IT Jobs

I just recently got my COMPTia A+ Certification.. that **** was super easy

The next 2 Im zeroing in on is Network + and the CCNA (Cisco Certification)

I know a dude that got his CCNA about 3 years ago and that boy is living the Life
and my A+ has opened up many doors for me

I need to just go and take the test for A+. I'm currently in school taking classes for my Associates in CIS and then moving on to my Bachelors. I check job websites daily to get an idea of what's out there.

if you don't mind me asking, how did you prepare for the A+ exam?

A+ is such a joke. But people look for it AND you'll need your A+ if you want to get company certs for HP, Lenovo, Dell, etc (or the A+ is the minimum requirement to take other certs). If you can't pass the A+, then you have no right to be in IT.

I used the test engine in the CD-ROM in the A+ Certification for Dummies book. I just went through the questions for a few minutes everyday. After a while, I almost memorized them.

When I went to take my A+ test(s), I was in and out of the testing place in 10 minutes. The questions were exactly same as the CD-ROM.

I say it all depends on where your passion is, I have a degree in Computer Science, but chose to go a route other than Software Development, I didn't apply myself to the fullest while in school, but I have still managed to find work through Contracts, and for about the past year and a half thats what I've been doing since I graduated, just to get my experience up to where it needs to be....but for when you're searching for jobs I would suggest Dice.com and indeed.com....and to improve skills I would also take a look @ w3schools.com and youtube as their are plenty of users who have online tutorials for different software and coding languages.

Thanks. I'll be putting in an order for this book when I return from my trip.

i have my A+, network +, ccna, studying for ccna seucurity and switch of the ccnp program.

IT is very broad- try to get into an environment where you can get a lot of hands on with different things- networking help desk, customer service, programming....etc...

see what you like, then you can start seeing what certs to go for. you dont need your A+ if you have your bachelors. no point of getting A+ if your going to the programming route.

Dude why are you pointing him to a pay site? Are you just randomly googling and pasting?
You obviously have no clue what you are talking about.
Examcollection.com + Visual CertExam Suite

he doesnt need a plus , why would you need it when you can just say you have it, nobody checks for certs now this isnt 10 years ago smary guy

You are right most jobs don't verify your certs.

Still wouldn't just put down a bunch of certs I don't have.

alot of people do that , when you try and get a job most places will look for experience and certs , if your trying to get a job and someone has more certs and experience than you , your not gonna get called in for the interview , i learned that , the more certs you have and experience the better , most places will just do a phone interview and hire you the same day , thats why you cant just say you have CCNA or Net + you have to know the vocabulary too so when they start asking questions your not stunned or lost

sometimes, you need your certs verified. for example for A+, if you want to do legit warranty service on PC's and order parts, companies like HP, Lenovo, Dell won't even let you order parts unless your A+ cert # is on file.

Talk to work, lots of companies will pay for you to take whatever certs you want as long as it's within reason (and you pass).

Working for the Government, well the D.O.D anyways but I'm sure it's the same all around, they do have to be verified. There is an online tracker system you have to scan and input them into, and there is an Information Assurance person who is the foreman of verifying them. I don't know how the private sector is, but trust the Government is all about red tape and things they think make it all more efficient. You aren't going to get very far lying about certs you don't really have

The A+ is two exams totalling $400.

If you have a degree I wouldn't waste my $400.

Money would be better spent on Cisco or Microsoft certs.

actually government jobs most people lie about that ish too , its in the newspapers and all over internets , you can lie about everything and get payed handsomely like me :smokin

You kill me Slade, but do you man

look at people that get car insurance with no license look how easy it is to get that and then people going to military bases and buying things with military discounts and their wearing towels on their head :smokin and in court i can wear a towel or a KUFI on my head and say its my religion :smokin:smokin:smokin:smokin

depends on what you're going for, A+ is a start if you want to service hardware.

if you want to go into software development, you just need to learn your languages (don't need MCSE or Cisco).

Cool thread.

I went the military route and got my Security Clearance, Network Plus and Security Plus. Also working on CCNA certification and CISSP. :pimp:

I have been applying to many of the USAJOBS and got about 3 interviews with more applications being put in every week. I am hoping to land something but any person who's in the DoD, hit me up. I've done everything right so far and I'm getting out this November.

Thanks fam! :pimp:

I am in the IT field and I live in DC which is like IT job heaven with the government, DOD and many other agencies located here. When I first got out of college I was applying like crazy. It took me about 6 months to get something in the field. I got my A+ after I started and my job sponsored my TS clearance. Now when I post my resume online I get calls or emails daily.

Location is the key though and most places are looking for experience over anything else. With all the contracting going on they want people that they can bill at the highest rate possible. I have even been told by recruiters to "come up with a few more years of experience" which basically means lie about it. In my experience I don't think any of my credentials have ever been verified besides my clearance.

Do you get drug tested ?

I could get you something on Ft Sill working with the team I used to be on, sooner rather than later. Were you Commo? If you know radios too, it's a company in Houston starting kats out in the 120s. Northrup Grumman also gives out big checks to prior service and they're on most bases.

I got drug tested by the way to the poster above. It was kind of stupid how they administered it. I feel like if I wanted to cheat I could. They had a small bathroom and a bunch of nurses give you the cup then send you in there to pee and listen at the door. If I was dirty, I would just scoop up some toilet water and when they run it, it'll just look like I had really watery pee which is the case anyways since prior to gonig you knock out a couple gallons of water, lest you not be able to produce enough specimen and have to go back to the end of the line. Or you could just stop doing drugs for a month or however long it takes to flush it out your system.

You also will have to be able to obtain a secret clearance.

I find the IT really interesting. I already graduated college but I would like to take a step into the field and see where it takes me. Any suggestions for a good way to start off?
