The Old PlayStation Thread | *NEW THREAD IS UP*

Regarding Project Morpheus - does anyone know if you can just use it as a personal tv screen? I.e. I'm playing a static game of Mortal Kombat X on Morpheus while my girl is watching Real Housewives next to me on the livingroom TV.
That would be cool, I know Sony made some of those personal cinemas a while ago, saw it in the SkyMall (RIP).

Rock Band 4 has been officially announced by series developer Harmonix. It's coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later in 2015.

It will support old peripherals, though Mad Catz is creating new ones as well.

Better yet, it will allow players to import all their content from previous games on PS3 and Xbox 360 into this long-awaited series resurgence. The previous Rock Band game, Rock Band 3, launched five years ago in 2010.

We caught up with the game's project manager Daniel Sussman at GDC for further details on why Harmonix thinks now is the time to rejuvenate Rock Band and what's changing in this latest iteration.

"After taking some time off, it was really interesting to kind of come back and play the games that we bled and sweat over for years and years and years. Two things emerged very quickly: One was 'holy motherf***, these games are FUN!' Sussman exclaimed.

"At the same time we were able to be quite critical of the work that we had done and saw lots of room for improvement. And that was really important to us as well because we are all creative people and it was important for us to be able to sink our teeth into to something that was deserving of the 4 at the end of the title. We didn't just want to rehash Rock Band 3 for new consoles. We felt it was really important for us to evolve the gameplay in a way that would be interesting

And here's a handy FAQ for you!

Q: When is RB4 coming out?!
A: Rock Band will be out this year. Stay tuned for more specifics in the coming months.

Q: What consoles is RB4 coming out for?
A: Rock Band 4 will be released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Q: Why not Wii / Wii U / PC?
A: Due to shifting production priorities and capabilities of the studio, we don’t currently have plans to release RB4 on the Wii / Wii U / PC simultaneously with Xbox One and PS4. While we genuinely appreciate the support of Wii Rock band users over the years, and the increased interest from PC gamers, the truth is that we had to prioritize opportunities on other platforms with historically larger RB audiences.

Q: Will my old DLC work on the next gen console of the same type, i.e. PS3 -> PS4?
A: Yes! Content purchased from the store or exported from a disc will transfer over to the new generation of consoles at not addition cost as we make that content available.

Q: Will my old DLC work if I bought a different next gen console, i.e. Xbox 360 -> PS4?
A: Cross platform DLC compatibility is not entirely within our control, as DLC ownership is managed by the 1st parties.

Q: Will my old hardware work?
A: We’re already working closely with Mad Catz, Sony, and Microsoft on solutions for letting you use legacy hardware on new consoles. This is a challenge on both the software side and hardware side, but something we’d love to happen. We’ll have more information on this in the coming months.

Q: Will you be making new hardware?
A: Yes we will! You can preorder a new PAX East exclusive guitar if you come by the Harmonix booth! We’re working with Mad Catz, who has a lot of history with RB gear, and we’re excited to get more instruments back into the world.

Q: Will there be any new instruments, i.e. a tuba, accordion, mouth harp, etc?
A: We’re concentrating on the core band that people are most familiar with (guitar, bass, drums, and mic) rather than expanding on the types of playable instruments in RB4.

Q: What will the new Rock Band cost?
A: Sorry, but we’re not talking about pricing at this time.

Q: What instruments will be playable? Wiill RB4 have Pro guitar and keys?
A: Rock Band 4 will focus on the core experience and the roots of the franchise – guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. There will be no Pro Guitar or key support in Rock Band 4. We will continue to support “Pro” mode for Drums.

Q: What are the new features?
A: We’re not quite ready to reveal the evolutionary features of Rock Band 4, but we’re excited to show you in the coming months how we’re expanding the core gameplay you love.

Q: Will you be bringing back [Random Feature X]?
A: We’re not quite ready to reveal the feature set of Rock Band 4 yet, but keep posted for more info!

