Official Jazz thread

Lee Morgan, Oscar Peterson Trio, playing an Art Blakey classic... can't go wrong there.

Herbie Hancock - Butterfly

Hope everyone had a nice holiday & Happy New Year. Hope everyone has a great 2013...

Gretchen Parlato - Butterfly (with Meshell Ndegeocello) & Better Than

I've posted this song before by Gretchen Parlato but I just found this live version with Meshell Ndegeocello (one bad a** bass player/musician). Love what she did with this Hancock/Headhunters classic...

Edit - Daaaaamn!!! Just realized Pino Palladino is playing the other bass!!!! This must have been a great show...Daaaaaaaaamn!!!! :smokin

John Coltrane - Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise

Always go back to Coltrane (or Miles)....Always...This has Elvin Jones on drums & McCoy Tyner on piano but instead of Jimmy Garrison, Reggie Workman is playing bass (who Garrison later replaced)....

Soulive - Tuesday Night Squad (ft. Sam Kininger) & Shaheed

Nice post Wes. I'd rep you but apparently I've reached my limit...

Some Soulive for this morning...

 I wasn't aware you could run out of reps.
Hope you all had a great New Years.

Had a great new year. Hope you did too. Apparently if you've handed out too many reps, you get locked for a certain period. My ability to rep just resumed so last several posts were repped...

Nujabes does use Jazz for some of his music....RIP....

I didn't really like this album when I first heard it a few years back. Recently gave it another listen and it immediately became one of my favorite jazz albums. I think I wasn't able to hear all the nuances and appreciate the musical diversity the first time around.
Forgot to comment on this, but regarding "B"itches Brew, I remember trying to get into this album years and years ago, but just couldn't.  I was always into the more structured and melodic jazz-forms, so it just never worked for me.  Having said that, as a "jazz fan", I guess I should give it another shot.  We'll see.

Anyway, heard this in a restaurant today...

bookmarking. ive always wanted to get into more jazz (hearing rappers talk abt how much more money they have/how "my girl" is doing strange things to them is getting tiring). this thread may be a good place to start. to page 1 i go...

^ Always nice to see new jazz-listeners.  I guess, you should try to sample all the different types of jazz... standards, acid-jazz/fusion, contemporary jazz, etc... as well as big bands, smaller groups (trios, quartets, quintets, etc), solo acts, etc... just to see what you like.

Of course, IMO, there are the must-have albums for any jazz fan...

Here are a few...

'Sup TheGr8BlkHope. Welcome to Wes' thread...Sinner P already recommended Miles Davis Kind of Blue which would be a great older album to start with. For something new I'd recommend Robert Glasper's In My Element.

Miles Davis - Flamenco Sketches

Robert Glasper- Robert Glasper - Everything In It`s Right Place & J Dillalude

First vid is Glasper's interpretation of Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage & Radiohead's Everything In It`s Right Place....Second vid is Glasper's tribute to Dilla...

Marcus Strickland - Brooklyn Street Fair & Sesame Street

A young brother from Florida....Just discovered him...

Esperanza Spalding - Body & Soul, Concert - Festival de jazz de San Sebastian (8/8/09), & Concert - Austin City Limits (also with Madeleine Peyrou)

Never get tired of Esperanza Spalding. This lady is a once in a lifetime talent. Combo'd with her beauty....Posting a song that just hit my iPhone while on scuffle mode and 2 concerts of hers...

Luciana Souza - The Thrill Is Gone & Chega de saudade

Luciana Souza had 2 of my favorite releases last year (jazz wise)...The Book of Chet & Duos III...

Dexter Gordon - As Time Goes By (from Round Midnight) & The Shadow Of Your Smile

Love this movie....Herbie Hancock on piano (among others).

Louis Prima - Basin Street Blues

Can Prima be considered underrated? You can't help but feel good when listening to him. I put his stuff on a lot when I'm cooking a big meal...I know a lot of people think of Satchmo (or pops) when they think Nawlins butb Primo should be somewhere right behind him...
