Houston Texans Pre-Season 2014 - NT Bowl 2.5...Battle For Roster Spots

I know this was already reported in the NF thread, but....

Ed Reed signed with the Houston Texans to much fanfare. Like most big-name veteran free-agent signings, it hasn't worked out very well.

Reed's playing time has declined, and Texans interim head coach Wade Phillips was non-committal when asked if Reed still was a starter on the team, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Shiloh Keo's playing time has increased in the last few weeks, with Reed often on the field in sub-packages. Reed did not start in last week's loss to the Indianapolis Colts, marking the first time he came off the bench since 2003.

Phillips' decision to reduce Reed's playing time is not a huge surprise. Reed has just 14 tackles, with no passes defensed or forced turnovers in six games played. Reed struggled badly against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 and saw much less playing time after the team's Week 8 bye. Keo played 49 snaps against the Colts, and Reed played just 32 snaps. Rookie D.J. Swearinger played 63 snaps.

Reed is due $4 million next season. It's hard to imagine he'll be back in Houston, and it wouldn't be a surprise if we're seeing the final year of his likely Hall of Fame career.

I think we saw this coming but didn't want to admit it. If it weren't for fat Bullock, Keo would be 3-0....

There's talks about Foster possibly having back surgery. Ooooooh dear. Well, at 2-6, I'm all for shutting him down now to have the surgery and hope for a good recovery. No since of putting your body in any further bruising in a season like this. Tate's getting the start, Dennis Johnson backs him up, and Deji Karim will be 3rd, and also KR.

jj watt and andre were at the rockets lakers game. crowd went NUTS when they were on the screen

I don't know who this Victorian (#27) guy is, but hes already the Texans best special teams player outside of Shane Lechlar

Cushing. Daniels. Manning. Foster. Tate. Joseph. Kareem. Griffith. Tarpinian.....I'm surprised this team still has a pulse. Keenum 0-3 as a starter, and it's safe to say through no fault if his own. For the second week in a row, the defense makes plays, yet once again gives up 2-3 brutal big plays. I

'm glad this team will look different next year. Kub's stroke plus Keenum's play may actually buy Kub so e more time, and seems to shone the light that Kub's coaching isn't the problem, but Schaub was and Rick Dennison's play calling is the problem. Really looking forward to seeing how this team looks next season, and also how they finish out.

We played with some heart tonight -- but I can't believe Case Keenum is 0-3 with how well he has played.

Maybe that Romo comparison is more accurate than I'd like to admit

Keenum only has 1 crippling turnover so far this season, at the very beginning of the game. Though he takes risks, he's pretty careful with the ball. Room basically closes his eyes and chucks it. If you want to compare defensive letdowns, then that's definitely more like it.

This season is a wash as far as playoffs but it's not a wash for Keenum to gain experience. I will be watching to witness Keenum's progress.

Schaub and Yates days as Texans are numbered. It's time to shore up that O-line, Special teams and secondary.

This is a blessing in disguise Texan fans...great QB draft class and Wade as interim with a floundering D means he won't be promoted to head coach.

the future is bright gentlemen...

Depending on how Case finishes the season I want a QB, hell maybe I want a QB regardless.

I'll take Mariota or Manziel, those just happen to be my two favorite QB's in CFB.

I've said too many times before but we have to look at OL, safety, ILB, NT, OLB, maybe even a RB now. So many holes to fill. But they have to immediately address the RT position.

liked the way swearinger was playing yesterday. hopefully he'll gain more experience and be ready for next season. 8)

Case is doing the best he can considering the circumstances & talent surrounding him. And while this team does have glaring holes I don't think we can afford to pass on a 1st round QB.

10 games is enough to evaluate if Case can be the guy going forward. They still have to draft a QB though, and high.

It doesn't matter who plays QB if the o line doesn't get fixed. Cut Winston and let brisiel go to keep Chris Myers :smh:

Well one sucked and we couldn't afford the other. Both were making more than they probably deserved and we had salary cap issues.

Why we couldn't develop guys like Antoine Caldwell, Ben Jones, Newton & brooks amongst other issues

I'm all for drafting another QB regardless of Keenum's performance. Too many QBs in this draft. Agree about a space eating DT. That whole "we want NTs who can get up the field fast" theory needs to die out, cause that has hardly ever worked here. I've need saying this same thing since they drafted Okoye :rolleyes I'm sure there's some 6'4" 330+ guy out there who can do that. This teams philosophy needs to change, specifically the defense.

Once again, Shiloh Keo >>> Ed Reed at this point. He'd be best served as a DB coach right now. He was even playing special teams some yesterday. Ed Reed. Special teams. Wow.

Good to see Swearinger shake off his growing pains from earlier in the season. Really like what Ive been seeing from him the past few games.

Pretty sure this was the first ever non-PI pass defense Harris has had