Q: Will you have songs by [Random Band X]?
A: We’re not talking about the disc soundtrack just yet, but you can bet it’ll be awesome. Over 2000 songs spanning over 500 artists already exist in Rock Band catalog and we’re committed to expanding that and supporting the game post-launch with DLC, and we’re always looking for new bands and sounds, so keep the suggestions coming! Let us know what you want at RockBand.com/request

Q: When will you have more news about RB4?
A: Soon! Keep posted to our social channels and the Harmonix forums for updates.

Q: When can I preorder RB4?
A: You can sign up for preorder notifications right now at RockBand.com/preorder!

I'm not sure but I doubt you will be able to.
It's a 5.7 inch screen but there are lenses which focuses the eye on each half of the screen so each eye is seeing 960x1080p image. Most games are 1920x1080p so I don't think it would work but not fully certain.

That would be cool, I know Sony made some of those personal cinemas a while ago, saw it in the SkyMall (RIP).

Expensive but i think its cheaper now and designed for what you're after but no VR. Apparently it's like being at a cinema.

shovel knight is a no brainier^ I have it on DS and it's one of my favorite games of last year.

So I'm about to say something I haven't said in quite some time. I'm thinking of getting a VITA. Can someone convince me to go for it?

I have a ps3, wii u, and 3ds right now. I'm definitely not getting a ps4 for a few more years because I have a pretty big backlog and I simply don't see much that I'm freaking out over. Plus I want the library to build up so I can get games cheaper and really attempt to only choose the cream of the eventual crop.

I come home from work and I pretty much only want to play on the gamepad or 3ds while I ha ve the news or sports or whatever in the background. So I figure maybe this is a good idea.

Okay so all I have heard is that the VITA has no support. How true is that? I'm mostly looking to play indie games that aren't available on nintendo and trying to get into JRPG's because I feel like I have more patience these days and those games seem perfect to play while the TV is on the background.

Main games I'm thinking about is Persona 4 Golden and Hotline Miami. (I've never played a persona game)

should I do it?! what are the top games?

Anybody? No vita owners here?

iYen, youre a smart dude legitimately. i dont see how you can use this argument with a straight face. youre saying a hypothetical where only 1 side gets to change what they did, and then giving a solid outcome of the change. You're better than that. How can u say if ms stuck to their "message" then the lead would change or would be different? People aren't buying consoles for a message. MS messed up in SOOOOO many places you can't pinpoint the turning point for them. Even I was MS last gen but switched over now.

And MS saying exclusives will be out during the holiday is stupid. We just had a holiday. Nothing happened. Sunset was a flop. Came and went with no one the wiser. Same thing for Halo which is what all the MS fanboys went to war with (before it dropped) Halo was the ace up the sleeve! And it failed MISERABLY. It was embarrassing how bad their #1 exclusive. Pitiful even.

And finally, you and many others here keep talking about how both consoles exclusives either suck or are good but nothing GREAT yet. I agree. I liked Second son A LOT, but i wouldn't say it was a goty candidate. But then you say, Forza is the only must have exclusive? We need to reevaluate what must have means. Because if i had an xbox i still wouldn't be checking for forza. Racing games are niche. Please dont refer to a racing game as a must-have. If you don't like racing games, this will NOT draw you in.

Ex. I dont like mmos/rpgs. But games like fallout nd FF and borderlands dragged me in. I dont like 3rd person shooters but Gears dragged me in. they were must haves. forza? a must have IF u like racing sims.

this is not good business sense. you wanted them to launch the console AND the peripheral for $400? makes ZERO business sense. ps4 nailed it by launching at 400 period. Which is why xbox had to fall in line to the same price. But you saying a new game console by itself should be $300 makes me question if you use logic before typing. They'd be taking a huge loss on every single console. HUGE.

Good points except on PS4 taking a huge loss per console. Sony was actually excited with the PS4 pricing point because they were losing only like ~$10-$25 per console on launch day. They should be in the positive now with component pricing drops. They were losing, but it was better than the $100-$200 they were losing per PS3 initially when that released. But then again I guess it was worth it to them, since it made Blu-Ray win that HD format war.

