The Top 25 Best Black Sitcoms of All Time

The list is ok and I agree that The Boondocks should be on it but if I HAD to replace it with an actual sitcom I would with My Brother & Me. The shows 13 episodes taught me more than some of these multiple season shows who "made an impact in the community".
i mean i get ppl with the whole nostalgia aspect of things...but come on my brother and me was hot garbage. the writing, the acting, i mean seriously i get the whole not alot of shows thing, and it being short lived etc... but hell no is it a top anything. not even a top black show. i mean hell amen, the parkers, thats my momma, out all night, gimmie a break, webster, amos and andy, thats so raven if you wanna throw in a kid show, or even cousin skeeter. hell hangin with mr cooper, for your love, hell short lived just jordan or romeo even. If just throwing out black shows in general i dont see why the arsenio hall show isnt on the list.

i didn't read of the replies
i don't want to.

Martin's my favorite. :pimp: idc who says it's corny. i guess i like silly comedy. whatever. the show is potent

gotta go with

1.cosby show
2.fresh prince
3.family matters
4.different world

anything else is criminally wrong. I cant even watch Family Matters now, but that TGIF block was something serious back in he day. It had all the elements of a great family sitcom, Funny characters, hot ( at the time) girls, family lessons etc

You don't know what satire is? If so I can see how ppl can get a whole different message from The Boondocks.
I know I was being a smart *** after I saw me putting it down twice but it was a good show but was canceled without a finale like a lot of other black shows including some on the list

damb shame :smh:
Man I still watch The Wayan Bros. reruns hoping I'll see a season finale.

Season finale or series finale? It never got a series finale :smh:
Thanks for correcting me, series finale.

I was too young to appreciate "ROC"

I remember they had some live eps and "serious" subject matter.
I assume I missed out

I remember Roc being a very good show, but I mostly remember it for the serious/drama aspects than the comedy

I get sad when I think about the death of the black sitcom

why can't shows like this exist now?

Same here, but I think it's really just the cultural climate, just like in music.

As for this list, I was a fan of every one of these except for The Show Show (always thought it was overly hokey, and preferred 'Cosby' that had Doug E Doug), Julia, Fat Albert, and Diff'rent Strokes (just never saw them much based on age). Though the order could be shuffled, this is a very good list.

Also, as far as 'A Different World', though I remember it being a funny show, it wasn't until last year when I watched nearly every season (after not seeing it for years) that I realized how flat out hilarious and socially relevant it was, and honestly still is. After they booted Lisa Benot off and centered it around Dwayne and Whitney, it became so much better. Legit laugh out loud stuff.

Damn...too much nostalgia here. I feel like all my favorite black sitcoms (well, really sitcoms in general) are somewhere between 1994-2006, with a handful of exceptions. I just feel like they don't make many funny shows anymore, and when they do, they are either cancelled out of nowhere, or have some writer leaves and the show badly suffers from it. Even some of the lesser talked about shows (Eve, Cuts, Off Centre, etc) are funnier than newer sitcoms in recent years. It's just something odd, I just can't really get into a lot of comedies now.

Btw, almost every ABC sitcom in the TGIF lineup had a Disneyland episode. Disney owns ABC. Its crazy how this list has inspired talk of alot of those short-lived, lesser known black sitcoms. It surprised me to see someone actually mention "Out All Night" lol. Even "My Brother & Me" (all 5 episodes) I liked "Sparks", personally.

My man said Sparks . I remember that show, Uncle Phil was good on that too, I know that's not his name but he'll always be Uncle Phil. I liked Out All Night too, w/that young Vivica :smokin and Duane Martin

wow I actually forgot about "Sparks" but yeah that was a good show but we all know what happened there

there was also another show that premiered with it I think it was called "Good News." It was basically "Amen"

even had one of the actress' from "Amen" but only lasted 1 season

List is cool...I agree with most that the ranking should be changed (Bernie Mac show > Family Matters?? No.) , and the honorable mention list is strong too. No love for Thea or Me and the Boys?? Lol they were essentially the same show.
"The top 25 best Black USA sitcoms of all time"

I doubt anyone on NT has ever seen Desmond's, but it should be held in at least the same regard and esteem as The Cosby show -It helped revolutionize the way black culture was perceived in the UK

Thank you for reminding me about this!!  I agree that probably not many people would know about this show. Hell, I'm sure I only know about it because my parents are from the BVI.

Boodocks is funny but shouldnt be there

There has been so little black sitcoms, Im pretty sure this is most of them.

yeah this is really out of order

but a sad thing I noticed was that the average for shows lasting was only 5 seasons :smh:

Not sure what you're implying, but five seasons is impressive for any scripted TV show, regardless of genre. Shows just lose steam eventually. For example, Family Matters lasted about three season too long. By the end, it was on a different network, they had a different woman playing the mom, and they tried to focus the entire show around Urkel. It was a miserable failure that they tried to make work for a couple seasons.

Living Single should def be a top 5 in my opinion. Before Friends (even if it was only one season) there was Living Single. Martin should def be a top 3, I might even say number 1 black sitcom of all time. Maybe I'm biased growing up in the 90s, but the impact Martin had was remarkable. 21 years later Martin is still played regularly. Some of these shows will be in syndication, and then taken off and then put back on. Martin for as long as I can remember has always aired. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't even think The Cosby Show is aired nowadays...well maybe probably on TV Land. But I get why it's number 1 though. It was the first time you really saw a black successful family that was positively relatable to the average American family.

Dope list though. Positioning is def off and some shows are missing.

Yeah I definitely wanted to bang the women on Living Single. It was a really good show. Young black girls don't have that cool role model with self respect today.

:x

Maxine looked like Tevin Campbell, Queen Latifah looked like a LB. The chubby lightskinned girl was slow. Only nice one was the short joint and I can't remember or spell half of their names

Get the hell out of here with that. Nostalgia distorts everything. It didn't even get a second season and was ok at best.

What is an actual sitcom? I'm not understanding how people throw shade at the Boondocks because its not a live action show. The Simpsons is one of the greatest sitcoms ever if not the greatest and its animated. The Boondocks is a critically acclaimed series. I don't get the beef.

And any show getting five seasons is a huge accomplishment. When it goes past that you risk the chance of jumping the shark. The Office says hello.
