying to get a new job.

Sarkisian has long touted the value of continuity in his coaching staff. Martin's departure was the first for the nine-man assistant staff that was put together before the 2009 season.

Sarkisian had helped facilitate new contracts for all of his assistants following the success of the 2010 season and each had a deal through at least the 2012 season.

Holt's salary at UW was $650,004, Cox's was $220,008 and Mills' was $155,004, and under the terms of their original contracts, each is scheduled to receive that salary in a lump-sum payment within 30 days of termination.

Washington felt it a necessary price to pay to shore up its defense.

Led by an explosive offense powered by sophomore quarterback Keith Price — a surprise in the quick transition he made replacing Jake Locker — UW began the season 6-2. But the Huskies lost four of their final five, giving up 34 or more points in each loss, the offense unable to keep up with the rapid pace of scoring by opponents.

The Alamo Bowl loss left Sarkisian's record at 19-19 entering his fourth year at UW, which will be a transitional year for the program as the Huskies will play at CenturyLink Field while Husky Stadium undergoes a $250 million renovation.

Roughly $200 million of that will be paid off in revenues generated by the new stadium, so the Huskies will need to reignite the enthusiasm of the fan base in 2012 before they head into the new stadium, and will need to do so against another tough schedule that includes a nonconference game at LSU, and five road conference games, including a trip to Pac-12 champ Oregon, as well as home contests against USC and Stanford.

Mills is a former quarterback and outside linebacker at Western Washington who was a graduate assistant at Washington in 1990-91.

Like Holt and Mills, Cox also worked at Idaho, among several other stops, before coming to UW.

My cousin who goes to a lot of huskie games says they are renovating Huskie stadium. Any pics of what it's gonna look like?

Biggest thing I think most people are excited about is there won't be anymore track around the field bringing the crowd closer to the action. It's gonna have a real Qwest/Century Link type atmosphere.

Im going need Polk to stay another year and get that #1 spot on the rushing list

I have no idea what kind of connections Sark will rely on to get a D-Coordinator. I'll be interested to see the route he goes.
First day practice notes and video
Posted by Bob Condotta

The Huskies are off the field following their first practice of the 2012 season.

It was a roughly two hour, 15-minute workout in a blazing sun on the East practice field, and as is required on the first day, shirts, shorts and helmets.

That doesn't mean it wasn't a little physical, as the coaches a few times had to remind players about making sure they didn't overstep the no-contact practice boundaries.

"Oh these guys, man they have been like some dogs tied up on the porch and we finally took the leashes off and they are going and they want to go and I love that about them,'' said UW coach Steve Sarkisian. "We just have to learn how to practice when we are not in pads. So it's great that we had a couple of examples to show them and we will show it to them again tonight on film and we just need everybody to learn that so it doesn't repeatedly happen.''

There was also what looked like a potentially scary moment for the Huskies when starting OL Erik Kohler --- who spent much of the day playing center --- screamed in pain and grabbed his right knee during a one-on-one drill while he was battling Danny Shelton. Sarkisian, though, said Kohler merely had his kneecap pop out and back in and should only be out a couple of days. S Sean Parker also left the field before practice ended due to dehydration. Otherwise, no apparent new injuries.

A few guys returned to practice for the first time in a while, notably RB Deontae Cooper, out since Aug., 2010 with two ACL injuries to his left knee. Cooper got out there for a little early work though he did not take part in any team sessions as the team eases him back. The same was true of players such as WR Kevin Smith, DE Hau'oli Jamora and OL Colin Tanigawa, who all were back but limited.

"We want to do enough to get their confidence but not go too far,'' Sarkisian said. "So it's going to be a gradual process, but I was pleased with that.''

Sarkisian's overall assessment of the first day? "I thought it was a really competitive practice. I thought we saw the playmaking ability of some of the guys on this team, some guys making plays down the field in the pass game and then some guys making plays for the defense with some turnovers, which is encouraging. From an overall efficiency standpoint of practice I thought it was really good for us to manage one field and to get a lot of work done with a lot of football players at one time I was pleased with.''

As the coach noted, there were a handful of turnovers. Those included an interception by true freshman safety Shaq Thompson, who stepped in front of a Derrick Brown slant pass intended for Jamaal Jones.

Asked about Thompson's play today, Sarkisian said: "First day, you know? I think he is like a lot of our young kids where they have moments where they do some really cool stuff like Shaq did and then there are moments where they would like to have some plays back. But I think we saw Jaydon Mickens do some things, saw Kendyl Taylor do some stuff today, Erich Wilson had a couple runs in there. Pleased with a lot of the young guys and Shaq had his moments, which were good.''