I wrote a marketing paper in the fall of 2013 for my grad class and it was on the video games industry so I remember the research I did for this somewhat.

Vita's support is not great but it's prefect for what you're after. Japanese games and Indie games. It's doing well in Japan so it's getting support there and it's indie support is fantastic, especially with PS+ and cross play.

I really enjoy my VIta, even if I don't play it that much. It has a really good library of games...Dragon's Crown is good, Persona 4 Golden like you said, Uncharted Golden Abyss is better than the original uncharted, tearaway...not to mention the number of cross-buy, cross-save games for ps4/vita that automatically upload your saves so you can pick up where you left off on either system (Fez-another good game, Rogue legacy, Helldivers- i also believe is cross-save)

But yes, the memory prices are terrible.

you read it wrong. i never said ps4 was taking a huge loss (altho they were taking a loss) i said XBOX wouldve been taking a huge loss if they sold it for 300 like other dude was saying. i said ps4 nailed it. they were taking a small loss on consoles, but negligible that they already ARE back positive. they nailed the price point. xbox on the other hand has a different price/bundle every month.

coincidence. i did one of my final marketing group projects on xbox vs ps leading up to both of their releases in the end of 2013.

 great minds man, great minds.

Got Helldivers for $9 gameshare with my brother.  I knew it was cross-buy, but i didn't know it was cross-play.  So my brother in law, who I gave my PS3 to, can join in.

P.S. Going to the Philippines in 2 months, I'm excited to see what wacky wonky Japanese PS4 games I can get my hands on for cheap.

Are people actually hyped for Rockband?

I don't understand the appeal for Rockband anymore and I hope this new one flops in the iYEN sense and the general definition. I saw the appeal years ago as a fun party game for "non-gamers" to mess around with. But if you're into instrument games why not just get Rocksmith 2014 for PC (which is fantastic) and learn to play actual guitar and/or bass?

There's literally 12,000 songs available for Rocksmith and 99% of them you don't have to pay money for. ::Kayne Shrug::

I said blockbuster exclusives. $ony's recent blockbuster exclusive was a flop. m$ has exclusives to be released to be released soon such as Ori and in the summer.
I'm not focusing on them, because I care more about the blockbuster exclusives. The games that made most ppl enter nextgen for.
$ony let m$ dominate holiday 2014 exclusive wise, let's not forget.

It's not just blockbuster exclusives that make most people enter next gen. It's blockbuster games.

Destiny
COD
FIFA
2K
Madden
GTA
AC
BF

These are games that many people buy when they pick up their new console.

Sunset Overdrive isn't a blockbuster. Neither is Forza Horizon 2. MCC, sure.

Game looks fun as hell but ill wait for ps+ or at least when it drops in price.

London Heist:

Jose: But rest assured since we are currently working to have the servers up and running again. We apologize for the inconvenience and we appreciate your patience. We kindly advice you to try again later on today. Thank you for understanding
You: that fact doesn't clear playstation of any liability
You: im still not satisfied.
You: is this supposed to entice me to pay a subscription fee?
You: so i can not play any of my games anytime there is a service outage?
You: and since its the servers, tough luck, it's nobody's responsibility?
You: my girlfriend, who bought the system, wants to return it to the store!
Jose: K, she can try returning the system to the store.
Lots of hardcore gamers who were on 360 switched to ps4, given m$'s e3. All I'm saying is that had m$ not had a mixed message, that would have helped them not be in the situation they're in now. That $400 price at e3 2013 was $ony's shoryuken, had m$ revealed their console was $350, that shoryuken would have been countered. Hardcore gamers were the ones who bought consoles day one, m$ wasn't catering to that audience at that time. Lots of people are buying consoles because of messages. $ony probably spends millions on ads. Look at $ony's ad campaign, 4theplayers. Advertising makes a HUGE difference. It's a way of restating their message over and over. m$'s message was so mixed that I can't even recall it right now. But $ony's excellent 4theplayers ad campaign is engrained in my head, since I've had PS since PS1.

