It's been speculated that Apple will unveil it's pint-sized version of it's popular tablet in October after the hype dies down for the iPhone 5.

Here is a neat mockup video that shows what the purported 7.85" tablet is suppose to look like -

Personally, I'm a fan of the smaller form factor. It just makes the device much more portable. Lugging around the 10" iPad sometimes can be a chore. I think this will be a huge hit this holiday season. Obviously, the price is everything but I think it will be reasonably priced ($350 - $400). A cellular plan would be awesome. Actually, it should go without saying. Having something so compact and mobile begs for a data plan of some sort.

Anyone planning to purchase?
Rumor: iPad mini invitations set to be mailed out Oct. 10

That would suggest an Oct. 17 unveiling with sales to begin in early November
FORTUNE -- This is a rumor we have no reason to believe except it comes from a major Apple (AAPL) investor who says he's heard it from "multiple sources."

According to our source, who asked not be named, there appears to be some truth to the widespread rumors  that Apple is preparing to launch a smaller and cheaper version of the iPad -- often called the iPad mini or iPad air and usually described as having a 7.85-inch screen.

What our source adds is the specificity of a date: The press, he says, can expect invitations to go out on Oct. 10.

If the rumor is true, and if Apple follows its usual scheduling protocol, that would suggest a special event to unveil the product on Wednesday, Oct. 17, with a launch day of Friday Nov. 2 -- plenty of time to capture holiday sales.

Apple has not commented on the rumor, which is not surprising given that the company has never uttered a word  in public -- one way or the other -- about its future tablet product plans.

I hope this is real. I'm looking to get one for my son (for Christmas) & this would be perfect...

was thinking of buying an ipad but the ipad mini rumors made me hold off, will wait until they are in stores so i can compare

I was thinking of waiting for this but I bought a Nexus 7 yesterday instead. I already have an ipad 2 in the houe that I bought for my dad and I just bought the new iphone. The smaller size is good for people who don't want to carry around a regular sized tablet.

If it is within a decent price range, I will consider getting one

I've had my eye on this for a while.

I basically use my touch as a tablet. This looks perfect as long as the price point is right.

got my ipad mini a couple fridays ago, called an iPhone

when they come out with a bigger ipad i'm all ears, but until then i'm good with my 3rd gen

Cool idea but you know they're going to make the storage on it incredibly wack and it'll cost too much to get one with decent storage capacity. They hit it better with the new iPod Touch. Great redesign, good storage and not a gross price.

It's a dope device but just like I have no use for an iPad because I have a laptop, I have no use for a mini bc I have a iPhone.

I think I am finally understanding the apple haters more. Apple literally is taking a already successful product and changing one thing, re-introduce it as "NEW" and the fiends come out and go crazy. Sad thing is that it will sell out without hours. Its just a smaller iPad :rolleyes

If this is real and the specs aren't too gimped because of the smaller form factor, I'll sell my 32 gig iPad 3 and cop two mini joints. My wife would love a mini to take with her to work.

Eh, there's a new market for smaller tablets. It'll go up against the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. It gives people options, I don't care if they say it's something "new" or not. People like different choices for phone screen size, so why not tablets also?

Don't mind Boost. He's just trolling an Apple related thread, as usual.

That's his schtick now.
