LOS ANGELES - His emotions can get the best of him at times, like when Lamar Odom tackled Boston's Ray Allen during a recent loss and was called for a flagrant foul.

But for the most part, Coach Phil Jackson doesn't have an issue with Odom's emotions.

Jackson wants Odom to keep things in check and not lose control. He doesn't want Odom to miss any more games, like he did Friday night while serving a one-game suspension for his foul on Allen.

Odom returned Sunday night, kept cool in a game in which a couple of technical fouls were called, and finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds against the Pacers.

Jackson said he usually likes Odom's attitude "because he plays with a certain air of freedom; he's loose.

"There are times when he can't let things go. Things don't happen right for him and he might get a refereeing call (against him) and he doesn't let it go. Those are times when I'd like for him to relax."

Jackson said he tries to help his players any way he can -- "Doing the cleansing breath; those type of things."

Kobe Keeping His Cool

In past seasons, Kobe Bryant had a bad habit of picking up technical fouls for arguing with the referees too much. But he has toned that down this season.

"Yeah, I'm very pleased," Jackson said.

Jackson recalled that Bryant got a technical foul against Utah, but it was in speaking up for a teammate.

"Other than that, he's been very controlled and stays off them a little bit," Jackson said. "We talked a lot about that during the offseason, about that ability to let those things go."

Jackson said he believed Michael Jordan was fouled on every play when he coached the Bulls. He said coaches and players would tell the referees, "Don't give him those cheap calls."

Jackson said the referees seemed to agree and didn't give Jordan the calls because he "was good enough to do it anyway."

"You just watch it in amazement," Jackson said.

Kwame Quick to the Post

Kwame Brown's conditioning is slowly improving since returning from a sprained left ankle and knee five games ago. He had eight points in 13 minutes.

Jackson said Brown has been doing a nice job in sprinting to the post.

"That's the strength of his game right now," Jackson said. "He's not as comfortable just catching (the ball) on the post and activating the ball."

Injury Updates

Sasha Vujacic (back) and Vladimir Radmanovic (ankle) both missed a second straight game.

Damn Phil..... I don't know about all that...

I'm not hating... I'm a huge Jordan fan and watched him growing up. Basically he was my idol...... I do believe he was fouled themajority of the time, particularly in the Detroit and NYK series and in his younger, more explosive days, but you think he was fouled on EVERY SINGLEPOSSESSION in his career? That's what Phil is saying....

edit: if you're talking about him getting fouled according to today's rules...then that's different, since this is a cupcake league today

I couldn't agree with you more. And that's coming from a fan of Mike.

Money could get to the free throw line if his sneaks were untied.

No. During the 80s and in the early 90s, he did not get the "favor" calls nearly as much as Wade does now..... If he drove to the basket he wasgetting hammered.... Have you seen the way the Pistons and Knicks used to foul basically anyone on the Bulls, especially MJ? One hard foul could end yourcareer pretty much...... Also the game was a lot more physical back then

Hard foul today = regular foul back then
regular foul now = no call back then
Hard foul back then = suspension today
Regular suspension back then = Artest 70+ game suspension today

However, during his 2nd 3 peat (particularly after winning the 96 Finals) he could get away with absolutely anything, including verbally abusing to therefs.

His verbal abuse of the officials and getting away with it makes up for anything that may or may not have happened on every single play, as Phil put it.

interesting...I kinda agree with Phil because way the game used to being played when MJ was in the L. I see the favoritism amongst officials with star playersin the L but still there were some hard fouls against MJ that were simply dangerous.

but...he also got away with lot of things. I mean...he did push Bryon Russell after all.

Why wouldnt someone want to file Jordan, I'd push him every chance I got.

I'm never going to say Mike didn't get calls or did get calls. The 90s game in which Michael excelled had different rule set and way more aggressivestyle of play due to emergence of high quality team defense.

agreed, its hard to compare era's in basketball. Since the rules and style of play changes.

no Shaq got fouled on every single play. I still shake my head when he gets called for an offensive foul. Dudes were damn near trying to take him out and theywould get the calls.

favourtism in the nba has always been atrocious and it has never made sense to me.
Man You aint Lyin', but its way worse now, its mainly the reason I cant get into the NBA like I used to. The calls arejust too subjective, theres no uniformity. I saw Ricky Davis get the top of his Braids clipped off his head the other day in Dallas with like 10 seconds leftand there was no call, I just turned the TV off.

How was he the original D Whistle, he only avg. about 8.2 FTA per game. I dont think thats that much for a person of jordans magnitude. I dont remember himgoing to the line 15-20 times a game like i see players nowadays! Not to say players avg. 15-20 FTA per game in a whole season, but it seemed like when jordanscored 50 or 60 pts in a game he got nearly all his points from the field and now when guys score 60 they get to the line about 20-25 times!!

P MAC ONE:
Mike got away with so much. Ask Bryon Russell.
Ask him what? About the momentum of a defender getting crossed up hard? About the science behind the probability that a grown man could be pushedby mere fingertips? If a defender can be pushed by having the offensive player swipe his jersey? Which one am I supposed to be asking him?

Truest !@$+ ever written!!

MJ pushed off on Russel, yes he got away with that one. Wade elbowed Dirk in the face and DIRK was called for the foul in the finals, in the 4th quarter.

ANd I agree with Phil. Watch any game where Jordan was being defended by John Starks, Gerald Wilkins, Joe Dumars, or even Gary Payton back in the day. Thenwatch one of these games where leBron or Wade or Kobe gets 25fts. It's no contest. Jordan never averaged 16ftas a game for a series. He was about 8 for hiscareer and 11 was the highest for a series. If you could magically take those old games from the 90's and make the refs call it by today's standardsbut the gameplay remain the same, no way Jordan is shooting less than 40 free throws.