I stated Phil Spencer stated that blockbuster exclusives would be out by holiday because he feels that holiday is the most important time to compete. There will be other exclusives to come before then, but I wasn't refering to those. Sunset reviewed well. I don't know it's sales because I don't care. I've also played the game and it's as good as infamous second son. @Antidope can chime in on Halo. I'm a mild halo fan. I've mainly been playing the campaigns and playing halo 4 MP.
Just because it's in a niche genre, doesn't revoke it's ability to be recommended to everyone. I bought Forza Horizon 1 on a whim and it pulled me back into the racing genre. I think we all have that one genre where we're like "I wasn't really into X genre, until I played X game."

For me recently, I wasn't into rpgs until I played FF13, now FF15 is on my radar.

Given that, extraordinary games like FH2 could be games that make people reconsider how they feel about a genre. Whether it be racing or point/click games like TWD. I thought TWD demo was boring as hell, until my friend lent me copy and told me to only give it back until I played the whole game. FH2 is more than just a "racing" game. Sure racing is necessary. If said person isn't into racing, there's a variety of other things to do. Such as playground events, exploring the map, or online freeroam.
Ex. I dont like mmos/rpgs. But games like fallout nd FF and borderlands dragged me in. I dont like 3rd person shooters but Gears dragged me in. they were must haves. forza? a must have IF u like racing sims.
I see what you're saying and FH1 pulled me back into the racing genre.

Forza Horizon 2 is an arcade racer. Forza 5 is a racing sim.
Rock Band 4 has been officially announced by series developer Harmonix. It's coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later in 2015.
I'm HIGHLY disappointed that they're still rocking with those bad peripheral designs. Looks like I'll cop the GH bundle, then cop the RB4 disc.

HIGHLY stoked to hear that it'll support older peripherals and my DLC.

Given how much space is on bluray discs, there better be at LEAST 200 songs on there!
Are people actually hyped for Rockband?

Hell yeah! Rock Band/Guitar Hero literally got me into rock music. If I wasn't for GH, I'd still be listening to rap only. It got me into drumming and it links generations. I was at a restaurant and this 50+ year old white guy by the table next to us is like "most people who know this song are dead." He starts singing it, then I yelled "that's such and such." "How do you know that song?" "Guitar hero bro."

Not to mention how fun it is to play songs you like or learn about new artists.

Some people don't care about learning an instrument. I like dj hero, but I don't care about learning how to actually dj.

It's just a fun pickup/play game, it doesn't have to be anything more than that.

I see GH/RB as avenues of bringing people into rock culture.

Also not to mention how much it means for a band to have their track in the game, etc, etc.

That's how I'd define the appeal.
i loved Guitar Hero..

I didn't say that. Read more carefully. I already know that hence why I'm always recommending people games like diablo 3, shadow of mordor, far cry 4, etc.

Have you played SO or FH2? If not, you're talking nonsense.

FH2 set the new standard for open world racing games.

I don't have to play FH2 and SO to know they aren't blockbusters.

By all accounts they seem to be fine, well-made games. I'm not denying that they aren't.

Lots of games are fine, well-made games, but not blockbusters.

We had Guitar Hero, we played it for like two months & just gave up on it. Probably buy Rockband, got a huge family Including two 6 YO nieces who would probably enjoy it. Wouldn't use it often, just whenever they want to play.

@iyen he tried to tell an inside joke to a randomly generated operator....and didn't even get the "joke" off....and still posted it...to crickets....when requesting customer service like everyone else who contacts the chat line....

lmao @ twitter beef

more like twitter laughing at yall.

keep mentioning me, tho.

Platinumed Far Cry 4.

Definitely not as good as FC3 and I could have done without all the drugged out missions, but definitely a great game.
