Ken Blackwell, tapped last week by President-elect Donald Trump to head domestic policy during the businessman's transition to the White House, has made anti-LGBT statements for years. Among them: Homosexuality is a sin, and gay people, just like petty thieves and fire-setters, can be rehabilitated.

The Ohio politician has long endorsed a controversial mental health practice known as conversion therapy or reparative therapy. The goal is to cure a person of his or her homosexuality, and in the case of transgender people, to reaffirm the gender into which they were born.

In the past, treatments have included everything from inducing vomiting to using mild electric shock while patients viewed homoerotic images. Since the 1990s, however, the therapy has been denounced by many medical and scientific societies and even outlawed in a handful of states. In 2015, the Obama administration expressed disapproval of the practice after Leelah Alcorn, a 17-year-old transgender teen in Ohio, took her life after being forced by her parents to undergo conversion counseling.

While Blackwell will be overseeing a wide swath of domestic issues facing the new administration, one big question facing the LGBT community is whether a Trump administration will promote the discredited therapy.

Two years ago, in a radio interview with Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, which has been deemed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Blackwell appeared to blame the deaths of six individuals in a 2014 mass shooting in Isla Vista, Calif., on the LGBT rights movement, saying it undermined "natural marriage."

"When these fundamental institutions are attacked and destroyed and weakened and abandoned," said Blackwell, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council, "you get what we are now seeing, and that is a flood of these disturbed people in our society that are causing great pain."

In an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2006, the former Ohio secretary of state claimed that being gay was a “choice” that could be “changed.”

“I think it's a transgression against God's law,” he told the Columbus Dispatch at the time. “And I think you make good choices and bad choices in terms of lifestyle. Our expectation is that one's genetic makeup might make one more inclined to be an arsonist or might make one more inclined to be a kleptomaniac. Do I think they can be changed? Yes.”

And in 2009, on Michelangelo Signorile's radio show, Blackwell reaffirmed his stance, saying, "People choose to be who they are, as they choose to break civil law and God's law. ... I think you can choose not to be homosexual."

I know that Mike Pence approves of cutting hiv funding in favor of putting that towards conversion therapy. If that **** makes headway -___-

It's amazing at how Trumps election has had a positive effect for right wing candidates overseas in their bids for office. Le Pen in France, the PVV in the Netherlands, and others.

*The PVV in the Netherlands. Le Pen and Geert Wilders have been doing well for quite some time now though.

Trump certainly helped but they had a lot of momentum even before Trump.

I'd be surprised if Le Pen and Wilders' parties don't take major wins in the upcoming elections.

Unfortunately it'll only be a matter of time before the incredibly hateful rhetoric from people like Geert Wilders (makes Trump look like a saint btw) spreads to my country. Our largest conservative party NVA has the most seats and I expect that trend to remain the same. Their party leader Bart De Wever has made some explicitly racist remarks but it has yet to translate into oppressive legislation. He proposed a burkini ban earlier this year but the rest of the party quickly shut that down.

Our racist party Vlaams Belang has been successfully marginalized into near irrelevance over the years so I'm not worried about them. Yesterday the former party leader of Vlaams Belang spoke at a neo-nazi convention in Greece. Regardless of how racist Belgium may be towards our middle eastern population, there's limits. And speaking infront of a bunch of neo-nazis is certainly crossing the limit of what's deemed acceptable.

The question is if the NVA will continue its path as a strong conservative party or devolve into a Geert Wilders type party.

So in America the issue is what to do with the blacks and Hispanics.

In Europe, what to do with the Africans and middle eastern immigrants.

Why would you allow your nations to displace people then come back and act all reactionary to a problem largely created by Europeans?

This is what I was talking about before... "regardless of how racist belgium may be towards our middle eastern population"

The self hate is too real.  You are gonna spend your life getting offended by words and giving benefits of doubt,  while an army of voters grows that will roll back every advance great men from your country have made.  I swear I read these posts and imagine a robbery scenario in which someone would say..

" please, take everything, im a bad person who got this all from injustices of the past, here, my atm number is xxxxx, I respect your rights"

Acknowledging racism's existence is self hate now apparently. A patriot wants to improve his/her country and see it flourish to the best of its ability. All major issues must be confronted in order to do that. And racism happens to be a major issue as well, along with the language barrier, the refugee crisis/immigration, national debt, ...

Feel free to conjure up any more ridiculous strawman arguments

That's very white of you to say. Keep it up, Trump will import you, so you can be a member of his cabinet. He doesn't have a problem with white immigrants at all, I mean, he is married to one. Perhaps a soliloquy on the greatness of eugenics in your next post, will get you noticed even further.

Europeans have created a labor problem. What happens to a group of people you exploit for labor when you move on to the next group?

 these guys

so denying racism exists is non self hate ?

Donald Trump got killed among Mexican American voters which should not be surprising. Trump did pretty well with non Mexican Latinos. Turns out that Latinos from the Islands have colonized minds, which should not be a surprise to those of us who follow this thread.
Spot on. It's no coincidence that the most pro-Drumpf black people on this forum came from the Caribbean islands. Their sub-conscious mentality is that if they show how anti-immigrant they are, that they themselves will be safe.

Someone help me understand why they would bring back manufacturing jobs to the united states? Whats the incentive?

If there was really a benefit, they would have done it long before now, no?

The tech sector is booming and the future. Why would a company choose to lose potential revenue? Patriotism?

If I'm correct, I think the idea is that imposing high tariffs on imported goods from companies who have moved their manufacturing outside of the US would give companies the incentive to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US to avoid the tariffs. I'm not sure how feasible that is and how the cheap labor costs outside of the US fit in that scenario. @RustyShackleford  is an economist and can tell you a lot more about that.

Just to add, they also argue that lowering the corporate tax rate will give companies more money to re-invest in jobs.

Nah, we have proof that Drumpf violated the embargo and did business with the Castro regime and the Cubans in Florida still voted for him:

http://europe.newsweek.com/donald-trump-cuban-embargo-castro-violated-florida-504059

The reason they voted for him is to feel uppity about themselves and think they're movin on up to the east side and about to become white themselves, thinking they're safe now.
