Jesus, ya'll argue just to argue. Who gives a crap how well HBO is doing now, compared to how it was doing with older shows. Can we talk about the actual show again? Anyways, I was watching season 1 again today and I took it for granted how cool of an exchange Jon Snow and Tyrion had. The screen time they shared was one of the coolest scenes from the show. Wish they could meet up again, that would be cool.

^Complete ********. Viewership is viewership. You can point out that these days social media helps but at you cannot say they can't be compared. That's how technology works. That's like saying you can't compare two cars because one has launch control. Launch control makes it easier to win a race but they are still comparable.

With that said, you are right. It is much easier to get a mega hit these days. But social media is not elevating the status of all these other shows to Sopranos level.
The only thing that is complete ******** is your reading and comprehension skills. I never stated that Social media and the various "new" ways of watching a show like GOT made it a better show. Since my post seemed to completely go over your head I'll break it down for you.

Sopranos aired during the infancy of social media. The number of HBO subscribers pale in comparison to the subscribers in 2015. There was no such thing as streaming services, which HBO counts toward their views. The entire landscape has transformed and evolved in the last 5 years. Viewership does not equal viewership if the playing field looks nothing like it did before. If you wanted your views to be counted towards watching The Sopranos, you needed to be a paid subscriber and if your television was tuned in during the episode airing, it was counted. In 2015 there are multiple ways HBO tallies it's viewership. Streams alone are deceiving because you don't have to be a subscriber to have access to HBO Go. I believe each HBO subscriber can link up to 5 devices to HBO GO. Imagine if the Sopranos had that type of accessibility back when it aired.

Like mentioned earlier, HBO will be fine going forward as long as they continue to make the shows we want to watch.

Viewership for GOT can't be compared to viewership of past shows because there are different variables now. I'm not disputing the popularity nor the cash cow that GOT is for HBO. The power of social media plus the addition of HBO Go and more recent HBO NOW are the only reasons GOT has surpassed The Sopranos.t.

I see what you saying but

So that's a pretty major advantage for "Game of Thrones," right?

Well, it's not like "The Sopranos" is without advantages. Before 2004, in its not-exactly-infinite-wisdom, Nielsen measured all of the channels within HBO's universe as a single entity. So if "The Sopranos" aired on a Sunday night, you'd get ratings, but they'd also include HBO2, HBO3, HBOCZECH, anything with an HBO in it. So if 7 million people were watching "The Sopranos" and 200,000 people were watching an airing of "House 2: The Second Story," Nielsen spit out 7.2 million viewers for HBO's ratings and that's what we reported "The Sopranos" did. There were no alternatives.

As a result, that 18.2 million number for "The Sopranos"? It's really inexact and probably the actual gross viewership was lower, though we don't have a clue exactly how much lower. HBO waited to make its grand proclamation of "Game of Thrones" supremacy until after "GoT" passed the artificial 18.2 million threshold, but there's a good chance that "GoT" has been out-grossing "The Sopranos" for a while now, or at least for much of this season, since "Game of Thrones" had an average gross audience of 14.4 million viewers for last season.

plus let's not forget GOT is the most pirated show in TV history....
and HBO isn't even counting those viewers..

so you're right theres more variables to watch the show. but at the same time the same would be true for Sopranos now which would make those numbers go up for Sopranos but it's not.
and whose to even say that if Sopranos was on now it would have that viewership GOT has....we dont know but what we do know is GOT is absolutely killing it for HBO
and without it i doubt HBO now would even be purchased.

as Sunshine and I have been saying, GOT is carrying. HBO now. and this app. without GOT this app would get no type of money.

HBO will always have shows that people will love. but it will be a LONG time before there is anything of this level again....
Walking dead is probably the only show that can compete with GOT as far as ratings and money earned. and HBO don't have that.

Wire, sopranos, true blood, sex and the city. are not touching GOT on any level.

People don't just watch it to watch it. they watch it because it's a great story. every show has this opportunity but GOT is killing it because of how good it is. nothing more nothing less....

Probably one of the biggest realizations I had rewatching the Seasons 1 and 2 over the years, that boy Tyrion had some absolute gems in early on.

Just kind of goes to show the genius of Peter Dinklage and the writers behind it all. Compared to other characters it seems in the show at least he wasn't so much a key focal point until Season 3 onwards.

The Sopranos & The Wire are critical acclaimed shows. You seriously just lost any credibility you had with that BS claim.

I need to go back and watch when Tyrion smacked Joffery up. In retrospect, it's become even more awesome.

def as old if not older than you two.

Twisting my words to make it seem like I said Wire and Sopranos was never good or Critically acclaimed.
NEVER SAID THAT

GOT is bigger, plain and simple. numbers don't lie....Sales don't lie. the Fandom don't lie...

I dont know what other words you want to twist of mine... but my statement of GOT is bigger is clear. HBO is eating good because of it....

LOL y'all are all about twisting words up in here.....

none of my post are edited and none of them are saying other HBO shows aren't great shows. There was obviously a huge popularity with all those shows.......
just not on this GOT level.

GOT is one of a kind (with TELEVISION*****) with the way the story is built, the characters, the time period.
has there been other "medieval" shows. yes.
has there been other "fantasy" shows.. yes.
have any of them had this type of impact......NO

Maybe if Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter were Television series im sure it would be as big.

Y'all seem to forget that GOT books already had a pretty big following before the show came out. the first 4 books were already in the thousands.. (for a fantasy series not covered in schools (like the hobbit was) that's pretty big).

A dance with Dragons sold in the 50,000s alone after season 1 ended.

so word of mouth def helped GOT get to the fandom it is is now. I still accredit that to the story in general.

My original point is this... HBO NOW is selling because of GOT.

all those other shows are not the reason.... which in turn means HBO is eating REAL good now because of GOT, before it was just eating good.

YES! You're exactly right. Every line from him in those first 2 seasons is a memorable quote that sums up the entire thesis of the show/series as well as lessons that hold true in real life.

No one's twisting your words man.

You said Sopranos and The Wire aren't touching GOT on ANY level. Obvious implications their far beyond viewership.

Literally your next sentence was, "people watch GOT for the story," (*insert Rustle Westbrook .gif* as if people didn't watch Sopranos and the Wire for the story)

I'm really not sure what you're arguing. I've said repeatedly in this thread, GOT is my single favorite piece of television of all time, a title formerly held by The Wire.  No one is saying it's not a great, or an all time great, or the greatest.

Nobody is saying GOT isn't as big as it is. What people keep saying is that a HUGE part of the measuring stick when it comes to gross viewership didn't even exist when Sopranos was running. So no aggregate - viewership is not directly comparable, despite what @sunshineblotters  thinks.   I'm not sure the statement GOT is more impactful than The Sopranos is accurate either.

Your original point that HBO NOW is selling is because of GOT is a key part of the point above.

But the original, original point that sparked all of this off is, HBO will be good. They're not stressing about the day GOT ends in that sense, they're doing their jobs, looking for the next hit, no different then what they were doing ten years ago.

My favorite current show is still Banshee. GOT still stays around in my top 3, top 4.

as far as shows. GOT currently is my favorite, not my favorite of all time.
as far as books it's def my #1 book of all time a few different series in.

Twisting your words? **** are you talking about? I quoted exactly what you said. You claimed that Sopranos & The Wire are not touching GOT on any level. That claim alone is one of the dumbest ******* things I've read in this thread.

You quoted me as if i was saying those two weren't popular which was never the case.

Again numbers dont lie you can think its as dumb as you want but show me numbers of those two shows beating GOT. You cant....
You were provided with several links of GOT being the ratings leader for HBO. Which is not even including the pirates.
On top of hbo finally using the numbers for just the show. Not the whole time block of all hbo channels as it use to.

We are technically discussing GOT. Can only break down episodes but so much. Next is rating the women

You quoted me as if i was saying those two weren't popular which was never the case.
I quoted exactly what you said, which was some stupid *** claim. I never said that you didn't think The Sopranos or The Wire was popular. You are a back peddling double talking type dude. I can just imagine how you are irl when you get called out. Probably on some stuttering John type steeze.

There's no need to continue this back and forth, it's a complete waste of time speaking with you on this subject.

So again youre going to pick out what you want in order to make yourself sound like an internet smart*****. But ignore the facts?

Thats cool name call and pick out all you want.
Just come with some fact/data on the actual subject next time instead of dancing around it to sound cool with the heckling. Glad you made yourself laugh with your "insult" though. Highlight of the day for you? (Inb4 i have better things to do and not thinking about you.)

The FACTS are; The Sopranos viewership can't be compared to the viewership of GOT, two different times and too many variables that separate the two. The FACTS are nobody can see into the future and though you think GOT is the say all be all show that HBO has ever had, the next best thing could  be on the horizon. Honestly I loathe people like you because you are a prisoner of the moment. You are correct that GOT is doing big numbers and has been a huge success, but when you start making idiotic claims, your words fall upon deaf ears.
