Whither the Republican Party?

Whenever a party loses an election big time, there is a lot of wailing and the pulling of hair. Although the popular vote was close, the Republicans lost nearly all the swing states, including New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico. They probably lost Florida, and almost lost North Carolina. It is true that some of the races were close, but in politics a win is a win and a loss is a loss. With the loss of Virginia and close call in North Carolina, the party's base has shrunk to the Deep South (except for Florida), and big, empty states in the Great Plains and Mountain West where the buffalo once roamed but the electoral votes never did and still don't.

As we mentioned many times this year, the traditionally blue states--the ones Democrats have won five times in a row--are worth 242 EVs. Obama won every one of them. None were even close. Not even Wisconsin, where Obama had a 7-point margin even with a Wisconsite on the opposing ticket. Romney made a last-ditch effort to win Pennsylvania, but came up short. The blue team won by 5 points. So next time around, we can talk about the 242 EVs that the Democrats have won six times in a row. Rick Santorum or Marco Rubio aren't going to make a dent here, probably not Paul Ryan, either. Chris Christie might.

But something new has been added to the mix. New Mexico is now dark blue, so make that 247. Obama also won Nevada, Iowa, and New Hampshire by margins of 6, 5, and 5 points, respectively. If they get added to the Democratic base, it becomes 263. If the Democrats have a floor of 263 EVs in 2016, the Republicans have to win all of Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. All of them. Moving farther to the right, as seems entirely possible, is probably not the ticket to win these big, diverse swing states.

Despite the fact that it is unmentionable, we are going to mention the 800-pound gorilla wandering around the polling place: race. There are certainly white voters in Virginia, North Carolina, and Northern Florida who didn't vote for Obama due to his color but are otherwise not fundamentally opposed to a Democrat. All of the 2016 likely Democratic nominees--Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Andrew Cuomo, and Martin O'Malley--are lilly white. Even senator-elect Elizabeth Warren (who will be under pressure from the left to audition for the role of Howard Dean), is 31/32 white. The racist voters might well vote for a Democrat in 2016, unless the nominee is a woman, which opens a different can of worms.

Demographically, the Republican Party's base is angry, old white men. That is no formula for future victories. Democrats did well with women, Latinos, and young people. Unless the Republicans stop trying to repeal both Roe v. Wade and Griswold v. Connecticut, they are not going to improve their standing with women. If Obama makes a big effort at passing immigration reform and either gets it or has it go down on a party-line vote in the House, the Republicans can write off Latinos for a generation. As to young people, political identities are set early. Twenty somethings who have now voted for the Democrats twice aren't going to be easy to peal away unless the Republicans can pull an elephant out of the hat.

NOW THATS FUNNY, :smokin

I was just called a free loader for going to college

Needless to say I would tolerate that foolishness.

law of da land =/= government assistance
thats like saying grandfathered cellphone plans are somehow subsidized because people got locked in a better deal then you did.
when you in a spot in NY for more then 30 years, and you live in a pre-war building, it qualifies for rent control/stabilization.
when folks live in da projects, they fall under rent subsized housing for LOW income. i can make 150k a year and STILL qualify
for my apt since it has ZERO to do with income. dont hate da player, hate da game. :smokin
landlords receive GENEROUS tax breaks for having these types of spots in their building. program is dunzo, so if you got it, its
gold plated.

If you're making $150K... Which I highly doubt, but let's say you are... That's a very good paying job... But that's also not far from broke.

So you would be cool with ending the tax cut for your landlord in return for them being allowed to raise your rent?

Increase tax income and ending of a entitlement.

WIN-WIN!!!!!

Or are you just cool with a government ******g with entitlements that don't benefit you?

Honestly? I hope we go off cliff head first.
Lets just rip da bandaid off now, take da medicine, and come
Out strong.
Its literally a reset button to 2001.

To address this...and if I'm off-base, I apologize in advance.

But you're on government assistance, right? If this is how you are living your life and things are going well for you, why would you hope for a sharp decline in the economy? I'm not following.

I need stabilaztion (sp?) in the economy and NO fiscal cliff because I'm trying to move a property of mine. I need the housing market to do well. The looming fiscal cliff would suck for me.

No i aint on government assistance, and contrary to popular belief, im FAR from broke.
.

Ninjahood..Let's just forget all this political foolishness and take some time to be real with ourselves. We all know what neighborhood you stay in. We've all seen your living situation, shoot we've even seen the gear and jewelry you rock.

You're not far from broke...

I'd bet on being close to homeless, no offense..

I started thinking about how hard it would be for someone in this generation to become president (the 18 year olds and younger) would be...

The reason I say that is because with internet forums, blogs, and social networks being the norm nowadays, the kid dreaming of one day being president would have to have such a CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN record on the interwebz, right? I mean that kid would have had to refrain from posting anything considered excessive, extreme, or derogatory (even if joking) his whole life right? Everything from facebook party pics, spur of the moment tweets, etc. Because if he hadn't, then his would be opponent in the presidential race could in theory, dig up all of that right?

Not really, unless they go Jrose5 on people. I mean Obama said that Kanye acted like a "jackass" so it's not as crazy as you think. Romney used to be a bully when he was young.

Time to lock this up man, nothing constructive left. Typical delusional ninja defending living in squalor and investing in shoes. Glad this election is over with, see you guys in the congress vs. obama thread.

Leave the man alone.

He's doing double duty posting in here and posting about fighting transsexuals in the grandest Transsexual thread NT has ever seen.

The man is far from broke and hasn't missed a meal.

If you lost your job.. How long will you survive.
A year at best?
If that?
You know who isn't broke someone who if they lost their job could live comfortably for years.
As Deuce has indicated 100s of times.. You're what people would call a C-Class Republican.

@ dudes going in on ninja.

Republicans are like bench warmers on a championship team.....they act superior and have a sense of accomplishment.....until they not on that team anymore. Its alot of "republicans" are one lay off or medical emergency from falling off.  Then once they are on the outside looking in they finally realize that Republicans don't care about them even though it was all good a week ago. Stop playing yourself people.

Shout out to Obama for shooting hoops with Pippen like a Boss...... can we say EPIC.

Ever thought if Michelle ran?? hmmm

You say its sujective yet you want a video? You don't even know of the matter your speaking of. Its fact what I said my friend. Maybe as a whole more hispanics in this country listen to Yankee, but its the latinos whos vote actually count(you know the ones here legally) that matters most  and more of them are listening to JAy and B.

How the **** would you know this? like seriously its not FACT its YOUR opinion...

it's REALLY odd that a man in his late 20s would cool sleeping on a twin bed (w/ the teddy bear sheets) in a 4x5 box while claiming they're doing well. Who knows...maybe he's Da Heights version of Warren Buffett. Also, I could have sworn you said your mom was getting gov't assistance by way of food vouchers. If that's the case, what were the stances of both Romney and Obama on cutting funding for those who do seek or have gov't help?

So because he lives in Washington Heights, he's broke? I don't know his financial situation, but some of you throwing stones couldn't afford to move into that neighborhood today. Like other gentrified neighborhoods in the city its very expensive to find something decent. Not surprised it turned into a free for all. The stupidity and ignorance are astounding. Block list growing by the minute.

Lock this up.
