What was your starting salary after college?

Sad thing is. 80k is considered a "C" average in the Bay Area. At least where I live. 125k or bust.

I can't stand cover letters. I never look at them when looking at applications. Civil Engineer so might be different for other majors/jobs

What do you do? Graduated in May with BS in civil and I'm working at a roadway design firm in the drainage/hydro dept

I'm a state regulator for waste water treatment plants and sewer collection systems. Mainly make sure my facilities are in compliance with their NPDES permits for operations, treatment, and reporting requirements.

My wife is a PT and works at a SNF. She makes bank. She says down the road she would like to get into a hospital if she could.

Just got a job.

Average salary for a new grad for Physical Therapy is like $74k. The company I'm working for counter offered me $95k, I start as I get my license next month. :pimp:

$116,000 in student loans.

Resigned from a really good job, to go work with my pops and learn the business and took a decrease in pay in the process. I get there and learn how he has so many incompetent employees. It takes them ages to complete simple tasks. Now I am bout to take another pay hit to work with the Army and I have to move to small town Pennsylvania.

Im excited and nervous.

Once I leave I'm not talking to the fam for a very long time.

What made you decided to go through with all those changes?

I recently graduated with a BA in Political Science, I want to go into politics but not for the money more so for my place holder in history. I have a job as a restaurant manager at 47k a year with upwards of 5k in bonus every years and merit based increase every quarter. I'm happy.

I knew I wanted to go government so I started applying and gave my my pops a chance to show me what he had in the interim. He doesnt have anything so im sticking to my original plan.

Hell yeah, I'm beyond heated. I love them but, I much happier when I'm doing my own thing.

PTs at a SNF can make really good money and be set for their career. Problem is that once your in, your in. Hard to switch settings because you lose a lot of those skills.

Thanks man. Opportunity awaits.

Fresh out of college I landed a job as the Compliance Manager for a wine importing company in San Francisco. Made 32k a year. Stayed for about a year and a half before I just upped and moved to NYC one day.

Now I'm just hustling. Working as a barback, curating a lighting gallery, and apprenticing at a fabrication house (art installations/ burning man, coachella, ultra) out here. I majored in Business with a specialization in marketing but quickly realized I wanted to make cool $*^+ with interesting people. No salary or 401k at the moment but I could not be happier.

. i just started PT school this fall and can't wait to finish. are you working in manhattan? its rare to see an outpatient clinic offer that high of a salary unless you have a lot of experience

love these type of threads. I feel they are inspiring, motivating, and give a good insight on whats possible and where you can
be at professionally. I remember reading this when I was in school and it pushed me big time. For me it was:

25 years old
M.S. Technology - Training & Development (HR Based)
B.A. Communication Studies - Communication Theory Practice

Starting Salary: $50k - Human Resources Manager

Student loan debt: a little over $40k

Advice for people still in school:
-network your *** off, stay in touch with ppl in your field

-find out what company you want to work for and get in touch with them early

-stay away from refund checks lol (if u can, I know they help but they do come back atcha)

-stay with ya ppl after school lol (no rent is better than struggling)

-if youre going for your Masters, go straight after undergrad, dont wait

-you shouldnt pay for your Masters, too much free money out there

-grind, Pray, and never give up

I'm in FL currently, trying to get back ASAP, though. I had an offer from Professional PT to be at a Manhattan location, but they were only offering like 80k (on top of it, I didnt like their business model).

Being married and with one income and my wife going to be in Law School wouldnt cut it up there. Positive thing about it is that now I was my current rate or any pay increase as an advantage in salary negotiations when I get back up there.

that makes sense. did professional PT offer you any benefits on top of your salary?

I was lucky in the sense that I left college w/ zero debt, however, the flip side to that was I had to go to a California State University. Not exactly Berkeley or Stanford.

That being said, as I've grown in my profession I cannot believe how debt ridden these new graduates are. It basically shackles them to a job because they need the income in order to pay that down. Then factor in living in a high cost state (California, New York) and in order to be comfortable you either live at home longer than you'd like or have roommates for a long time. Crazy.

I've probably said it in here before, but honestly, it's not where you start in salary but where you see your progression. Don't settle for a higher salary out of college if it's not something that interests you in the long term or has a cap a few years down the road. Don't be short sighted in the process, especially if you guys have debt.

I started out of college in 2006 w/ $44k working in SF, lived with my parents for about two years...8 years late, same industry and I've tripled in salary.

i took the first thing i was offered because i came out of undergrad with A LOT owed...luckily I've paid down a lot of it (over 3/4ths), but my salary is very meh and the job i do is excruciatingly dull...

I need to start looking into fraternity contacts, which I've never done before

I mean I wouldn't totally grade it as a C. Maybe in SF but not the whole general Bay Area. If someone made 80k and lived in the East Bay or even more inland, it'd be cool to live on. Even if you lived in SF and got rent before the chaos here, 80k is good to live on and to even save money. 125K is about low margin of rich in SF. Like you won't be able to get a house with that income but maybe a solid condo. What you need is your girl/guy to make the same and then you can make it out here in SF.