A few other turnovers included a John Timu interception of a Keith Price pass that went in and out of the hands of James Johnson; a Josh Shirley return of a fumble by Jesse Callier; a Tre Watson force of a fumble by Austin Seferian-Jenkins; and a Watson interception of a Brown pass.

The offense, though, had its moments. The play of the day might have been a Price pass to Cody Bruns on a flag route just over the arms of Parker for a long gain. Taylor also had several good catches.

The lineups had their expected shuffling, though no real surprises when it looked like the first units were out there. The first team defense was pretty much as it ended the spring, with Talia Crichton and Shirley at the ends and Andrew Hudson and Shelton at tackles; Timu, Nate Fellner and Princeton Fuiamono at linebacker; Justin Glenn and Parker at safety and Desmond Trufant and Greg Ducre at cornerback.

The No. 1 offensive line early on went, left to right, Drew Schaefer, Dexter Charles, Kohler, James Atoe and Ben Riva. After Kohler went down it was Micah Hatchie, Charles, Schaefer, Atoe and Riva.

Of the new offensive linemen, Shane Brostek seemed to be getting the most work with the second team at right guard.

There was also some kicking, and it's not always easy to tell who is who with Travis ***** and Korey Durkee each wearing No. 46. Each got seven attempts and ***** was 4-7 and Durkee 7-7, according to what it looked like from where we were. Sarkisian noted that there were some timing issues for both.

Thanks. :smokin

Sounds like the defense did well. Even for the first day of camp, I'll take it.

I heard that Price has beefed up to 202. That can only help.

[article=""]
Deontae Cooper Update from Coach Sark
08/09/12By Think Tank Productions

“I am saddened and dismayed to report that Deontae Cooper has torn the ACL in his right knee while participating in a non-contact drill during practice. Deontae has done everything we have asked of him, and has been an example to his teammates with his hard work in the classroom, and the dedication he showed in returning from two previous ACL surgeries in his left knee. Our football program will do everything we can to support him in this tough time.” -Coach Sark

3 times in 3 years. Damn |I

sad. i remember going to summer practices 3 years ago when he and Callier were true Freshman. He was, in my opinion, easily the 2nd most explosive offensive player on the team at that time; polk #1, Locker #3 (Jake had slimmed down that Sr. year and Sark had him in the pocket more).

I'm most excited about watching the young corners, Marcus Peters & Brandon Beaver, this summer.

WOW @ Cooper that's unreal. Don't really like Callier as the starter...... hopefully Sankey can step up.

Sad that I'm not getting season tickets that trip to C-Link would be too much of a hassle each week. Very excited for the new stadium though looks incredible! Will for sure be getting season tickets then.

Pac-12 Heisman candidates

Keith Price, QB, Washington

264.gif
2011 numbers
: Completed 242 of 362 attempts for a 66.9 completion percentage. Tossed 33 touchdowns to 11 interceptions and totaled 3,063 yards.

Why he'll win: If he manages to keep pace statistically with some of the other top quarterbacks in the country through a grueling six-week stretch to start the season, he'll make it awfully tough for people to ignore him. The last time folks saw him, he was upstaging Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. While the game was defensively nauseating, it was a veritable Smorgasbord of offense. Price made quite the impression. Now it's up to him to keep it going.

Why he won't: That same schedule that could propel him from dark horse candidate to legitimate contender could also sink his candidacy before it ever really gets off the ground. Three top-five teams in the first six weeks, and a potential top-15 team in Stanford means Price will have to be at his best early to make any sort of impression. Plus, he's going to have to prove he's the best quarterback in the conference (not easy with Mr. Barkley lingering) before he can prove he's the best player in the nation.

Campaign slogan: "Like RG3, but don't call me KP1."
Perkins, Wilson kicked off team
Posted by Bob Condotta

UW has just released a statement that reads simply:
"Joshua Perkins and Willis Wilson have been dismissed from the University of Washington football team due to a violation of team rules, Coach Steve Sarkisian announced today.
Neither Coach Sarkisian, nor the University, will have any further comment on this matter.''
Perkins was a redshirt freshman from Gahr High in Cerritos, Calif., who had been moved from receiver to H-back prior to the start of fall camp. He participated in UW's practice Wednesday night and had seemed to be coming on in recent days.

Wilson was a sophomore walk-on from Lakes High who had recently appeared to be the No. 4 tailback and was being counted on to provide some depth this season with Deontae Cooper again
Perkins sounds like he could have been a solid factor, Wilson not so much.

I'm nervous that if Washington doesn't get off to a really good start that the season will be lost. Schedule is so damn tough. I'm already hoping Price is back next year because maybe they'll have a better chance to win. :smh:
