The Old PlayStation Thread | *NEW THREAD IS UP*

I would LOVE to see a video game version of Blood Diamond.
MGSV sounds like it's going to have some serious Blood Diamond vibes.
The trailer was awesome! Hopefully that comes into fruition!

It would be cool to see a game with a serious story with a protagonist that doesn't fit the norm.

TWD was great for not following that trend.

Telltale made the fact that you're Black matter to some extent.

Espically when you had to explain to white people why a little white girl is following you around.

The last of us has one of the most engaging stories to date. The story carried the game. I love stories, so I'd want more games to follow suit. Heavy Rain, Uncharted, GOW(to some extent), and GOW(playstation).

Games with good writing are so few nowadays. I tone out the story for so many games that I play, except those that grip me. I want game cutscenes to be like "you better not skip me or you'll regret it." Instead of cutscenes are like "Hey look at these guys talking while carrying big guns. They have to kill something"

Do you guys think consoles will gain more of these story driven games or do you think the pc will get those?

It's crazy to me that since 2007 I can't even list 10 GOOD not GREAT story driven games, whereas with movies, my list is endless.

I would LOVE to see a video game version of Blood Diamond.

If you haven't seen this movie, I'll personally ship you my copy.

I'd prefer good gameplay and atmosphere than a good story in a video game. The reason being, video game writers are complete garbage; they literally have no idea what they're doing when it comes to story telling or how to pace a plot. Books (duh), film, and television are so far ahead of videogames, it's crazy. The only proper way to convey a good story in a video game is through game play and mechanics rather than cut scenes and very few developers can grasp this concept. They don't know how to tell a story without telling a story; the old show, don't tell technique.

It's so hard to compile a list of video games with great stories, there's probably less than 15, but I'll try a top 5.

Silent Hill 2
Final Fantasy Tactics

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Chrono Trigger

Shadow of the Colossus

I agree to an extent. Maybe if some devs took a risk on creating a good story maybe other devs would hire better writers. But of course those wanting good stories would have to pony up that $60 upon release day.

I didn't like TLOU's/Heavy Rain's gameplay for the most part, but their stories were great. I'll replay those games in the years to come.

I just used cutscenes as an example of how games usually tell stories. You do mindless missions for a couple minutes, then cutscene exposition.

In the tlou just playing the game was a "cutscene." When you're just walking around with Ellie/Joel talking then those "tall you-know-what" come out of nowhere.

Those sort of aspect needs to be in games, I feel. It was so subtle yet, made aimlessly walking around have meaning to it.

I still need to check out Shadow of Colossus.

I can't do anything that has to do with horror. I've tried.

That sword guy from Silent Hill was enough for me.

VI is great but I wanted to only include one RPG and X is okay.
I asked this question in iYen gaming thread. What makes a good story in your opinion? I guess I'm just simple to please because I have played quite few games with gret storylines imo. After I finished FF X and remembering my journey, I was bout ready to shed a tear during Yuna's speech

To me the simple answer is that the story makes you feel something.

If a game can make you feel, I think it has a great story.

This one part in Heavy Rain, I was screaming at my tv. NO!!!

That's only game that I've played of last gen that has made me do that.

Same way I think. That being said, damn near evey Final Fantasy game before FF XIII has left me with those "feels". I agree with your take on Heavy Rain's story, it was one hell of a story but there was hardly any gameplay.

GameStop selling white Dualshock 4 and White Gold Wireless headset now!

Im almost more excited for COD now that I know I am not picking it up day one.

One weekend in December/January when I am bored I'll scoop it. The game is always so fun those first few times you play.

The feels I had at the end of FFX and TLOU. :smh:

My only qualm about that is everyone is going to have it so it'll just be like starter weapons. Personally I would have made it random for each individual person. A good chance at a few different rare but not ridiculous overpowered weapons.
