Science majors why do you think people are so naive when it comes to "the cure"

For those that are in the science field why do you think folks are so naive to think its a cure for Aids?

I read Inventing the AIDS Virus by Peter Duesberg before I completed my Undergrad. Needless to say, my mind was blown.

Because of people like the poster above me, Uptown.

Spreading BS causing more deaths then they could imagine; blood on their hands.

Also they don't know even remotely the smallest details about what a virus is and how it infects a person. How mutations and DNA/RNA works. How HIV can actually turn into AIDS and why you die from AIDS.

They make assumptions based on ZERO fact and then because something SOUNDS GOOD to them, ie. Dr. Sebi, conspiracies that sound cool, etc... , they wholeheartedly believe these false authority figures. Again, with out knowing any FACTS.

Cmon, do people still think there is no cure for AIDS? Why the hell do
you think Magic Johnson still looks like a 100 million $? Lance Armstrong?
We have the cure for everything, they just won't let us have it. Rich people
would lose money if we were given this knowledge, oh boo hoo.

Wake up

Read that book to any healthy individual who is dying from the infection.

There have been some REALLY weird things to happen when it comes to curing stuff but as for a systematic cure, its going to be sometime...

The hard thing is that the virus mutates SUPER quickly and not only does it do that, it also changes radically...

And again, most of the public is scientifically illeriate...look on NT, you don't have to go far to find them.

These are the ones that watch a little mythbusters or some INTRODUCTION to some higher level science courses and all of a sudden they think they're free to start using words like quantum mindstate (not even a thing) or string theory to explain things they barely understand (see Deepak Chopra)

People in general have a shockingly LOW bar for good science and the desire for objective conclusions. They'll believe it if they cant understand it. They also accept things from sources simply because it comes from certain places of PERCEIVED (not actual) authority (like religion or alternative medicine) because it seems to come from a sincere place but it really isn't rooted in any sort of evidence or fact.

Its often times scientists who are charged with having to explain complex things to simple minded politicians that only know how to manipulate people...rather than having the patience to understand these things.

This is a good time for one of my favorite spoken word poems by Tim Minchin called "Storm"

(Mods PM me if i should take it down. I think its a great message though)

Cure? No.
Treatment? Yes.

Lance Armstrong had testicular cancer btw, smart guy.

Ask any doctor in an ER or who regularly sees aids/hiv patients and they'll tell you that you can pretty much live your life nowadays if you have HIV due to Anti-retrovirals that came out in 95 that changed the game and major drug advances since then...but it still doesn't make it any easier to completely live with.

Also it would benefit drug companies to find an aids cure...then tax you all to high hell.

I swear this CSI culture of instant scientific gratification is ruining us at times I swear...yeah it helps promote it...but most of it is so utterly false and inaccurate that sometimes you just wonder why bother...

I will say this though...i'll be surprised if they find a cure for cancer before if they find a cure for aids/hiv...

If I understand it properly, we may not be ever able to cure cancer in the way we can with other "ailments"

Most idiotic statement ever.

Lance Armstrong? So you think they just didn't wanna give the "cure" to Steve Jobs for his cancer?

Lose money LMAO

Do you know how much money the first company who could cure HIV/AIDS would make, being the first to patent the cure and the notoriety from it all? They would be effin RICH as hell.

New viruses are evolving everyday if they cured HIV/AIDS there would be another virus to keep money in their pockets later.

Just DUMB all of you who think this.

What's even more funny/interesting about the statement that I partially enlarged is that both of these organizations take money too. LOL They run and feed off of people's money.

People tryna say the drug companies  are greedy and want money so they hold back the cure (because they couldn't make gazillions off of the cure.....? Think about that), but don't even blink an eye when shelling out their money to religious organizations and/or for alternative medicine which has absolutely no facts or evidence to back up their treatments/cures.

All just because it sounds good to them.

OMG Lance Armstrong had cancer?!! I didn't know that.

His doctor told him it was game over soon and dude came back from
the dead to become a super athlete. My bad, what a dumb analogy he
wasn't "cured" of cancer or anything.

I guess some of you don't realize how much drug companies make off
of the TREATMENTS they provide over and over and over to patients.
If there was a cure that actually "cured" a patient, there is no more money
to be made.

Damn, some of you are just blah blah blah

can there really be a uniform cure? seems like the body and the different paths and actions a disease would take would be too complex (and tiny, minuscule) to have a cure "in a bottle" for many to use. i dont know anything about health science/body anatomy.

