They go on about how they need men but killing a Night's Watch deserter is the first thing that happened in this show. So yes they would've.

They didn't behead the deserter.. Ned did

Not to mention that he was supposed to be an errand boy. They wouldve had no problem offing him.

Don't forget he was put in that position so he could be groomed for leadership

And how did Ned know who to kill? IIRC it's because they pointed him out. No one said "Don't behead him, we need him"

Sam kept saying that but to me it looked like it was done as punishment. Was anyone able to confirm that besides sam?

I think its just that nobody besides a guy like Ned cares if you desert the nights watch. Robert or stannis wouldn't give a ****.

Jon aint cut out to be a King. Dude is legit slow. He really isn't a leader but he is a good soldier for sure

His personality is terrible and his body language is always so down. What else to expect from a bastard

I agree that he ain't cut to be king, but he'd make a perfect King's Hand.

I still think she becomes queen of the 7 kingdoms though

stannis would

If I remember correctly, it's because he wore the black.. But it was Ned's people who caught the guy
It's only really been alliser Thorne who has been a jacka%+%*% to him

Odd because they send people, like Benjen Stark and Yoren to look for recruits. Do the lords just know who to look out for? If it was just a matter of offing people wearing black then they wouldve killed them too. Obviously Ned Stark wouldnt kill Benjen or Yoren. Benjen would be well known but how would they know not to kill Yoren?

Lets clear some things up.

Every house/region. Knows the rules of taking the black. Most people in the nights watch (more in this period than ever) are scraped up from dungeons/jails.
Ned up holds every law and is an honarable man. So if a deserter comes on to his land he knows the rules that they must be executed for breaking vows. You take those vows knowing the consequences.
The fellow who got "caught" had actually ran to an inn or keep to warn people of what he saw. He was wearing nights watch clothes. And he was so shaken up you knew he wasnt trying to go back. So being a deserter you get killed.

Yoren states his intentions. Benjen was lead ranger which also includes supply runs and all that so when yoren was down getting recruits benjen just rilled out with him since ned is his beother and sort of a halfway point before the kings road. Benjen was there in winterfell to lead yoren and let him be with ned to eat and resupply. Since starks are friends to the watch

And you guys are acting like were saying that without GoT HBO will go bankrupt

HBO passing on Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead was also bad for them. Are we saying that HBO isn't going to survive? No.

Second of all those shows werent even close to GoT popularitywise. The Wire had 1 million views per ep. GoT has 15x that. So yes, it's different

tdogg2k tdogg2k said HBO will be SUNK w/o GOT...thats all my statement was in reply to.

You reaching saying what "we're saying". Bottom line, HBO will be fine after.

Lol at the wire comment. It was as big as any HBO show during its run. HBO has a great eye for this stuff, they'll be alright.

In terms of hbo Now as i explained yes .but GoT will end..
What other show is out people willing to buy a singular station app for?

AMC right now is probably the only other station that could pull that off. And breaking bad and Mad Men are done.

Again i say hbo will never stop being hbo.. but lets not pretend GOT isnt single handedly selling this App for HBO

No it wasnt.

The Wire PEAKED at much less than Sex's and Sopranos AVERAGE viewership. People werent even tuning in to see how the show would end.

The only successful shows it beat was Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. If you consider those a success. But comparing that to Game of Thrones

You're super odd the way you approach trivial **** like this but you're right about the numbers. Bottom line, hbo will be good.

You have completely ignored the tipping point as to why GOT has surpassed The Sopranos and past shows HBO had in their arsenal in popularity.

I wonder what the ratio is of people who actually have hbo and watch it on there compared to people who watch it other ways. Most people I know don't have hbo.

There are so many people leaching off one paid subscription it's ridiculous. That's why the numbers GOT produces can't be compared to the shows HBO had in the past.  HBO GO & recently HBO Now bring an entirely new dynamic.

And what shine and I are saying is not many people would even care about HBO NOW or GO. If not for Game of Thrones. Ive had GO has been out for awhile. Yet the numbers to run and grab HBO were still not huge. And this was with true blood and boardwalk currently playing at the time. GoT. Blew that up for HBO and I say again. Single handedly selling HBO NOW subscriptions.

Weve discovered HBO going to eat without GOT when the time comes. But this is currently bringing in the $$$ for them unlike ANY. Other shows they have can.
People would just keep DLing it (like most still will) but a lot will go this legit way now. And make hbo $$$
I seriously doubt no one is getting it to re watch sopranos wire or sex and the city.
And hard to say that many people would even do it if those shows were current.

Heck look at dvd sales........

It has nothing to do with the discussion

The discussion was is comparing The Wire to all these other shows a fair comparison? No. The Wire's viewership wasnt touching any other show around its time except for Curb and Entourage.

Viewership for GOT can't be compared to viewership of past shows because there are different variables now. I'm not disputing the popularity nor the cash cow that GOT is for HBO. The power of social media plus the addition of HBO Go and more recent HBO NOW are the only reasons GOT has surpassed The Sopranos. As for the Wire and other shows from HBO's past line-ups, there was always more of a core viewership. GOT has mass appeal like The Sopranos did. You have to realize that GOT wasn't a smash hit from the jump, it took social media to spread the word and with the many accessible ways to watch HBO, the numbers poured in. I think you're wrong in believing HBO is in trouble once GOT finishes. There is always a new show waiting to be the next hit show for the premier cable network on the planet.

^Complete ********. Viewership is viewership. You can point out that these days social media helps but at you cannot say they can't be compared. That's how technology works. That's like saying you can't compare two cars because one has launch control. Launch control makes it easier to win a race but they are still comparable.

With that said, you are right. It is much easier to get a mega hit these days. But social media is not elevating the status of all these other shows to Sopranos level.
