ITT: Everything Electro/Dubstep/House/Trance Music

If I wanted to start producing EDM, or dubstep, where would I start?

Like what equipment/software would I need?

I'm not from the Bay. I'm in Atlanta, if it matters.

Depends on what program you are gonna use to make the music, if it's fl studio all you really need is good headphones and know how to mix/master.

Here's a guy I like to watch from time to time, he's a sound designer I believe.

Whatever production software you like best and a midi keyboard controller will get you started fine. I've had great experiences with Korg hardware(I personally use a Microkorg) and my favorite softwares are Ableton Live and Logic. I don't have too much experience outside out of those 2 but they've done me well.

Seriously no ******g respect for others at all. If you come 30 minutes late to a set, you think it's a good ******g idea to bring you and your 15 bros to the front of the stage? My friend and others damn near got trampled. Starting fights and what not. Saw at least 3 fights tonight. Just stay home you idiots.

About 10 years ago I used to be heavy into the scene and the best thing about it (apart from the girls; house/dance girls are by far the hottest, why?) was that it was chill. People just came to have a good time.

It's gone a little more mainstream lately and that's where you might be getting all of the nitwits from. I still love listening to House/ Dance/Trance but I can't get down to party like that anymore.

Any of ya'll mess with BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes? What are your favorites?
For some it's too mainstream. It's cool by me. There's some decent stuff in there.

I was never really a purist per se. Whatever sounded good was fine by me. There are some who only listen to underground ****. If it sounded good to me, it was cool by me.

essential mix does a very good job of being very comprehensive when it comes to genres/styles of the guest djs.
so i donno why anyone would say the show as a whole is "too mainstream".
just depends on the dj/live act.

Yeah, definitely does not follow a formula. And even the so-called "mainstream" DJs don't play their Vegas-style club shows when they do EM. Hell, just listen to the difference between a mainstream DJ's performance at a European dance music festival compared to an American festival (or American club show). There are noticeable differences.

:frown: I never got to see crystal castles live. they come to NY on a wednesday when I had work. I'm not going to ultra, I have tickets for EDC but I highly doubt EDC would pick them up, even though this is Ultras 2nd or 3rd time. and with student loans I'm starting to wonder if I can afford the flight / hotel / spending $$ for Vegas. Its 5 months away but these bills.

Oh and Zedd is that dude :pimp:

"Electronic Dance Music" isn't a genre, it's a label given a couple years ago by big publications to group all dance/electronic music like Techno, Trance, DNB, all variations of house, etc. since they have no clue how to differentiate between them. I.E. if you read an article on say John O'Callaghan, Rolling Stone would most likely say "EDM Artist John O'Callaghan" instead of "Trance Artist John O'Callaghan" when talking about him because they don't know what the **** trance is. From what I noticed people correlate progressive trance (songs like Language, In My Mind, etc.) with "EDM." Progressive trance, IMO, is the most poppy played out **** and has hurt the scene altogether with it's emergence, but if people want to enjoy it good for them. All of this music was around for quite a few years before the term "EDM" existed though man. It's like when they tried to label it all "Electronica" in the 90's

The term "EDM" has been around a long time. This isn't some new-fangled thing of the last couple years.

How many people actually called it "EDM" here when it originated though? Even if it was around it's not like it was the term used by actual fans of the music up until as of late, and it's not like anybody outside of America uses the term at all either.

I've never heard EDM used in public and for the people I hang with that know the scene we still go in deeper to say trance, electro etc but its easier talking about an artist and we'll get/know their associated acts to get a feel for them "their just like X group". you can say the same for every major genre with its subgenres. I go through it with metal all the time