Cancer is a multi-factorial disease which affects many DIFFERENT genes and tissues in our body. There will never be a cure all. As long as we have DNA in our cells we will have cancer.

There will be cures for SPECIFIC types of cancer, but never a one shot pill that can cure all cancer subtypes. The genetic abnormalities which cause all the different cancer types are too varied to be all targeted by one thing, and targeting different tissue types is also another thing preventing. Cells in each tissue will respond differently.

You have to remember fighting cancer cells is like trying to fight and kill yourself without killing yourself.

Cancer cells are YOU, just an out of control part of you. So how do you kill yourself without killing yourself?

Bingo.
Your answer alone puts you leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. Congrats

Answer my question about Steve Jobs then smart ***.

That reasoning and logic is elementary and stinks of so much BS conspiracy theorist crap.

I guess YOU don't realize how much money can be made off of being the first company to cure HIV/AIDS. AND I guess YOU don't realize how many more diseases there are and will be forever to make money off of, for all eternity. New viruses evolving all the time.

Whoever said the cure was a pill?

I don't believe that at all

I don't even understand your Worf gif. What is so outlandish
about what I said? Drug Companies making billions off of Aids
and cancer treatments and then the patients just die? Sounds like
big business to me. Put that away son, use it on yourself.

I was scratching my head on why Lance Armstrong was brought up in a thread about a cure for AIDs.

He was not cured of cancer. That shh can metastasize at any moment and take his other nut. If anything he's more susceptible to getting it again than a person who has no history of it. It's not always a case of you just up and "catching" cancer.

A lot of yall don't even know the difference between AIDs/HIV. The Magic thing is just a running joke. Dude pumps himself with the drug that leaves little to no trace of it.

Who said Steve Jobs wasn't being helped? That is your arguement against the theory that a cure exists? Maybe Steve Jobs just died.

The drug company that "invents" the cure doesn't have an exclusive license to distribute it. It's not an iPhone, it's the cure for a disease

Please enlighten us then. What do you think the cure is? If you SOOOOOOO wholeheartedly believe that its not a pill, then tell us what is your reasoning?

Lets see where you're getting these ideas and "facts" from  that are making you truly believe in that statement, which YOU believe so much that you will spew it out in a debate. References, sources, experimental data, etc... and explain the biological mechanism as to why your cure works.

Or why a pill wouldn't work, as you believe.

I'd like to think there's a POSSIBLE cure for everything, but there's definitely at least treatment for everything.
Hell, I think there's an actual cure for the common cold, but whatever.

WOW

You know so little about anything science, medical, or business related. It's funny and sad at the same time.

SO Steve jobs was being helped by this MAGICAL CURE HIDDEN FROM ALL OF US POOR INSIGNIFICANT FOLK, but he still died? Or I'm sorry....he just died for some other unknown reason. It had nothing to do with the magical cure and it's effectiveness.

YOUR logic is that rich people like Lance Armstrong have access to these MAGICAL CURES and that's why they survive. SOOOOO my question was why did Steve Jobs die if he is rich as eff and important as eff? Him dying could only mean one thing..... THERE IS NO MAGICAL CURE!!!!!!  EVEN IF THERE WAS ONE LABELED AS THE "MAGICAL CURE" HE STILL DIED SO THERE FOR IT'S.... NOT A MAGICAL CURE, NOW IT IS?

LOL I want you to do me a favor and look up what PATENT means, and how businesses use them, including big pharm.

Steve Jobs was responsible for part of his own death.

Even though the prognosis for pancreatic cancer is incredibly poor because seeing it is really hard until its progressed, he hurt himself by doing all that nuts and berrys spiritual crap with eating herbs and focusing on his diet...that crap killed him when he could have had surgery much sooner.

This article addresses what could have prolonged steve's life: http://www.scientificamer...breviate-steve-jobs-life

Whats sad is that he had a better chance than MOST people with pancreatic cancer, but he was stubborn and wanted to go eat sticks and crap.

  Wrong.

Drug companies own copyrights for their drugs for years maybe even decades.

thats why we have generic drugs in the first place. This is a result of companies that find drugs that are ALMOST chemically similar and get to market it as something else but does the same thing.

For example, the plan b drug just went on sale OTC and thats a result of the patent on the drug expiring to encourage competition in the marketplace.

The patent is what keeps the companies with the big names in business in the first place by them having that exclusivity.

the amount of anti-scientific thought in here reminds me of this:
