GoT is HBO's biggest hit but it also has the most ways to reach a market as well an already built in fan base with prior book readers and the benefit of the internet.
I'm in the belief that if the wire would have started and not ended in 08 it would have had greater popularity due to social media, I mean look at the buzz the marathon they had around Christmas built.
Like all other networks the channel will have his and misses but it is the standard for tv shows. If they put their name on it people will give it a look, I mean look how people fantasize about how walking dead or breaking bad would have been on HBO.

The FACTS are; The Sopranos viewership can't be compared to the viewership of GOT, two different times and too many variables that separate . You are correct that GOT is doing big numbers and has been a huge success, but when you start making idiotic claims, your words fall upon deaf ears.
There you go again. The numbers were compared though thats fact (and the way they are counted now compared to how they use to be proves GOT is the superior ratings monster for hbo).... ok they were a different time, but theyre also a different genre. Fantasy / extremly fictional (before you twist my words around again im talking about the fiction of monsters, magic, and ghouls)
Have proven to have more viewership than the gangster/cop/hospital type shows. (Ex: Walking dead, Arrow, flash, once upon a time) these are huge hits because the whole family can watch.(not saying GOT is a "family" show particularly ) It also proves in movies as well.
Try to deny the harry potter movies. MARVEL, DC , hunger games star wars movies have ever been beat in ticketsales and money made to a non fantasy genre movie.
Its not about being in the moment. Once again im as old if not older than you.
Im not claiming GOT is a "family" show(once again ), it has sex murder and mayhem....
Same as Sopranos. But as a parent/guardian im more inclined to let my child watch a fantasy show like this over something like the wire or sopranos .(which ratings and fandom has proved)books and merchandise sales). Again Walking dead. Is that not the most highest rated television show on tv. Season 4 cleared close to 20 million viewers.
I realize sopranos and the wire were debuted before the huge social media boom.
But yall are acting like the economy suddenly got that much better and everyone can or has HBO in their living rooms. The same way yall argue "IF" sopranos or wire was on now it would have more viewers because of social media. Those 2 shows have had years of being out. They still calculate the numbers of people buying dvds going back on hbo go/now/demand and GOt as stated in here has still surpassed it.

I really dont see the argument youre trying to make anymore?

How about this 2 options. Either block me on this board (which idk why you would do that if you cant handle a little debate...plus I contribute a good deal to this board)

Or PM me.
Im fine with both but no need to keep trying to belittle me on here to get a smile for the day. If you can't debate without degrading someone personally than why debate at all.?

My intention was not to belittle you, so if you interpreted as such, that's my bad. I also wasn't disputing that GOT has become HBO's biggest cash grab. What I was challenging was your claim that The Sopranos or The Wire weren't seeing GOT on any level. Both of the shows are superior in content than GOT. I also was trying to make the point that GOT has a better platform in 2015 than the Sopranos did in 2000. You have finally acknowledged this though (social media) and I hope you realize that you can't compare two shows when the playing field differed.

I agree that GOT exist in a genre that tends to have a lot bigger following. Like you mentioned there was a built in fan base already due to the novels, which if you really think about it is another variable for it's viewership. I love GOT like you do Tdogg2k and I do appreciate your contribution in this thread. I just couldn't get down with that statement you made.

Jesus, ya'll argue just to argue. Who gives a crap how well HBO is doing now, compared to how it was doing with older shows. Can we talk about the actual show again? Anyways, I was watching season 1 again today and I took it for granted how cool of an exchange Jon Snow and Tyrion had. The screen time they shared was one of the coolest scenes from the show. Wish they could meet up again, that would be cool.

Yea who cares how HBO will do after this

I'm just scrolling on up on those arguments

Well it depends on your preference and what you like too. I lost interest in the sopranos and the story. Didn't keep up with the last 2-3 seasons. Comparing the content of a fantasy show, one about the mob, and one about drugs in Baltimore is tough. As far as hbo shows go, I enjoyed Rome and Deadwood more than the sopranos.

What aspects of content are you referring to? The overall story, quality of writing, subject matter, social significance, setting, characters? I like the epicness of the story and the large scale of it. If I could put the McNulty character in every show I would.

Let's not even discuss the leaked episodes in spoilers... besides the temptation to click, we also can't discuss pirated material.. which is the only way we can see those episodes right now.

Quality of writing, subject matter, social significance and the overall acting. I am not saying GOT isn't a great show, but when it comes to what I listed, The Wire and The Sopranos fit that bill to a tee.

Still bugs the crap outta me that they never show what happened to this dude. I don't get it. They don't cut away from any deaths in the show ever but they can't show what happened to this guy? why?

I think its because the TV writers/GRRM want it to be unclear. Seemed like he was in pretty deep **** when we last saw him, but I would not be shocked if he reappeared.

Yeah it doesn't make sense why they wouldn't show it unless they want to bring him back. he gave those other 5 dudes the business with his wooden sword, then they cut away when he is up against the last guy. Only reason why I could see them not bringing him back is that they haven't even slightly hinted at him since that episode, which was like the 5th episode of the 1st season.

I think Arya talked about him in one episode last season when she was with the Hound. When she explained "water dancing." But other than that, yeah, he's been pretty well forgotten.
